I feel like this boss is an 8.8/10 difficulty but then this move is like 15/10. It makes the fight feel really lopsided and weird since other than waterfowl dance, every other move she has is telegraphed, simple to dodge and far less punishing.

Hopefully the dlc will not make its last boss a gimmick super op boss like this so we don't have a sour feeling when we think back at Elden Ring "Amazing game BUT the last boss is the worst Fromsoft boss, cause it's just so hard for just being hard with almost no counterplay".

@@amsteldrag1295 There's plenty of challenging and interesting fights, Malenia is one of them but the design and inconsistency of the gameplay mechanics are generally what people dislike. Additionally, the crutch of saying she's "optional" is the dumbest thing, the game has content and generally speaking people want to do as much if not everything the game has to offer, she is part of that experience, so to just say "oh well she's optional, skip her if you think it's too hard" always felt like a weird gatekeeping thing the souls community does whenever there's criticism towards a boss or the overall design. I write as I'm tired of having waterfowl just randomly decide to pop off in front of my face after she'll sometimes do it up to 3 times based on some arbitrary rng in phase one and also phase 2 lmao

True, I have watched so many tutorials about this close range spining dodge technique. Not once did I ever pull it off... I just ended up duel wielding a cold katana and a ROB with +9 spirit of ash black knife Tiche. After 80+ attemps I finally beat her with only 8 HP with me... She waterflowed my anus so hard, I no longer have constipate problem... Maybe I was underleveled... I was LV 106 with +20 cold katana and +8 ROB...

To fight him, we need to use every thing we learned before including mikiri counter, deflect, dodge, jump, timing,… While Malenia is kinda bad designed since the only problem is just the dance, remove it and she will be a mid boss with or without the healing ability

The issue I find with is I use a heavy weapon - the Zweihander, so usually when she starts water fowl, I'm recovering from an attack, and don't have the time to initiate the spin before she starts the attack, I can definitely see what's meant to happen though, so maybe at some point I'll get lucky and be recovering from the roll-attack, which is very fast for the zwei and be able to pull of the initial spin.

Hey not sure if you beat her yet (hopefully you have), but the best way I found around this is to bait her to it with a dagger once her health is below 70% health, then switching back once she's done, a crossbow or bow is good for this too

(6 months ago but who cares) Unless you know the boss‘ moveset, you should really only rely on the ultra greatswords crouch stab, roll stab, and jump attack. Once you know which openings you can exploit, you can start opening up more with the standard moveset.

@@Nova-FranconiaI did eventually learn which things I could punish, and perhaps more importantly, which things didn't give her hyper-armour, and my strategy eventually evolved to a hyper-aggression strategy in tandem with the mimic tear, where we would pressure her as much as possible while she lacked hyper-armour, and I accasionally ran away from her to try and quickly back into range to bait out a Waterfowl dance that I could just run away from. Probably a little cheesy, but she requires unconventional tactics with slower weapons.

​​​​@@tabeatamm3594 when i fight malenia i have a pretty reliable experience with just rolling out of the majority of the strikes and healing damage from the 1 or 2 that I can't but it's impossible to dodge them all without being extremely autistic or extremely lucky, every guide for doing so online is like build your character exactly this way and fast roll at a roughly 35 degree angle to the left on this exact frame but no greater than 37 and make sure to do a ballerina twirl and tickle your nipples for good luck, it's fucking stupid and i don't know why any normal human being wouldn't just stunlock her with charged or jumping r2s instead. the boss is clearly designed this way with a priority of generating press from shitty gaming journalist outlets in mind and having her go down as "the hard one" of this game like nameless king of ds3 or demon of hatred or isshin of sekiro (except getting good at those fights is fun because they aren't reliant upon hyperspecific mechanical contingencies) of course the average fan of this game is braindead though and unable to fathom that friction is not inherently good by default and it has to be actually designed competently, no of course from software and miyazaki are literally demigods incapable of making mistakes it's all on us we just need to git le gud XD

Been a huge FromSoft fan since DS1, have over 250 hours into ER, never felt the need to beat Malenia after I kinda gave up on her the first time. After coming back and replaying ER leading up to the DLC, I decided to fight Malenia again and my feelings are still the same: this fight is ridiculous and goes directly against the precedent and design philosophy that From has set with their games when it comes to “hard” fights. Waterfowl is only part of the issue, the healing combined with her super fast combos makes incremental mistakes way too punishing, AND she gets hyper armor seemingly whenever she feels like it. Like what? If any one of these three things were removed, and you kept the other two, the fight would be fine, ridiculous still, but fine. From fanatics can defend this fight all day but Malenia is Elden Beast tier to be honest. I love From, and fights like Isshin, Midir, and I would say even Godfrey all seek to test the player’s mechanical skill to the highest degree, but fights like this just force the player to sadistically bash their head against the fight with one sided mechanics that are seen nowhere else in the game.

