It is astonishing that this smart, original show actually ran on American network television - and that it ended both _as_ it should have ended and _when_ it should have ended. And other details in specific moves and characteristics. Like, there's a scene in Michael's office when "real Eleanor" (i.e., Vicki) and Bambajan are there, and when they keep referring to Eleanor and Vicki as "real Eleanor" and "fake Eleanor" and Eleanor finally is so bothered by it and says (I don't remember the exact quote, but paraphrased), "Can we stop referring to me as 'fake Eleanor,'" Bambajan steps in and says (again, paraphrased, as I don't remember it word-for-word), "actually, it helps me a lot to refer to you two as 'real' and 'fake' Eleanor." It makes so much more sense on the rewatch and makes it quite clear they're torturing them! And this happens a lot! Michael's conversations with Chidi before the reveal always involve adding yet another choice out-of-nowhere and overemphasizing the importance of Chidi making the right choice (i.e., he keeps reminding Chidi Eleanor's life is at stake, he keeps pointing out that the mistake has "ruined" the algorithm and that there's no way to be sure they're making the right choice - Michael plays it off like he himself is being indecisive, but basically, it's obvious in hindsight that he's setting Chidi up to be miserable no matter what he does because he can't possibly know if he's made the right choice 😂😂😂)! Even simple details make sense - like Vicki and Bambajan telling Eleanor she should go tell Chidi she loves him (when they're discussing her *case* on whether she gets to stay in the "Good Place" - like, that's a "strange" decision) moments after a painting made by Chidi is delivered to Tahani that is *exactly* what Michael told him to paint for her, all while Chidi is in the middle of a nervous breakdown over the aforementioned "what if I screw this up and Eleanor goes to the Bad Place? Also, I can never know if I was right or wrong because the mistake has scrambled the algorithm" conversation with Michael! At first glance, it's a throwaway "love triangle" moment. But on rewatch, it is *patently* obvious *not only* that it was meant to pile on the torture of Chidi, but also how well thought out the torture of Chidi was! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 And on that note, I should say, I theorize that another reason the plan failed was that these characters (especially Chidi and Tahani) were far more resilient to their torture than Michael or the demons expected. Simply put, the situation I mentioned above - where Chidi was *already* having a nervous breakdown *before* the pile on - should've *broken* Chidi! I theorize that Michael thought, at that moment, Chidi was going to go catatonic (like Cameron in Ferris Bueller's Day Off when he sees the mileage on the car) due to being so overwhelmed by stress (because he was *already* having trouble breathing *before* the pile on)! But, on rewatch, I noticed Chidi actually did *really* well to calm himself down in that moment when he was about to have the panic attack of all panic attacks! Feel free to assume that that theory is wrong or insert your own theories, but I wanted to mention that theory because it's fun and actually makes sense given the context - i.e., the show includes several minor "twists" when characters actually display a major moment of growth at an unexpected time when everything is about to fall apart (i.e., Tahani becomes *truly* selfless when it seems like her selfishness is about ruin everything. Chidi calms himself down when his anxiety is about to ruin everything. Etc)! It fits perfectly, and I like the theory that *not only* were *we* the audience not expecting those "twists" but *neither* were Michael and the demons (and those "twists" are often what ultimately halts their plan right when it's about to hit its point-of-no-return)! 🙂🙂🙂🙂 Anyway, hope you enjoyed my comment!

@mazdakmina94936 ай бұрын
LOL I actually have a theory that Michael's plan "failed" because it didn't work as well as he thought it would (and not just because of the time it lasted, though that's not unrelated). Simply put, there were *a number* of moments in the show where a "twist" (a small one) happened when a character actually overcame/outgrew a major flaw that looked like it was about to upend everything and "break" the situation beyond repair (i.e., the characters would be forever miserable afterwards)! My theory is that *not only* did these moments surprise *us* (the audience), but *also* Michael, who thought those moments would "complete" his plan and that the four of Eleanor, Tahani, Chidi, and Jason would never recover! But the fact that a character outgrew their flaw and "saved" the situation before it became unfixable threw a wrench in Michael's plan - and ultimately, allowed them to "survive" (without completely breaking) long enough to keep their wits about them to figure out what was *actually* happening! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I believe the best example of this is when Eleanor and Tahani (egged on by others that we now know were demons the entire time) told Chidi they loved him! Simply put, that happened *right* as Chidi was having a full-blown nervous breakdown thanks to Michael (who piled on on Chidi moments before that moment about how important it was that he make the right decision *and* about how there was *no way* to know if he made the right decision)! My theory is that Michael figured *that* added pile on of Eleanor and Tahani saying that would send Chidi over-the-edge and he'd go catatonic and the situation would no longer be salvageable! But Chidi actually showed remarkable growth in that moment and calmed himself down! There are *a number* of moments like this (like when Jason is refusing to allow the train to return from the Medium Place), and my theory is that Michael banked on certain bad decisions being made by certain characters that would make the situation unsalvageable, but these characters kept surprising him (and us)! The show strongly implies that if Chidi breaks in that moment, or Jason refuses to let the train return, then (in addition to the situation becoming so horrible there's no fixing) these characters feel so depressed and terrible that they go *truly* insane! My theory is that Michael actually got it to the brink of that point *multiple* times, but it "fell apart" at the last moment due to a character showing surprising growth at the last possible second! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 So yes, thanks for mentioning that, because I theorize that Michael's plan *did* "fail," because he was looking to break these characters' psyches beyond repair, and *failed* to do that - but came *awfully* close to doing so *several* times! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Short version: Michael *very nearly* succeeded (both in time *and* in quantity of "torture"), and your comment is a lot closer to being true than many of us realize!

Without further context I went: "So that's hell, and everyone is pretending there's been a mixup and that's her personal torture". I was not spot-on, but I wasn't too far off either. Still, the way the show handled the reveal and the following plot was honestly very good; there was a couple of wacky scenes that were a bit too surreal, but for the most part the message of the series got across and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a crying mess by the end of it.

Why'd they make this whole show super adorable?

I will never forget the first reveal since I accidentally made it 100x more impactful. The first episode of The Good Place I ever saw was on tv when they are all in the real world and Michael is interviewing that one guy about how to live a perfect life and the bar fight. I thought it would be an interesting show about angels exploring humanity or something, so the entire first season I was waiting for them to go to earth for that episode, only for the reveal to happen and blow my mind since I had thought it was all real. Was an amazing experience

michael's nasty little laugh when elanor gets it the first time is truly perfect.

This was my lesson in figuring out how far someone has watched a TV show. My roommate told me how much she loved this show and then I was like “Isn’t it really shocking when they find out that the good place is actually the bad place?” And she was so shocked😅

ironic that all they needed to do was to copy the good place to torture them, getting what they want, they no longer enjoy it and are in eternal boredom for eternity, nothing good happens when you get exactly what you want.

Yeah, I thought that was brilliant, how upon their arrival at the good place, they found that the eternal blandness was driving everyone mad. The whole show did a lot of really insightful takes on the problems with various kinds of mythologies and philosophies, and the whole human condition.

This was so crazy to watch the first time. Then when you watch it over, you can really see how obvious it was. The show writers are amazing
