Amazing what turns up in research, it was planned in colour, but the money ran out, and Berkeley had a problem..the girls in the main could not swim! so the diving girls are the same team in both shots, provided by a local swimming club! Close ups are the films star Goldwyn girls, some of whom could not really swim, and YES why the shoes left on? Great production values done on a very tight budget, but look at the results.

This is from THE KID FROM SPAIN (1932). Sam Goldwyn would literally mortgage everything on each picture. Love him or hate him, the man put his own money on the line with every picture. Betty Grable's only 15 here (!) and Toby's barely 17. This scene was shot in June, 1932.

@hebneh Perfect assessment. How silly it all is, but deliciously so.

Yet another Busby Berkeley-like musical idea with the water formation.

A perfectly reasonable way for the residents of a women's college dormitory to start their morning: Arise, taking turns singing the separate segments of a song. Troop into a large modernistic indoor pool and dive in, subsequently forming elaborate synchronized patterns in the water. Slip down a corkscrew slide back to their streamlined circular dorm room and change into their underwear while lounging on satin sheets. A grippingly realistic, hard-hitting depiction of higher education.

I obviously went to the wrong college. The girls' dorm didn't look like this. For that matter, neither did the girls!
