Aiight, I'll bite. He loved him as a brother because of all that time Clay supported Apollo, even since they were children and Apollo was a scared little kid whose father figure had to leave in an orphanage. Who teached him the 'I'm fine' motto who guided him through all. They grew up together, stumbled together through life and in the end, managed to get into their dream careers, both of them trying to follow into the steps of a model figure. Then Apollo realizes the law is getting screwed, Phoenix is not what he thought he'd be and his boss betrays him. Then then he has a harrowing year with only three more cases that more than show him that law IS indeed getting screwed, had to confront his boss again for good and fights for a new system that in the end ultimately gets canceled or forgotten. So that was a horrible year but still your best friend looks like he's doing alright and his model figure seems very legit, so you can be happy for him! He's even going to space, his dream come true. And then Clay gets killed. The man he knew from his childhood, who was through thick and thin with him, all the way. Who was going to make his desire come true. Apollo then realizes the new lawyer who he was getting along great with was lying about something very important that maybe could yep him avenge his friend, but he couldn't confront that, even to the point of denying himself his gift so he could still try to work with her. The mofel figure of his brother is then the most likely culprit in the deed and by then Apollo can't bring himself to trust anyone. Not the law firm, not the law, nor other role models. He only wants one thing, and that's justice for Clay. Feeling more lonely than ever, he turns to the only source of comfort he has left, the only memento his friend left, which represented his dreams and his hopes since he was a little tyke. The jacket. He swears then to bring him justice even if it meant doing it alone, knowing also that he was a liability for the agency in that state, thus the leave of absence. Clay was the force that carried him to the end in those hellish weeks and that, ultimately, became a central point of the disappearance of the Dark Age of Law and that made Apollo grow and mature even more. Finally free of all his doubts, he could let Clay rest in his heat as he was going to trial one more time, with his mentor, now in all his former glory and in his side, to confront his friend's killer. They, all of them, succeed and in the end, watching that rocket fly, he knows his dear friend is now resting in peace, and that is his duty now to advance on his own dream as much as he can, for he who could not too. Fiu, that was a long ass essay I wrote there, thought I can agree that if it needs an explanation that long, you're probably on the right track xD
