This is the very FIRST song I ever remember loving as a small child. But when the movie and Ms. Mangano were both Italian, I thought the song must be in Italian. That confused me for many years. Now, of course, I speak both Italian and Spanish, and can certainly tell the difference. But this song probably planted the seed of my love of learning languages, so many years ago.

The great Silvana Mangano was a perfect example, how a diva can be whether "icy and untouchable" or " mischievous and sexy ".
@peterquennellnyc3 жыл бұрын
My amazement is not that Silvana had successes at a young age, yes many do that, yes many even younger. My amazement is that singlehandedly (okay with great co-stars and production teams) Silvana "flashed" the entire Italian movie industry (which was then money-losing and inward-looking) onto the international scene worldwide, via half a dozen black-and-white movies from ages 18 to 24. Each movie made a ton of money, which showed all others in the Italian movie industry that it could be done. Very directly Loren and Lollobrigida and Mastroianni and all great directors then found it easy to move forward. I believe that in an economic sense Silvana was the most important actor ever in the world. Reports of for example crowds lined up to see Bitter Rice in London and other UK cities are really astonishing. I'm glad the KZbin community has a new recognition of her, Italy and Spain and I think Brazil have always known. :-)

My Mom (who just passed away a few days ago) had the original MGM 78 record of this. (& I still do) When I was about 5 years old dug into the parents' record collection & this was one song I thought weird but so catchy! One of the ones I kept playing over & over. Mom said it was Italian, & she was right in a sense-the movie was Italian, but it was sang in Spanish, as I just found out not too long ago-it didn't sound Italian to me!

When I was a kid in the 50's I remember my uncle playing this record repeatedly. Hearing it now is so poignant, it conveys me back in time to when so many family members now gone were still around. And Sylvana was so hot....

This is sampled by the Avalanches in Frontier Psychiatrist, and when I watched Cinema Paradiso which shows this scene I immediately recognized the music but couldn't remember where I heard it. Trying to help people who go through the same find it easier on the algorithm.
