I have no opinion on ranking as I mainly go off of looks and haven't used them all enough to rank them. But the overhead strike is really good! Idk if it makes it better than the others. That's just my personal input.

the weapon it self has a good moveset and is versitile with the infusions so thats good. But the ash of war has no hyper armour, you get knoched out of the heavy attack all the time, and agile enenmies either dodge or hit from a different angle.

Saying the Great Katana comes with a mid ash of war is not a valid point when you can give it any ash of war. Its way more versatile. I pretty much only use that weapon, the moveset is insane in itself, but if im struggling with a boss i can easily change up the strategy by changing the ash of war. Weather that would be giving it a ranged ash of war or giving it a different damage type like flame or lightning.

in the malenia clip you say you leveled arcane for bleed but you can see that it is standart infused meaning it has no arcane scaling therefore you werent getting damage or bleed from the arcane (in the previous souls game that didnt matter but on er you have to have arcane scaling to scale bleed poison or madness.)

i definitely disagree with the ranking of these katanas but especially the great katana. The great katana is going to end up being one of the best weapons in the game for the same reason that nagakiba is. Bloodloss build up + range + damage + infusable. Ashes of war can be put on this weapon that are objectively stronger than the unique ashes on the other weapons. Flaming Strike Flame Art gives you probably the best ash of war in the game + faith scaling and a way to make up for the slower attacks of a heavy weapon. It also keeps the 55 bloodloss. Bloody Slash/Repeating Thrusts Occult gives you ridiculous bleed build up on top of the already bonkers damage. This is 100% on par with kiba as one of the best weapons in the game while the other great katanas have more specific use cases because theyre unique weapons. Definitely think it deserved to be at the top, not the bottom.

Rakasha‘s Armor + Dragon-Hunter Great Katana + Mimic Tear is very powerful. I just killed the final boss today and overall went through this DLC with no issues.

The Rakshasa katana is one of the first weopns I tried to get. Gone through most of the dlc with it. Just about every humanoid npc I came across died in the first encounter. Just spam the special and they dont know what to do. They get stunned by the hits and when they try to roll away to heal, they can't escape the reach. Also beat a few bosses in the first encounter with it as well. And I switch up secondaries between night and dragon katanas for sheilded enimes or to get some range. I've tried most of the new weapons and i keep going back to the Rakshasa, its insane. It's just easy mode for me lol

Few things (loved the video and all) you say you leveled arcane for more bleed but no occult or bleed infusion so it doesnt scale also you can infuse it with other ash of wars that make it very good.

Bro remember you can give the great katana other ash of wars, like you can give it dual slash which is the same ash of war as rivers of blood minus the blood effects you can also change it to blood affinity so it applies more bleed and you can buff it because it's not a somber weapon, i think you might be under rating the great katana a little

Arcane buffs your status build up ONLY if the weapon has an arcane scaling. So the Great Katana won't do more bleed unless you make it Occult.

DHGK w Mimic and stable armor = destroyer. As mimic can spam the range when further away. Also bonus dragon damage so even better.

The great katana is actually the best great katana because it has no unique ash of war. The other two great katanas don’t have very good ashes of war imo. The dragon one is obviously very good against dragons but that’s super niche compared to the massive variety of ashes of war you can put on the regular great katana

The base Great Katana being at #5 is just dumb. It can be infused with bleed which makes it the hardest hitting Great Katana out of all 3 and putting the Seppuku ash of war on it pretty much guarantees youre gonna be proccing bleed every hit if not every other hit.

This list is a complete 180 from my list. Dont like Rakashas katana at all. Hyper armor yes, but the skill is too slow and opens you up to a ton of damage. Anytime I've L2'ed bosses used the opportunity to delete me.

Something to also point out about the dragon katana. It deals bonuses DMG to dragons specifically. And that's any dragon. So if you do the full bayle quest they give you everything you need including the weapon to easily kill it.

I beat the whole dlc with the great katana, level arcane and make the weapon occult then use impaling thrust (+ poise breaking tear) and its crazy busted. for extra damage use the blade of mercy talisman which boosts damage by 20% on riposte and shard of alexander talisman which boosts ash of war damage by 15%. absolute monster, I was doing 2500ish damage every hit and proccing bleed / breaking poise in like 3-4 attacks. only thing that sucks about it is the massive sheath on your back lol

I fricking love the look of the sword of night katana. But its moveset is basic and short ranged. And the biggest problem I have with it, is the AoW is very slow. Even the quick version takes a second to buffer. You really need to max out dex to make it powerful and even then you won’t have enough to get good poise at 150 and below. And against bosses if you have no poise you have to use the slow AoW if you want meaningful damage and to feel cool and do more than chip damage

The problem is that u basically can't use the special skill, bosses give u a window of 1 f*cking second and u just can hit them one with a single R1 attack

@@JustVC this is one of the bigger problems with so many of the bosses. They're super aggressive and leave very little time before they start attacking again. Ive been using the Moonlight greatsword for the DLC and I end up needing to tank hits sometimes to get the charged attack off.

why occult? Blood Flame blade gives similar bleed build up but more use out of the motion values (typically leading to more blood loss) and you would have higher AR on keen. The only reason is if you don't like using weapon buffs. I guess if you want a decent catalyst then yeah occult is good. since dex doesn't have one

I picked up the Great Katana at the beginning of the DLC and never really put it down. I even dropped the final boss yesterday. Such an amazing DLC, including both the story and gameplay. I just love a big sword.... Having no armor does not help the situation either lol

If i can use unsheathe ash of war on great katana, it will be the 1st katana that i'll use for the whole game. Unsheathe is very powerful. So, i use Nagakiba as main weapon for DLC. Int build with Nagakiba is too powerful.

Tip for that shadow katana, you can also pair it with the carian crest talisman (or whatever its called) that lowers the amount of FP used with skills. Would probably make it pretty spamable

Idk, i like the star lined sword but moonveil is just nerfed. If it did not receive a nerf it’d wreck that just about any day. Regardless, the stagger dmg on moonveil i like more, often because against bosses in the dlc, you’re not really going to get the full combo off.

The great Katana is the best weapon in the game. Legit put a bleed build on with overhead stance, and stun locked the FOOQ out of Malenia. Trust me. It’s AMAZING. The best of them all easy. The stagger is INSANE. I’m on NG+79 right now and I DESTROYED Radahn with this thing

I definitely love katanas because I went with a dex build my first play through but to be honest they don’t flinch half the enemies in the game and they don’t do much poise damage as well. Strength is way stronger but i commited to the challenge of the dex build first play through. Great katanas problably do fix most of the issues however, but instead of successive attacks they’re slower harder attacks

This may be needlessly pedantic, but weapons do not "come with" an Ash of War. It may be tempting to refer to weapon skills as ashes of war, but they are distinct. Weapons have skills. Ashes of war allow you to change a weapon's skill. This is supported by loading screen tips. Thanks for your work!

Sword of Night has way too many downsides as you gain more levels. It scales ONLY from dex and only deals minor magic damage. Combined with its outright garbage range on non weapon art attacks and there are just so many better options. There are no worlds where it is better than great katana with its great moveset, scaling and ash of war slot.

Finally, someone that agrees the Raskasha Great Katana is the best one. Its the 2nd higheat damaging great katana falling short of the Dragon Hunter's. Its ash of war has incredible hyper armour combined with bleed, and it staggers enemies a lot quicker than any other.
