Absolutely a powerful movie with a deep story. Irrespective of whatever Henchard did, one has a soft corner for him. Very Very Powerful acting.

Henchard's last written words cut right to the bone; Thomas Hardy every bit equal to Shakespeare. Ciarin Hinds a masterful performance. Did anyone notice that the blame he put was on the alcohol, but it wasn't really the alcohol that made him take the five pounds over his wife, it was his inner demons that plagued him through right to the end--even though sober; the alcohol was just a failed attempt to drown the demons.

There's a lot of dramatic irony watching this as Henchard's pitfalls are so glaringly apparent to everyone but himself. His impulsivity and this permanent unfulfillment are uncannily relatable as someone with Borderline Personality Disorder. One thing that struck me on my latest viewing is that last encounter with Henchard and Elizabeth-Jane, and it seemed abundantly clear to me that there was an opportunity for him to explain his behaviour. However, Henchard was so deep in his shame, depression, and self-loathing that he missed the opportunity to redeem himself for the last of his sins to be unveiled. Redemption was always there but he was was so stuck in his ways - and most probably mental ill-health - that he wouldn't really accept it

No tenía opción, jeje. A la pobre Jodhi le dieron un personaje muy poco interesante, muy sosito. A un ángel de inocencia, de bondad y de nobleza ingenua no hay por dónde hincarle el diente.Muchas gracias por subir esta obra maestra.

Such Love! I've heard that some believe in, that because You're the Son of Elohim, You suffered less, during Your distress. But then, they completely forget, that You're the Son of man, yet; Which learned obedience through all Your sufferings, but always without any sins! Thank You, Lord, that during Your life down here, You stood against all kind of temptation, to prepare a way for my salvation! I'm so grateful for those precious Words in the garden of Gethsemane, in the middle of Your agony ; "Abba Father....not as I will, but as You will!" Nobody took Your life, Lord, but You gave it freely, went through all the pain, scorn and slaughter, because You love us dearly! How can I ever comprehend such Love, which eternal life did bestow?! All I can do, is believe and receive, forever praise Your Name ; which salvation for me became!

Wonderful movie, indeed. Sort of reminded me of Catherine Cookson's The Man Who Cried, maybe because of Ciaran Hinds in both roles or maybe because both are stories of a man who made wrong decisions but decisions made from the heart, the kind of man you can have pity for because he finally shows remorse. Cried at the end, so lonely he died. Thank you for posting.

Quite often come back to this when I'm in a bleak and self pitying mood. Henchard's end is the nightmare of a life's journey - turned towards loneliness and disgrace - and when I feel morally compromised I am drawn back here. Not sure whether it's to feel better that there's some profound literary precedent for ending up like that, or for comfort that this is unlikely to really be how things turn out for most of us

I love this story and the amazing cast who performed, especially the magnificent Ciaran Hinds. However, I find it disturbing that M. Beautiful, and deeply sad. Michael Henchard is a good man, who cannot avoid alienating everyone who cares about him. The theme in Hardy's works is always that you cannot escape fate, and you are doomed if you entertain illusions about yourself. Michael commits a great wrong, and tries to atone for it on his own terms, hoping that his actions will be sufficient to put everything right. You cannot do that in Hardy's world; you must pay fully. Would Michael's fate have been kinder if he had been completely honest about everything immediately upon reconnecting with his wife and daughter, instead of devising his poor, pitiable plan, which, of course, fails utterly?