How do you deal with Malenia snapping to your position using this strategy? I’ve found the unlocked 360 circle to be more consistent for me than the locked sprint. How is this issue dealt with if doing the locked on sprint strategy?

To be honest it's hard to deal with, the trick is quite precise, the timing at which you start to sprint is important. I tried the no lock on method and i only did it once successfully. This method I get a good like 90% of the time I'd say with a few hours of practice

I was using lock on for so long and getting that timing was so tricky, especially because the timing involves whether or not you are exiting an attack animation or are far from her and want to close distance then circle. The 360 is tricky because you have to get used to the spacing under her, but I actually learned it faster than the lock on method. What's great is that you just need a 360 or even less, and she guaranteed won't snap to position. I'll have to give the lock on method more of a try as well, I want to figure out which is best, but you should try it and see how it works for you

​As a rocket league player i find the lock method way easier because u have constant vision on where she is dashing. If u want to make it all the time u have to adapt yourself on her timing and not turning blindly. The problem is distancing. You have it set for her to always cast it so you can preemptively go under but in the actual fight you’re never that close and you won’t be able to react fast enough to close the distance before she drops.

Just use a frozen pot, guys. This move is just bullshit and was obviously not playtested well. Hit her with a pot which instantly cancels the move and freezes her while taking a chunk of her damage. Any build can use the pots and the Concentrated Snowfileds has the item needed for the pot.

I must have a different version of the game. I am dead before the 1st dodge and there is not enough time to even remotely rotate around her. I can defeat her with some difficulty and I have done many many times, but she is definitely the cheapest boss I have ever seen in my life. Very poor fight design. She is the only boss that after defeating her, did not gave me the satisfaction of achievement. I felt like I wasted my time and it's the same story for every playthrough. Cheapness. Your tutorial is nice though, thank you for that!

happy to help! It might need some more practice because I will say unless you are expecting it or you purposely play super close ranged all the time with this strat in mind, it can be hard to get in there in time. I have had the best success with more so going off of feel for when she goes for it, but theres been some times where I am mid attack animation and i barely pull it off without taking damage.

@@ManOzzY middle distance is subjective to everyone of course but I'd love to help: So assuming middle distance means you are like 1-3 medium rolls away atleast, you should be able to just out sprint the first flurry by going backwards away from her, (you should also jump or roll when she gets closer to you mid flurry as it covers more distance / gives s) and you can even do the same for the second flurry although i prefer just doing the roll into it as its muscle memory for me. This works even if you are pretty deep near her, as long as you react semi fast and start running when she goes in the air, you should clear it no problem. The only time this strategy (one in the video) should be used is if you wanna be extremely aggressive and dominant the fight, or she started it while you are recovering from an attack animation, or style points. Hope this helps/ answers your problem!

@@randomgamer3868 Middle aged and work 8 hours a day 5 days a week and I agree with his opinion. Bosses like these are exactly why I started playing FromSoft games with commitment and dedication last year. O&S had me stumped for a whole week. Fume Knight literally took me a month to beat between fighting it and just giving up and progressing the main game and coming back it over and over again. Isshin had me sweating and I spent 2 hours fighting him in the run I finally downed him. Nameless King pushed me to the point where I had no Flasks left and had less than 100 health left and I still had to hit him 4 more times and did it. These bosses are what makes FromSoft games and I wish they were more numerous. If that means I lose time to play other games that's fine by me, there's barely any worth playing anyways aside Baldur's Gate 3 last year.

Took me forever to defeat her on my first run. It really was this move alone that caused the majority of the problems for me. Someone said on pc they were able to change the button input of dodge so that it works at the press of the button instead of release, and this takes away about 50% of the difficulty of the game. When you only have a few frame window to dodge you basically cannot react in time when the input to dodge time it takes is 1/3 of a second. In a game like this, that might as well be a full minute lag time between input and dodging, because it basically means you have to memorize what the enemy will do and dodge about 1 second before they strike for it to work. It is so so damn hard to play with that significant input delay. I really wish I could change this button input on PlayStation.

