El Mirador is not a recent discovery as these guys would want you to believe. In fact It was first discovered in 1926, when the original project was funded, then abandoned in 1930 (the rainforest was too thick and none wanted to invest money in the project at the time) and again refunded in 1960 by I.Graham. Only recently in 2003 the "discovery" was launched to the public eye (in order to raise some funds I suppose) and it became a global archeaological mystery/marvel as we know it today.

The sequence starts in 392 BC, to develop those math and writing skills had to take a lot of time. I've been saying, our ancestors started developing way before the established dates, I mean, corn is roughly about 10 thousand years old, that means that some of these cities are probably older than that, also, all these cities were probably connected with each other via those massive roads (Sakbe) from Guerrero all the way to Copan, creating probably one of the BIGGEST acropolis the world has ever seen.

In Lakamha there is a Muwaan Mat from 2325 BC and Ukix Chan from 987 BC. Probably among the oldest written dates associated with a person in Mesoamerica.

The ability to date the site to the preclassic period is new. The "discovery" about El Mirador is not the site itself, but the startling early date that it was built. It utterly changes our understanding of the development of Maya civilization, and we wouldn't have realized that without modern techniques. Granted, Richard Hanson has had a hand in publicizing the site... but it's not like El Mirador isn't mindblowing already, nor like there's no reason to publicize it.

i was brought here after reading el mirador in national geographic magazin, 1987 issue. el mirador was a pre-classic maya civilization according to archaeologist that excavated since 1979. "jaguar paws" is a mayan iconography, which it is the name of the actor in apocalypto movie.

Robert W Because it is extremelly expensive and it takes painstaikingly long and detracted human labor, specially under adverse conditions such as six month rain;y seasons, heat, jungle, government burocracy, etc. Jst to decipher new gerogliphics can take decades if not longer. Just to unearth a building without destroying it can take decades if not longer. Also you don't want the looters to know before you can secure the sites. It's a race against many competing interests, mostly greed and power so secrecy and slow but steady process mostly.

I've come back to Pt 1 after watching all 7 parts. This is a fascinating tour of an ancient site which predates any other discovered in Sth America. In my view it was built many millenia in the distant past, hosting an advanced civilization from another world. Abandoned very suddenly. Mysterious. The guy has been quietly working on the site since 1979 and he takes us inside, shows us around. They've only managed to investigate a tiny part so far. It's massive! Worth watching, for sure. Thanks
