In my opinion, I've got a theory on messmers vision. In the intro cutscene one of his snakes comes down to greet us, and messmer addresses us as if he can _see through_ the snakes' eyes. I believe since his right eye has been replaced, and he can see through the snakes, who's to say he hasn't been blind the entire time?

Messmer can see through the snakes' eyes is a good possible theory, considering the snake directly comes out from his body and is a part of him.
