Ok, so each state has electoral votes based on HOR and Senate. House # is based on population, whereas Senate is always 2 (with the exception of Maine and Nebraska). For instance in NY, there are 28 electoral votes (26 House and 2 Senate), but only 3 in Alaska (1 House and 2 Senate). Remember there are 2 Senate votes for each state (except Maine and Nebraska, as mentioned earlier). So when you vote, the state that wins the majority/popular vote gets those “electors”. Those electors meet to decide whom the president will be. It helps because if we had a popular vote system, as there are more Democrats in this country, they undeniably win every time-and we definitely don’t want that. You’re welcome. 😊

The state I’m at had it this month ( August) The popular vote the one in November is where we elect either one of the candidates Trump or Biden. But this popular vote doesn’t determine who wins... NUmber of EC votes are the same number of congressional reps, and Congressional districts are supposed to be assigned based on how many people live in a place (ie Population density). So theoretically, there should not be a disparity between popular vote and EC votes. Such a wide gap occurred last time because of the “winner takes all” situation ie. The vote was split very close in several states which caused almost half the votes in those states to apply to the party they didn’t vote for. So The culprit is not EC. The culprit is the “winner takes all” condition. That’s what should be modified.
@dasikakn5 жыл бұрын
Steven True If you’re referring to a senate race, then yes, you are correct. Wyoming gets 2 senators just like California even though California exceeds its population by an order of magnitude (ie. 10x). This is one argument for the splitting of CA into multiple states. I’m not really for that. Seems like a big price to pay for an increase in the number of politicians🤮. I’d be for folding Wyoming into another state but it’s unlikely they’ll give up power. So let’s forget about that. One could consider modifying the EC to stop including the 2 senators for every state. This is where most of voting power discrepancy comes in because it essentially triples a Wyoming voters’ relevance (1 congress person + 3 senators = 3 EC votes). EC came about as an incentive to fold the smaller state into the union. One could argue that Wyoming no longer needs that incentive. However California with it’s powerhouse economy (5 or 6th biggest in the world) now probably needs an incentive to want to stay in the union.

The EC does factor in population sizes in the electoral counts (bigger states get more) but was designed to give more diverse representation in our government and prevent a handful of overpopulated cities from controlling the fate of everyone. In this day and age of silo group think this is critical. A malevolent force could easily manipulate outcomes of centralized populations but harder to manipulate dispersed ones (you can fool some folks all of the time type thing.). It is also a recognition that we are a united STATES where all states deserve a voice at the table.

I love how they forget to add that the Federal government represent the "states." Our federal government is similarly setup like the EU. Even in the EU, the people do not even get vote for the heads of the EU. But their governments representatives do. The whole point of the Federal system is for the states to have a vote in the Central government while each "STATE" has their independent bureaucracies. This allows states to become more autonomous, and why they there were so many restriction and limits on the central government. Why? because it allowed those state to govern base on the people locally dealing with local issues while the Central government supposedly deal with issues affecting the whole country while making sure each state had a voice and not be overrun by the tyrannical majority.

Why is anybody talking about popular vote. It’s a flawed idea. The Constitution was drafted to protect each State, not each person. The States then protect each person. Fun fact; in the Constitution have a look at the word “United” it is lower case “united”, this was to indicate the Constitution was a contract between “united States” not “United States”, meaning, the people weren’t part of this “contract”. The Bill of Rights came later. Why would any “State” surrender its sovereignty to a more popular “State”.

It’s a tricky debate. If we simply went went by popular vote, it is likely that the majority of future presidents will be democrats. And that is most likely true even now. And as time passes, you would need to factor in the next generation. From the studies I’ve seen, the young tend to lean left by default. This gap will likely widen the bipartisan disparity even further. I can see the frustration of elections generally revolving around the decisions made by five states or so. But at the same time, these smaller population states deserve a significant say in the outcome of our country as well. But then again, many of them don’t even acknowledge liberals as Americans, but traitors to the country. So maybe that extension of fairness is somewhat wasted on Americans who would deny that same basic status to others.

