I'm Italian and I've been watching Serie a for over 20 years. It's really hard to rank them. Baresi used to play as libero and he's been the best libero of all time for sure. Maldini was a left back for most of his career, then turned into a centre back when he was "old", what a player. Nesta is a pure center back, he's so elegant and clean. Scirea was a great defender, but I had no chance to see him playing. Cannavaro is another amazing centre back, and we all know what he did in 2006. I can't rank them, it's impossible. They're all great players, but If I really had to choose one I'd say Maldini best left back of all time

Matttt yeah that i know, maldini was god at LB, but i wonder who was better in pure defending, not in complete skills, not in attacking or libero skills, but who ad best defending skills, tackling, marking, defending IQ. i never seen scirea play, i seen just few games of baresi, mostly ive seen cannavaro nesta and maldini. i wonder if maldini was better in his prime than cannavaro/nesta? maybe baresi was better? ive seen him destroy brazil in 1994 with textbook tackling

I am italian and I think Nesta was the best. He was unlucky because often injuried in important occasions (world cup 2006 for example) but in my opinion nobody can be compared with him.

Chielini is not half as good as Nesta in terms of defending skills. It was Cannavaro Nesta and Zambrota after Baressi Maldini and Costacurta. Now Italy has Chielini shit. Barzagli is superb though, but Italy is missing the class of Nesta and Cannavaro .
