Okay, so: - Hit 'em with Crystal Darts. Did not make them go berserk. This tells me they aren't Golem enemies - Not all living pots contain viscera. Some contain poison or oil and will explode upon death. This seems to be limited to smaller pots. - The Soldjar's of Fortune Ashes describe them as 'Reckless Spirits'. The best I can guess is that living jars are inhabited by spirits and once animated seek to fill themselves. Since the restless spirits yearn to join the Erdtree, and so wander to the minor erdtree, where the avatars crack them open to feed the roots. But Alexander was filled with the viscera of mighty warriors, and yearned instead to fight valiantly, despite being a brittle jar.

The pots all contain corpses. There's a giant pot in front of a castle that you can clip your camera inside and it contains a massive corpse. The real question is are the pots themselves sentient, or do they take on the personality of the corpse that is placed inside? I feel like Alexander's dialogue implies that he wasn't always a pot.

Played this game with a friend. He started on pc first and joined me a few weeks after launch on Xbox. We kinda skip around, go to many areas a solo player at my level would have no business being in. We get to the Haligtree and we have to take a break for a while. So in my down time I start getting super interested in the lore. Specifically the lore of the Haligtree and the only hero/good person in this game Miquella. Go on KZbin and see there’s a 1 hr 30 min video on just this one aspect of this massive game. 90 minutes on 5% of the total lore maybe. This game and the community are unequal in passion for environmental storytelling and detective theorizing. Nowadays everything is dumbed down. You watch movies and there’s the inevitable info dump scenes. One where a character looks at us the audience and tells us what we’re seeing. FromSoft respects the players intelligence and ultimately allows us to fill in the blanks. It’s show and not tell storytelling and it’s sorely missed in today’s media.

You might notice that around the minor erdtrees, many of the broken pots have smaller trees growing out of them. Similarly, in every boss room in the various catacombs, you see gnarled erdtree roots intertwined with half-rotted corpses. In one of the first catacombs you explore, a ghost mentions that a warrior can only achieve "true death" through root burial. Furthermore, many of the larger catacombs are named after specific heroes who were buried there, such as the giant slayer. Other's are mentioned by npcs or ghosts by name. I believe that the jars serve a similar purpose to the catacombs - to provide the erdtrees with the corpses of heroes to use as fertilizer. The more powerful the hero was in life, the more sustenance the tree gains from them. The primary erdtree houses the Elden Ring, which is (or was) in the control of Queen Marika, and is capable of bestowing great power. It's my theory that Marika coveted this power, and so the Golden Order was founded, with it's guiding principle being that true death can only be achieved through the rite of root burial, and that only powerful warriors are to be given such a burial. This is done to ensure that a large number of heroes strive to become powerful in order to achieve a true death, while they, in truth, are being used as fodder for the erdtree so that their power might be utilized by the gods. And then there's the matter of the Elden Lord. When you speak with Pope Franklin (turtle joke) he tells you that Radagon, who was Renala's consort, was merely a champion - and yet, despite this, he was elevated by Marika to the title of Elden Lord. Radagon leaves Renala, breaking her heart, to become the king consort of Marika instead. The entire event seems rather fishy. Then, and spoiler ahead for those who haven't discovered this yet, through regression, the player discovered that Radagon and Marika are, in fact, the same person. However, I don't believe that this is entirely accurate. I believe that she, in fact, either consumed Radagon, or fused with him somehow, in order to absorb his power for herself. We can see a parallel to this in Lord Ryker. After being devoured by the serpent, he also became fused with it, and in so doing he learned that he could imbibe the powers of those he consumed. In this way, he sought to become a god by devouring the very gods themselves. I believe that his part in the story is to prove that gaining power in this way is possible - that by devouring a warrior, their strength becomes your own, similarly to Aldritch in DkS3. So, I don't have all of the pieces yet and this is an evolving theory. But, I believe that the purpose of the Elden Lord was to become incredibly powerful so that Marika could devour them, either to gain power, or perhaps in order to sustain herself. Her children, the Demigods, would then vie for the position of Elden Lord, and the strongest of them would eventually be devoured by her. Godwyn was meant to be the Elden Lord, however he was slain on the night of Black Knives with the help of the death rune stolen by Ranni in order to prevent his assimilation into Marika. In response, I believe that Marika shattered the ring herself, dividing it among the demigods, knowing full well that they would war amongst themselves in an attempt to collect the runes and ascent to elden lord. However, they all failed, and so in desperation, Marika began to lure the Tarnished, who were capable of using runes to enhance their own power, into the lands between, through the guidance of grace. If none of the demigods were up to the task, she would instead rely on the endless potential of the Tarnished to produce the next Elden Lord.

