Aquesta cançó es basa en un poema escrit per Joan Maragall i es va interpretar per primera vegada el 1896. El seu objectiu és honrar la bandera d'Aragó i Catalunya, anomenada "La Senyera".
Era il·legal cantar aquesta cançó i tocar la melodia sota el règim franquista, es va convertir en un símbol del separatisme català després de la prohibició.
En el passat, el Cant de la Senyera va ser considerat per molts com l'himne català de la mateixa manera que "Els Segadors" abans que esdevingués l'himne oficial.

This song is based on a poem written by Joan Maragall and played for the first time in 1896. It's dedicated to honor the Aragonese and Catalan flag, called "The Senyera".
It became illegal to be played under the regime of Franco, and became a symbol of Catalan separatism following this ban.
El Cant de la Senyera was in the past considered by many the Catalan anthem at the same time of "Els Segadors" until this one became the official one.

This anthem is possibly the most beautiful and achieved one of all, national or otherwise. Unfortunately, this peculiar interpretation of it, destroys its beauty. Now just a few comments on the info provided. It is indeed a patriotic song, but never was one with any particular political connection beyond support to the, broadly speaking, Catalan cause. There was of course a nostalgy of sovereignty lost, but not a specific or at least open will to reclaim it entirely. In other words, many "Catalanists" were patriots without envisaging full independence. There were federalists and supporters of other political solutions for Catalonia, like a free associated state, or a confederation, or a devolution of past sovereignty under a common monarchy with other nations, as was the case between the 12th and 18th centuries, when Catalonia enjoyed its own parliamentary, constitutional monarchy, even before England did. The flag in question is, among very few left, one of the oldest worldwide. It is documented in Catalonia as the royal sign since the 12th century, used by the counts of Barcelona before they absorbed the neighbouring, fledgling kingdom of Aragon

(Sorry, I posted before finishing, so let's resume the explanation.) That was how the Catalan flag, which at the time was that of the fully sovereign counts of Barcelona, ruling over most of Catalonia and other lands, became as well an Aragonese flag. The counts of Barcelona had become kings of Aragon as well through marriage with an Aragonese heiress, before which there had never been any Aragonese kings other than a couple of brothers who had split from the kingdom of Pamplona (i.e. Navarre). This is how the actual Aragonese banner, which still exists but is seldom used or remembered, came to be effectively substituted by a royal emblem or banner that was Catalan. This flag also became that of all lands conquered by the house of Barcelona: kingdoms of Mallorca, Valencia, Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Naples, etc (even the duchies of Athens and Neopatria). It was a confederation of sorts, where each land enjoyed sovereignty under the same, Catalan monarchy and system of governance, which was very advanced, nearly republican, with checks and balances.

Yep, actually the flag has a pretty cool meening behind it. Guifré el pilós is largely considered to be "the father of catalonia", and during one of its battles against the moors, he was heavily injured and had to be brought back to Barcelona. When he was about to die, he placed his hand over his bleeding chest and then placed 4 of his fingers over his shield and traced 4 red lines over it as he painfuly died. There is no historical proof of this being the actual origin of the Senyera, but its still a cool story regardless.

@@SulphuriclyKryptical , yes, this story, with some variations, is very cool and popular, but also assumed to be a beautifying myth, a legend, whether it was a folk tale/oral tradition, or created by some sort of historian or romantic nationalist of old. The latter seems a little more likely, because it is not documented many centuries ago, and there's a huge gap between the hypotetical events in the early 9th century and first documented ocurrence of the Catalan flag, in the 12th century.
