Australia never gives harsh punishments for sexual assault or r@pe. I went with a friend to support her while she reported a grown man for raping her and also told the police he was dating a 14 year old and that she was only here to make the report so another person, namely a child, wouldn't experience what she did. They said "sorry it can't be proved and we cannot do anything"

This. Stuff like this is what happens when the justice system trivializes sex crimes and the abuse of women. I've heard so many stories where the perpetrator was a criminal that was let out far too early. Why cant we throw the whole book at them instead of just a page? Why must we sacrifice our safety for the freedom of criminals?

This a huge problem in the justice systems around the world I think & what's even more crazy a lot of times the suspect has sessions wit therapists & they tell the courts this person still has violent tendencies & will offend again but they still somehow are let out 🤦🏾‍♂️ like I get if their sentence is up they can't jus hold them for no reason but maybe something else needs to happen before they are ever let loose in the general population where they can reoffend if u know what I mean? Because Australian justice system is as slack as all get out….as for being on parole I live in Brisbane and apparently it’s NOT an offence to commit a crime while on parole aka it won’t go against your parole…what a joke why bother with parole. I always thought if a crime was committed when on parole it mean straight to prison. Apparently not, well not in Brisbane anyway, dear corrupt pally doesn’t give a shit if a crime is committed when on parole. As for youth crime, close to where I live in two seperate instances 15 yr old boys were murdered by other youths, but the perpetrators got more compassion, rights, and protection than the family of the victims. The quicker she is voted out the better our state will start to be, once all her corrupt decisions are undone …. Crime, they just get a slap on the hand, she doesn’t care less about anything except herself and lining her own pocket. People actually voted her in because she kept the state “safe” during covid, I was dumbfounded that people would have such a stupid reason for voting this narcissistic woman in again. I remember this case, it was extensively covered I think mainly because she was from Ireland, they don’t usually bother with reporting crimes/murders from other states, media doesn’t think it’s important for the public to know about. It was so sad, as any murder is and I am not surprised he was out on parole, I am surprised he got 35 years, they don’t normally get that long in Australia…most murders are out in 5-10….they are so gutless when it comes to justice, like we might upset someone if we come down hard on people. 😡

Guys say all the time: “just be polite. If a man hits on you and you don’t want it, be polite and tell them no.” This is what we are afraid of. This is what happens when we say no, no matter how polite or friendly we are. This is why we are afraid, and why we don’t appreciate “persistence” when it is unwanted affection. This is why we can’t walk home alone, or go to the bathroom by ourselves in a bar. This is why we “lead guys on” and give out fake numbers and don’t call back when we’ve already said no and they will not take no for an answer.

I'm from Ireland, pretty close to where Jill was from and I remember a teacher in secondary school speaking to us about safety and not walking home alone, she showed us the CCTV footage of Jill and it was so jarring, it was pretty soon after it happened. I remember it being on the news, it was everywhere. It's just so sad that this happened. I hope her and her family are as close to at peace as possible ❤

As a person who lives in Melbourne and who has lived/worked on the north side, I really appreciate you covering this case! I wont lie, orignially coming from a small country town I would walk home by myself at 3am after going out in the city.. when i think back to that time, I had absolutely no street smarts and cases like this remind me that even "safe" areas are not safe. This case was another example of the Australian court system letting down the police and the public. The Aussie police are second to none when it comes to catching these scumbags, sadly our weak sentences imposed by out of touch magistrates continually put violent repeat offenders back on the streets. Parole boards and magistrates should be held accountable for their actions, it is only then that we will see these predators put away for the good of society.

Don't forget magistrates and juges can only give sentences according to the law. They cannot make up their own sentences even if they would like to sentence someone to more years. It is out of their hands.

I lived in melb for years and i always walked in groups at night too and even with a few women together you would still get harassed..once during the day i was harrassed by a man in a brand new Mercedes and i almost threw my bike at his car i was so outraged, i took to wearing fake buddy holly glasses and army boots but it didnt stop really. People say, oh its what women wear…eeeer no its not…its the fact you are a young woman. Heck i was wearing baggy sweats and baggy top not showing anything…still hassled.