In regards to Radagon, I believe that he is actually one of the runes of the elden ring made manifest, in particular the rune of order. The rune of order can be obtained through Goldmasks quest line, and finding out that Radagon is Marika. Marika has been shown to be able to remove runes from the elden ring before, such as the rune of death, because she is the elden ring. It's possible she used the rune of order to split off a piece of herself to better control her armies, which is initially what Radagon was for. He fought in the front lines in her wars. However I don't think him falling in love with Renalla was in Marika's design. In fact after Marika shattered the Elden ring, Radagon tried to put it back together again. I think that's why he forged himself into her again, the rune of order, the crisscross pattern you see in the elden ring and behind his statues. It seems that even if Radagon is a part of her, he has his own mind, although Marika having some sort of control over him seems likely (such as when he left Renalla for Marika suddenly). Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk, I just wanted to add that theory as possible

Well... Yes. Erdtree burial is stated to be a great honor, and one of the only ways for someone blessed with grace and undeath to be fully laid to rest. At the end of most crypt dungeons, we can see roots of the Erdtree entangled with corpses, after all. However, as a side effect the soul is then trapped within the Erdtree - and this is how we utilize spirit summoning ashes. Not *all* summons are created this way, but most seem to be.

Some ancient cultures in Asia buried their dead in pottery vessels. The pot boys are probably inspired by that practice. Lore wise, I imagine the pot people were created after the rune of death was separated from the elden ring. So either the already buried corpses came back to life inside the pots (similar to how you are resurrected as a tarnished) or the pots were simply filled with undead after shattering of the elden ring to contain mortally wounded undead who can't die. Like the puppets, but with gore. When you start a game you are given a tiny spec of grace which resurrects you. The same could have happened to the already buried corpses of warriors. The pot boys eating the remains of other fallen warriors implies that they can possibly consume the grace of others to become stronger. Being familiar with ancient burial practices, I recognized what the pot boys were after killing the first group.

I do believe the Living Jars contain the bodies and souls of the fallen and they weren't made to be that sentient, they were created to provide the Erdtree with sustenance in the form of corpses and souls, that's why we see a lot of broken jars near Minor Erdtrees, once they filled their purpose they are broken. Maybe Alexander was the first to deviate from that purpose, by himself of the souls that were inside him, and took the path of the warrior, then some followed and formed Jarburg, perhaps the ones in there weren't warriors but commoners who took a second chance in life away from battle. Souls have many paths in Elden Ring: they go to the Erdtree or they become omens by the curse of the Dung Eater and the former curse in the royal family or they become jars when their bodies and souls are trapped inside them.

This was a pretty interesting theory! I too have wondered about the Pot People. However, there’s always one question that I keep on asking: What is the origin of the Pot People. It seems rather unlikely that they were just always alive. It would make more sense that they were created. Perhaps they were made as some sort of ultimate soldier. After all, if the pots can harness the power of deceased warriors and use their power, it would be quite useful for (let’s just say) a king to still have an army even if his troops are dead. Just a thought.

Something even more interesting about the fertilizer pot bois, is their connection to the erdtree guardians and the avatars. The avatars generally sit in the center of a pot boi grave yard and the erdtree guardians patrol the area surrounding it. It is my hypothesis that the guardians and avatars are parts of a cult dedicated to the seeding sprouting and nurturing of new erdtrees. Each cultist has a seedling implanted into their back, and that seedling takes root in them. At some point, the cultist becomes immobilized but the size of their sapling and the erdtree beings taking root in the soil. Other cultists find and begin caring for the sapling using the jar bois. When the tree gets big enough it manifests an avatar (Probably using the former body of its original host) and this avatar is used to directly feed the tree from the jars. It's also my guess that the Tree Sentinals act as outsiders for the cult, attempting to locate rooted saplings.

A nice video, but quite a bit missed if you ask me. One of the main points to bring up is the description of the jarwight puppet One of Seluvis' puppets. Use to summon the spirit of a jarwight. Spirit of a man who wished to become the innards of a livingjar. A jar-hurling specialist who throws all manner of pots and jars. The warrior jar once told the nameless man this: "You are not yet ready to join the warriors inside. No, you must apply yourself! Better yourself, and one day I will return for you." On top of that, since the patch a little while ago, they added a new npc to jarburg who asks if you wish to become a "potentate" whatever that means. So it would seem to me that its more likely that while the warrior living jars to eat corpses to obtain power, they're not purely scavengers, but seek out powerful warriors to best and take inside of themselves to become stronger, with the eventual aim of becoming the greatest champion. Also, the broken jars by the erdtree, I thought it was much more likely that they were attempting to take the power of the minor erdtrees, either by taking the crystal tears, challenging and consuming the erdtree avatar, or by simply eating the tree itself. It always seemed to me that the way the jars were smashed they didnt just go there to die they were just smacked in by the erdtree avatars. As a side note, the erdtree avatars were created in order to defend the minor erdtrees, source from the description of the staff of the avatar, so clearly there is a reason for people to harm the minor erdtrees. Either because they don't like the golden order or perhaps simply to take its blessings and power. Would love to hear other peoples opinions on this!