On the other hand, the Electoral College won't benefit the Republicans for long. The number of Electoral College votes a state has is determined by population size via the census. Cities by nature grow in population and rural areas, at least at this point in our history, are maintaining or declining in population. As we've seen in this 2020 election, large states that usually trend "Red" are going or are at least very close to going "Blue." Even if you ignore the traditional "swing" states, all it will take is for Texas to go "Blue," which it will do as it's rapidly growing and liberal cities continue to populate, and Republicans will have no path to winning the Presidency. In the long run, the Electoral College benefits Democrats - not Republicans. I wonder how the Republican party will address this issue, once they realize this.

That's one of the reasons you hear that old csa/kkk terrorist propaganda phrase, "WE DON'T WANT TO BE RULED BY THE COASTS!". What happened when the terrorist "welfare queens" lost their "free stuff" from the USA government? What happened when the terrorist slavers could no longer easily dominate the USA national government and national politics? The csa and kkk are just low-life, MS-13-type gangs of butthurt, terrorist "welfare queens". After causing the civil war, the Electoral College became a "welfare benefit" for states which suppress voting. I wonder which states LOVE to suppress voting .......... might they be the former terrorist states and terrorist sympathizer states? Eliminate the Electoral College. It has poisoned the USA!

Basically: if the whole world had a vote, India and China would win, because they have a lot of people. But we can’t have that now can we, to do so would be democratic, so instead, give each country 1 vote instead of each person 1 vote, and by doing so you guarantee that you get voted.
@dorethaweatherhead23244 жыл бұрын
Both the electorial and popular vote should be done away with think its so stupid that the citizens voted for a president and he still has to get other votes its like you have to vote for yourself all over again its just so stupid .

If the Democrats want to get rid of the electoral college then I say we count by county votes. That way the politician would have to work for more than just big metro cities and work for a wider voter range but I'm sure they wouldn't like that at all since most of the country is red.

U.S. Constitution Article II Section 1 Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress... The states are not in any way constitutionally obligated to hold a popular vote for president. As far as I know Republicans control the legislatures in enough states to elect Trump if they were to abolish the 2024 popular vote and directly appoint presidential electors who will vote for him.
@JTH-hm8ew3 ай бұрын
In theory a state could enact legislation to randomly draw a name out of the jar to determine its electors as absurd as it sounds and it would be perfectly Constitutional.
@niltomega2978 Жыл бұрын
Think about it. If the contest were to just win the popular vote, that would be an entirely different campaign strategy. Presidential candidates would only campaign in the most populated parts of the United States. There would be no need to campaign in the smaller states like Iowa or Maine. They would be ignored. THIS is why the electoral college was created to make sure ALL states have a say in the election. If states had no say in the elections, they would secede from the nation, which is why the electoral vote was created.
@dreamypupper4080 Жыл бұрын
That is incorrect on *all* accounts. If you visit the top 10 cities you wouldn't even amass 13% of voters. And states wouldn't secede from the union because they cannot secede from the union, and *definitely* can't succeed if they secede. Moreover, if you have something even better than the popular vote and electoral college, like say preferential voting, you'd have a much more diverse political system which allows everyone's interests to be factored in.
@niltomega2978 Жыл бұрын
@@dreamypupper4080 I didn't say the top 10 most populated cities. I said the most populated areas. In a popular vote there is no way any candidate visiting Maine or North Dakota . Back in this country was started there were many states threatening to secede if they were not represented it's all a moot point anyway you're never getting rid of the Electoral College

Why does anybody care what the popular vote is. That’s not how we do elections in the United States for a very good reason. If we did a popular vote, then six major cities in this country would decide every election. All the people in Kentucky and Kansas and Wyoming And north and South Carolina every rural area in the country would have these six major cities running rough shot over them. It would be a dictatorship of people who could care less about what was happening in the rest of the world and the rest of this country. Do we really believe that only those people should get to decide what happens because that’s essentially how it would end up, I certainly don’t. I absolutely would never want someone that’s living in Los Angeles to decide issues that are important to me in Virginia.

You just need to use your brain in fact...popular votes will always favorite democrats cause they win all the big cities in the states with the biggest population.
