Video #3 - Pressing the new gear into the Bafang M600 motor

Luna Cycles came out with a new gear for the M600 motor.
Some people wanted their M600 motor to be quieter.
The M600 is not that loud, but a little more stealthy motor is not a bad thing at all.
The new gear is made of PEEK plastic and it will replace an all steel gear.
Video #1 shows how to remove the motor from a Luna X1
Video #2 shows how to open up the M600 motor and get to the assembly that holds the gear.
Video #3 shows how to press in the new gear if you are having trouble getting it to seat into the cups.

When pressing any bearings into or out of aluminum it is far better to warm the aluminum housing with a heat gun till very warm/hot to the touch. Typically you will find the bearings will simply fall out or slide in. Pressing or hammering can damage the aluminum housing without jigs, it is also far more likely to shorten life of/damage bearings and races especially if the bearings are stainless steal. And no, the heat (unless way, way over done) will not damage seals or grease.

Ride #2 with 1000 feet of climbing and about 15 miles. The gear was way quieter after the ride than on ride #1. So it appears that the PEEK gear needs to break in just like the stock steel gear, except the PEEK gear breaks in way faster. Ride #1 one yesterday, was not very quiet up a steep climb. I was not that happy with the noise level on that ride. I just got back from ride #2 and I do think it is quieter. So that tells me that the gear needs a break in period, just like the steel gear did. I don't know if it is worth the $107.00 upgrade. I guess you would have to decide on that. I am going to give it a couple weeks of riding and then I can record a video doing one of the same climbs I posted here on my channel.

Maybe? The M600 and BBSHD are both better motors than a BBS02. No big deal for me to take apart the M600. Just have to go slow and make sure you are not damaging anything.

In the other video that you posted here in your KZbin channel, kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4DZnaqbltyEnsk, it was mentioned that the peek plastic gear is brittle. The question is: is this gear entirely different than the peek gear that was mentioned. Luna is now selling their X2’s with this new peek gear and worried that it won’t last very long.

I have never heard that the PEEK gear was brittle? I have one in my X1 #1 and it has been perfect. It's been in there for maybe two years without any issues

Possibly set the gears in the freezer for a few minutes and heat the metal plate a bit, then drop the assembly in?

Hi. I own Luna X1 and I have watched your video about X1 many times. So I will call you Mr. X1 EXPERT. One quick question, I have notice dramatic power loss from the motor when the battery level reaches below 25% or so. Even power assist level is 5, it feels like I am only getting power assist from level 1. It is because the bike turns into power saving mode? Or there is something wrong with my bike? Can you please let me know? Thanks in advance

Your battery voltage is way low at that %, so the motor can't go as fast as it could at higher voltages

Yeah, it's not super quiet, but there is no way I'm tearing down my motor to put that plastic gear in there. Looks like way to much trouble. I don't want to mess anything up.

Exactly.....Luna accidentally installed the silent gear (wasn't ordered to begin with)....now I have to tear apart the motor and try to get that so-called "space aged" gear removed (yeh it's quiet but I don't trust it) and replace with the steel gear that arrives tomorrow. Idiotic that people are whining about a steel gear that's quieter than a Traxxas remote controlled truck.
