Elden Ring - Hornsent Questline and Locations (Shadow of the Erdtree)

its interesting that hornsent probably knows exactly why marika enacted the crusade. he doesn't wonder. he just says that marika betrayed his people and must fall - it's a cycle of revenge. like, they did the jar shit to marikas people, and then marika started the crusade. he also says that miquella will redeem 'his' clan. so he is aware of the wrongdoings, presumably having been a potentate himself (headgear description). he wants revenge first and then redemption (from miquella, and for the hornsent) two different things. if you summon him for mesmer, he goes mad with bloodthirst, turning his blade upon you asap as someone belonging to the golden order. if you don't, he stays faithful to miquella, hence joining leda again for the final battle. i think he's interesting. all of the npcs are, really.

@@Kaptime How she discarded Messmer after he did all those atrocities for her sake and taking the blame for it so his mother wouldn’t be hated is reprehensible even if her revenge was warranted. Her son was her tool of revenge whom she feared and thought the serpent within him would possess and turn against her but that never happens.

When does it say marikas people got chopped up? Just because her village is empty dosen’t mean they got sacrificed. All the phantoms and bodies in the gaols are hornsent. I think it was just part of their culture that got adapted for erdtree burial.

If you help Hornsent and kill Messmer with him, he decides to invade you at the Church of Bud. This must be the most random decision and the most random location ever. He was friendly with you last time he spoke, so it's very strange for him to decide to invade. He has no connection at all to the scarlet rot and the Rot God at all, so he chooses the Church of Bud as the invasion point is also very weird. If you kill Messmer without Hornsent, you can have an extra dialogue with Leda. She will inform you she no longer wants to kill Hornsent, because Hornsent has lost his purpose and is completely dejected. In this case, Leda summons Hornsent when she tries to kill you at the end. There's also a bit more dialogue with Hornsent at the end.

Well if you speak to him after summoning him for Messmer, he says that this is just the beginning and everyone serving Marika needs to die. Since the player is more or less Marika's chosen and Hornsent is mad with his need for vengeance he tries to kill you in the end

@@blehhh1057 She's either at the site of grace you first meet her at behind Ensis Castle or you'll only see her again during the final fight with her. Depends on whether you killed Sir Ansbach with her or not

@@RorickSkyve I get the part where Hornsent wants to get rid of all of Marika's chosen, but the Hornsent questline really just ended way too abruptly at a completely random location. In the tower Grandam's questline, you can get the scorpion stew and give the stew to Hornsent. Hornsent is appreciative about it but thinks the stew is the cheap stuff and implies there's a better version. After Messmer, the Grandam gives you the gourmet scorpion stew, which is the better version. There should be an option here for you to gift this better version of the stew to Hornsent and really make him appreciative, which can be a way out of him wanting to kill you. This is a missed opportunity.

For me I had to talk to Leda again. And they won't spawn in at all if you've fought messmer

Hornsent can also appear as an enemy during Leda's boss fight, however I don't know the exact reason why. Maybe if you sprint to her bossfight without engaging in the rest of the quest?

if you kill Mesmmer without him he becomes disillusioned as to why he wasn´t able to kill. him. So he defends Miquella in hopes the he will redeem his clan.

He did appear during Leda's fight though I killed Messmer with Hornsent, but I didn't help him deal with Leda.

psa: assisting hornsent is optional. many players have questioned why the summon signs to assist him against leda is gone, and it’s gone after you trigger messmer’s cutscene. you only need to summon him for messmer to advance his quest, after making sure he’s disappeared from the cross of course

it's because you're the "rightful Elden Lord" and he hates the people of the Erdtree for the persecution of the Horned people (cutting off low-born horns, making the horned ones live under the city aside from Mohg and Margitt)

Without any other dialogue or reasoning, he attacks you next time you see him? Makes no sense. Also he can show up in the battle against Leda, but as an enemy, which is weird considering what he said in that dialogue

So Fromsoft make sure all NPC gonna die somewhere in your playthrough for you to pick up their equipment. I was worry I can miss them somewhere but now I can be sure to just fully explode the dlc map. Thank you.

But they won't always drop the same equipment. You need to do their quests a certain way to get all their stuff.

There is still a way to gear Hornsent's gear if you didn't complete his quest. Late in the DLC you'll be in a fight with some NPCs and Hornsent is one of them. After the fight you'll be able to loot his gear next to his dead body. That's what happened to me even though I didn't summon him for Messmer. I did talk to Hornsent right after the Messmer fight if that makes any difference.

This is one of two outcomes. I'm pretty sure this is considered the evil outcome. You can also loose out on the best pvp ash of war this way, and if you let Leda go after Ansbach you also miss a spell from there. You get all their armor and stuff at the end of the story.

I'm unable to see the signs to assist Leda or Hornsent, but I had accidentally wandered into Messmer's room and backed out to continue exploring more. Pretty sure that broke that part of the quest which is rather frustrating since the ash of war is just immediately lost as a result.

If you assist hornsent all NPC related to Leda quest would disappear, but you can still summon Ansbach and see the end of his questline

@@Romapolitan that is correct, Hornsent won't invade you if you didn't summon him for the Messmer fight, but he'll be in the fight with Leda, after which you can loot his armor set from his dead body.