Small correction* alexander fights radhan before going to his town not after and fills his innards with the fallen soldiers and then goes to the town.* the players will already know this by the time they find jarburg, lol.

I just can't wait to get more lore videos on this amazing game. Had to take a week off for it, and it was fcking worth it. Sadly people are still not really over with it yet, so lots of stuff would be big spoilers. But i hope in a month we can start watching endgame lore content too!

I was watching the Kurosawa film Kagemusha today and there's a scene around 50 minutes in where it's discovered that the great leader Shingen Takeda's body is being held inside a jar that looks an awful lot like Alexander and the other jars. A theif cracks the jar carefully and creates a shard shaped VERY MUCH the same shape as Alexander's shard talisman and we eventually see the lord's body inside. Takeda's red samurai forces are seen in Sekiro in Ashina when the Interior Ministry invades near the end of the game and the movie takes place at the end of the Sengoku period. I think this movie is something FromSoft takes inspiration from in multiple ways since it isn't even the first Kurosawa film to be referenced in a FromSoft game

My theory is the Erdtree is akin to the lifestream from FF7. They're strings of souls reaching upwards and downwards forever. I think the pots were likely used to bring souls to the trees to feed it like fertilizer until the tree itself because the recycling of infinite souls. The pots were made to house souls to keep the cycle alive until the runes were stolen and it became stuck in a state of limbo. In the different endings, whenever the world is set back in motion, the Erdtree becomes a normal tree again instead of the gold strings that act like it's spirit. The final boss is a creature of the cosmos made of strings of stars and constellations, likely the souls of universe itself made manifest. I love lore videos and I really think Elden Ring is the age after the age of darkness in Dark Souls. It's whenever the world started again but was put into a state of limbo. If you make a video, I'd love to see if you can find more facts to support it. -ChaosReverie

It seems like the Living Jars touch on Egyptian Canopic Jars that housed the organs of mummified corpses. In a game where death doesn't really exist due to the death rune being kept under wraps by Malekith. Maybe the organs continue life in the jars, while the mummified corpse husks "live in death".

the reason he left is SUPER CLEAR. dialogue from Jar Bairn quote "Have you met Uncle Alexander? He used to live here with us, but then he left, to be a champion. I asked to go with him, but he said "The path of champions must be trod alone"." I guess this video was made before the 1.03 update though gg

I think that connection to Alexander and the crucible knights will help tie together the ant queens and the black bladed knights. The event that kicked off most of the game was committed by women, the black bladed assassins of Numen. When you kill the ant queens you not only get a rune ark (typical of defeating human, or npc players), and a Numen rune. You find these ant queens leading into Nokron, and the other eternal city. Which maybe that they were cursed by the greater will into taking this form... idk just a thought lol

I was under the impression the jars approached the minor erd trees to intercept the souls returning and consume their strength. The lid on the jar does indeed display the erd tree but not in the gilded reverent hues we see elsewhere. It is displayed in red, which may indicate a perversion of the tree's intended purpose. I assumed the reason the jars were busted up and cracked was due to combat with the powerful erd tree guardians.

In the lands between spirits are brought back to the erdtree by their bodies being absorbed by the roots of the erdtree and then they can be reborn again. Given that the jars have the erdtree symbol on them and the number of broken jars found by minor erdtrees I'm wagering that the true purpose of pot, or at least their original purpose, was to gather corpses to return them to the erdtree.

I bet the living jars exist to bring bodies and souls back to the roots of the erdtree! You know how those hunchback statues say "for those returning to the roots"? That's how you "die" in this world. You return to the erdtree, which returns your soul to the erdtree.

I think your theory about Alexander being greedy is wrong since he states that a warrior never looks back and he left to travel and be stronger in jarburg there are plenty of bodies left the bigger question you should be asking is why are there people poaching them
@binaryburnout3d
@binaryburnout3d 2 жыл бұрын
Wait. I got it. Marika removed the rune of death from the ring and gave it to Malakath. because of this, the only way to 'die" is to be consumed by the roots of the Eard Tree, so warrior Jars are meant to collect the remains of the fallen warriors throughout the land to bring them back for their Eardtree burial lest they be claimed by the Tibia Mariners. . . they also work to ferry the dead from the larger catacombs to the minor Eardtrees. So poachers hunt the Jars down for what ever material they have weather it be runes, or armor, or even just the remains of these warriors for grafting. Alexander seeks to become a mighty warrior to protect other Jars from poachers.
