Description: "El Greco (meaning “the Greek”), born Domenikos Theotokopoulos, is widely regarded as one of the foremost painters of the Spanish Renaissance. His paintings are renowned for their spiritual intensity and use of radically foreshortened, elongated figures, depicted in often brilliant, unnatural flesh tones. Initially trained in Crete as a Byzantine icon painter, El Greco moved to Italy in 1567, where he studied with the Venetian Renaissance painters Titian and Tintoretto. A decade later he settled in Toledo, Spain, where he spent the rest of his life and painted two of his most celebrated works, the stormy View of Toledo (n.d.) and the Burial of Count Orgaz (1586). El Greco’s expressionistic use of vivid color, swirling compositions, and plastic forms influenced generations of artists from Velázquez to Picasso to Cézanne."

Yeah, they say he had a vision 'disorder' that made the elongation occur... some could think of that 'disorder' as a negative.... but for example, when i studied art history in college I could recognize his works in a second! His line work has a sensual rhythm that catches the eye. Incredible artist.

The world wasnt ready for El Greco. If he was paiting in the late 1800, early 1900s i think he would have been close to the impressionists, surrealists, the whole modern art movement in general. Indeed many were as it was openly influenced by him. He was obviously trying to bring new life to the old style and its explorative and free, at times unreal, surreal, dreamlike, hallucinagenic in its daring in a way in which that type of painting generally is not so. Certainly had not developed as such by the time he was doing what he was.

Domínikos Theotokópoulos1, dit Le Greco2, est un peintre, sculpteur et architecte, né en 1541 à Candie, en Crète, alors une possession de la République de Venise, et mort le 7 avril 1614, à Tolède. Il est considéré comme le peintre fondateur de l’École espagnole du xvie siècle. Son œuvre picturale, synthèse du maniérisme renaissant et de l'art byzantin, est caractérisée par des formes allongées et des couleurs vives. S'il fut célébré de son vivant, il a été oublié pendant plus d'un siècle. Redécouvert au milieu du xixe siècle par les romantiques français en particulier, sa peinture extravagante a suscité des commentaires innombrables, souvent en contradiction avec les faits historiques avérés. Sa singularité a influencé de nombreux artistes au xxe siècle, entre autres Picasso et Jackson Pollock.