I'm from Sydney, Australia and Jill's story was huge here. It is honestly so heartbreaking. I had no idea that Adrian was caught through his license plate (or that he had a girlfriend). I was 20 years old at the time and it made me so scared as a woman who often walks home alone myself. I still remember when he was caught and felt so relieved. I lived literally on breese street Brunswick which was like 1 min walk from where she got killed on Hope street at the time. It was so unreal when it happened. The area is quite populated and so when this happened it shocked a lot of people. She was so close to getting home which makes it it so much more terrifying and tragic.

I remember this case when it happened (live in Melbourne). The amount of victim blaming was *horrendous*. Anyone and everyone who mentioned this case would say that "Jill would still be alive if she didn't threaten him." Essentially, almost everyone around were saying that if she hadn't told Bayley (during the r*pe) that she worked for the news etc, and she would make sure he was found, then he wouldn't have killed her. That's the mentality over here. It's no different now, either, ten years on. The misogyny is real. I always found it really f*cked up that it was the automatic response/comment to blame her for what had happened to her, not to attack Bayley and his actions and his motives. So dark. I've never felt unsafe walking in Melbourne alone at night, with the sheer visibility. But I probably should reconsider this.

I am from Victoria Australia and at the time my family was in Melbourne (I was 10) I remember not knowing much about the darkness of the world at that age but I remember we were walking home from dinner and I saw her missing person posters on light poles and I just knew in my heart she was not alive anymore. This case was a core memory in childhood about the darkness of the world and the prevalence of violence against women. I remember feeling an emotion I could not put my finger on even at that tender age. RIP Jill x

I know arm chair detective accusing the husband is a very small part of this case. And I know that partners generally are involved and are the first suspect. But saying “it’s convenient that her husband was the one that noticed she was missing” is super messed up. If my husband doesn’t notice I’m missing and he doesn’t report me missing then he’s definitely guilty.

I love listening to your videos and appreciate your research and the effort you put into explaining cases in more detail, though the titles you use make it hard to find previous videos about certain people that I want to refer back to. I understand the need for a catchy title but when I try to go back to re watch or show someone when I'm talking about it I struggle to find the video as the names of those involved are often excluded. Not sure if you came across this in your research Eleanor but Bailey also violated is parole a few months earlier when he king hit a mate of mine on a night out and broke his jaw. He had a court date, plead guilty and they let him go back out on bail after he appealed his sentence. He was caught being violent yet again and they just let him back out on the street. The Victorian court system let Jill down.

I remember this. I was living in the same neighborhood as Adrian Bayley at the time and was familiar with his face. I had walked up Sydney Rd half an hour before her attack. The missing posters were so sad and there was a huge march for Jill down Sydney Rd and massive flower piles at the local church and in the alleyway. It was all anyone talked about for ages. This happened on one of my holidays to Melbourne. I was with a friend of mine, and we had gone to Brunswick Street for dinner and a few drinks that night, but we ended up staying out quite late. This happened while we were still there ☹️ When the news came out, it was one of the big moments in my life that REALLY opened my eyes that anything can happen at any time. The world is a scary place.

This absolute germ of a human should never have been paroled. The way the caught him out was amazing, he had her sim card on his coffee table (or similar) when they came to question him at his home.

I am Australian. It is very normal for Aussies to do a “pub crawl” on Friday and Saturday nights because in most of our towns and even small cities, the bars and clubs are set up on most street corners. For example, the town I grew up in had a population of 15,000 and had eight pubs on eight corners, and all of those corners were maybe a 1-2 minute walk at most. So you’d regularly see Australians that had worked hard all week, going on a pub crawl and walking with their friends or co-workers from one pub to the next until they all close around 1 AM. I did it many times in my late teens and early 20’s so I related to this story instantly and I’m so sorry that this happened to Jill. I bet the husband is kicking himself for missing that phone call.😔😭

Could you look into the unsolved case of Noah Donahoe? He was found dead in 2020 under suspicious circumstances, and his mother has been fighting police for information on his death, for them to investigate her son's death.