Totally agree with you that dodge should happen when you press it. But that’s inevitable when you have - dodge, sprint AND jump back - to the same button! And don’t get me started on how long it takes for a strong attack to happen while riding the horse..! 🤮

I'm not entirely sure if light roll is a must for this specific dodge, but from my personal experience armor is useless against her therefore it's always better to use light roll. That is if you're not planning on using another strategy, you could use full heavy armor set + buffs to tank her, or use a shield with the vow of the indomitable... Depends on your build I guess, but either way you have to be careful with that annoying lifesteal bullshit. I managed to solo her using freezing pots, it always stuns her out of the waterfowl attack but it's slow as fuck to throw. By the way try using throwing knives, this baits the A.I to use the kick and you can safely punish it by spacing or rolling in to the attack. Good luck bro!

For some reason I can circle around her consistently in coop but in singleplayer it seems to work differently for some reason. I'm on keyboard so I just hold E and Space (sprinting left) and my player circles around her, no problem. I have consistently dodged waterfowl many times in coop when helping people with her, to the point that I've no hit her in coop several times. For some reason in singleplayer though, I do the same exact inputs and instead of my player circling around her, it just runs to the side like an idiot. This really has me stumped since I know how to dodge waterfowl, it just isn't working. I'm thinking maybe since I'm playing more aggressively in coop I have more time to react and am closer to her? This is a pain in my ass for my rl1 playthrough, no hitting her is pretty hard. I just don't understand why the inputs do different things in coop and singleplayer. I may have to try it on controller not locked on but I'm not familiar with playing on a controller.

When you’re a summon the game is more lenient with enemy attacks to account for latency, that’s why it seems much easier to dodge her as a summon than as a host

If you pre-run the first waterfowl you can outrun the first flurry dodge into her for the second then a dodge in then backwards for the third. It at minimum reduces the amount of health she regains.

I have a simple strategy for anyone. You dont need frame perfect dodging. Although it is the simplest method I could think of, you need to practise. Your best choices are if you are lightly equipped. You can dodge further and run faster. This makes it easier to dodge her. There are two scencarios: 1) If she starts her waterfowl dance and you are far away from her, run away from her 1st phase. Once the 2nd phase starts, roll trough her like what he did. In her 3rd phase, run towards her. Once she passed you run away from her and if necessary roll away from her. See also 1:04 as an example. 2) Make sure you have enough health and stamina! If she starts her attack and you are too close to her: Use a big shield (I used the big wooden shield), block the 1st phase. Then do the rest in scenario 1). There are other "easy" methods like throwing an ice bomb towards her or use a skill to create an ice storm to knock her back, but things like those require perfect timing. Not to mention in Malenia's 2nd phase, she can't flinch while she is doing the waterfowl dance attack. Atleast, I never managed to make her flinch in the second phase.

You don't need to roll trough her in 2nd cycle, just keep running, literally, and then roll forward on the 3. If you are far away and reacted fast enough, you only need to roll once to in the entire move.

No , it’s just a part of the puzzle… the heal is one of the hardest pieces to beeng avoid, because it’s so frustrating fighting her for minutes, parrying hard attacks, dodge others, dodge /run out waterfall, crit her multiple times, and after few min you see your flasks reaching 0 and her health nearly at full because she hit you few times..all hard work for nothing..I parry half of her attacks constantly by now, but the last remaining pieces are still out there to be solved , waterfall, ( got an idea ), the parry offset window at certain attack,

This is the worst thing about FromSoft games. The enemy tracking is absolute BS. There's zero reason a good boss fight should have the boss be able to do a full 180 in mid-air. Not to mention that follow-up strikes in their attack chains should not allow them to cover the entire arena.

run. just run away from the first one, dodge if the end of it reaches you, then run towards her and dodge the second attack, then do the same thing for the last but make sure you are continuously dodging backwards. also throwing an ice pot at her can interrupt the attack

I appreciate your effort but unless you use a mod to get her to only water foul like you have, the first way you dodge the attack is very very hard to do consistently and honestly this technique got me to eat the first attack in full way more often then it helped me dodge it.

I think that this move demanding perfection is bogus when in all the other games perfection was obtainable but not required. Sekiro never did this, so I don’t even know where this attitude from Malenia is coming from. Deeply flawed move alongside the flanking phantoms in second phase. Otherwise this would be my favorite boss in the entire game as I often no-hit or first try first phase even after taking extended breaks. Wish this boss was better. Wish I could love her.

This definitely helped, but what really did it was using Ranni's Full Moon with mimic tear and Carian Regal Scepter. The first run that I tried that spell gave me victory. She can't dodge it very well and the frost destroys her.
