Rare combination of a jazz stylist with the formidable technique of a concert pianist. How rare is that?

At 09:21 he starts what I think is the most exciting part of his performance. Incredible! When I listen to Eldar, I am amazed at his genius on the keyboard, whether it be jazz or classical, or this piece, the timing is always perfect. He should be supported through Patreon by all of his fans!

Wonderful to see Russians embrace a composer of Russian heritage. In Soviet years, even a Russian-American was taboo. So many Russians secretly loved jazz and the blues and now they can openly celebrate one of their own!

I am so embarrassed I didn't know about his incredible young man until very recently. And I almost punched a hole in the wall when I found out he had been in my area just a month ago at Blues Alley, missing my chance to see this genie perform live. Now, I can really imagine the shock and awe people felt first witnessing a live Art Tatum performance, or Chopin, for that matter. And it is by no means a stretch to put this pianist in such company. He belongs! There are many superlative pianists in the world today. But Eldar is from another planet! Un-friggin-believable!

SHOOT he was at blues alley, I might legitimately cry, dang it

THis song is such a huge part of a New Yorker's soul. Whether they realize it or nit it is the very fabric of what we are. Gershwin nailed it. And the great thing is, it is timeless in its station. In 1000 years it will resonate. I am amazed and it still makes me cry when you feel the passion of those playing it.

I have heard many variations of " Rhapsody in Blue " for orchestra & solo piano. There are even some for guitar. But Gershwin will always be remembered for " Rhapsody ", an ode to 1920's America !

I've watched this a dozen times, Eldar. It's my favorite recording of this piece and I have heard many. Your precision is astounding, but then you know that. Why are you and the conductor not in tails? And the concertmaster watches you like a hawk throughout -- it is because he likes your performance or (incredibly) doesn't?

This piece is so commonly performed that it can almost sound trite sometimes. NOT HERE. With his Jazz touches, Eldar sparks it up wonderfully. Rhapsody is American, but somehow World Music now. Composer: Russian, Jewish immigrant to USA, who dug the Black music he heard. Performer: A guy from Russia where Jazz was once banned! Should we thank Louis Armstrong? Scott Joplin? Art Tatum?
@rockchalky2611 жыл бұрын
Just because Fantasia related this song to New York, in no way means this song is. This is simply American!
@jeanshaffer133310 жыл бұрын
Why didn't they play this at Sochi?
@CosmicTeapot9 жыл бұрын
+Jean Shaffer Because this song has nothing to do with russia or russian culture... Olympic ceremonies are supposed to show off what your country has given to the world, it would've been a bit random for them to play this.

beautiful interpretation on the piano, one of the best i've heard in recent years. orchestra was a little sloppy and seemed a bit disinterested. marcus roberts trio and seiji ozawa have great interpretations, too. so far the worst interpretations are lang lang and herbie hancock.

Russia's national orchestra plays music by Gershwin whose parents fled Russia's pogroms. Thanks to Russia for giving America (and the world) the Gershwins.
@p1anosteve8 жыл бұрын
Don't get me wrong Eldar is definitely a genius.. the Tatum of our time think, but as great as his additions are, I do wonder if Gershwin would have approved. If he'd played it straight .. I think a great performance would have been even better as the orchestra is also superb.

This is the only recording of Rhapsody in Blue I didn't feel I was suffering through at any point. If I were Gershwin, I'd be grateful for this interpretation.
