Electric Composters: Reencle Vs. Lomi

I've reviewed Lomi before, but I got the chance to test out Reencle, which is another electric composter with some differences. I show the set up of the Reencle, and then go into the differences between Reencle and Lomi and talk about what I like and dislike about each.

I have had a Reencle for a little over 2 years. I prefer that I don't have to buy activators on a subscription because the microbes in the machine self perpetuate. I just wanted to add that you do not have to replace the filter on the back of the machine each time. You can open it up and replace the activated charcoal pellets in the filter and reuse it.

Yeah, it's nice to not need to buy the activators! And good to know about the filters - they definitely don't seem to be marketed like that, so thank you for that information!

I've got both a FoodCycler and a Reencle and I use them synergistically, the FoodCycler for bulk volume reduction and the Reencle to rapidly break down the scraps into a dust-like consistency. I've even found that I can process pork and chicken bones in the FoodCycler if I pressure cook them for a few hours to force out all the collegen and make them super brittle. Once they've all been shattered into bone meal, I just add it to the Reencle for added phosphorus and calcium amendment.

Nice! I've not tried the FoodCycler yet, but that's great that you're able to break down bones first before adding to the Reencle, because that Reencle sure does process food waste super fast!

I've used both for several months and I completely agree! I'd NEVER buy a Lomi again, after going through two units and several buckets that broke on the bottom where the gear attaches to turn. The Reencle just works.

Yeah I think the Lomi is a good idea in theory but I think they do have some things to work out. I haven't run into issue with it yet, but I anticipate it, but Reencle is amazing!

It's so hot and humid in the deep south that composting is easy and fast in the backyard.

Yes, outdoor composting this time of year is definitely going to be easy! I don’t think I plan to use any kind of electric composter much, if at all during the summer months, but in winter when the weather is bad (we don’t get snow here but when it’s gets dark early and is cold or raining), it could be a good option!

This is the comparison I'd been waiting for! We currently own a LOMI, and I agree with all of the points you made. We are on our second unit after the fan stopped working. In hindsight I wish we would have bought the Reencle. I believe the Reencle also uses less energy which makes it even more environmentally friendly. LOMI customer service is not very responsive, which I did not appreciate.

I am glad you found it helpful! And I agree, while the Reencle has to be plugged in constantly, I still think overall, it's more energy efficient than multiple cycles with the Lomi. Of course, since it's summertime right now, composting outside is easier, but if I want to give my outdoor composts time to actually decompose, using Reencle is great, and it is way easier to walk over to Reencle and add to it whenever I want vs. wanting to wait until I have enough food scraps to fill the Lomi up to make it worth running a cycle.

Thanks! Reencle definitely scored more points overall! All of my compost bins are still PACKED so I’ll be using Reencle to give my bins a chance to decompose and cook more!

The Reencle is exactly as described by the video here--treat it as a food trash can. Drop in food and walk away. When the weekend arrives, I harvest some compost for the garden to make space in the Reencle for next week's food waste.

Vermicomposting can be done indoors and all year round indoors.

This is true, but some people might still have a smaller space and can't have a large worm bin and if doesn't break down as quickly, you might still notice an odor. I have a small worm bin in my garage and even though it was sealed, it still attracted pests.

Porque no los dos? Feeding the output from the Reencle to your worms is like a superfood for them. Compost worms don't have teeth so they have to rely on bacteria to break down bulk food scraps benefit they can ingest them. If you do all that long work ahead of time and in an accelerated manner, you can have worm castings in days rather than weeks while also reducing the amount of unwanted vermin in the process. It's a huge win-win for all involved.

Which one is better? Reencle or romi?

It really depends on what your situation is and some of your preferences, but overall, I'd go with Reencle.

I like the concept of using both machines in tandem, but these days Lomi has been outclassed by the FoodCycler Eco 5 and its Vortech blade system that produces a dust-like consistency rather than dried pellets.

Yes, electric composting definitely isn't for everyone, I think definitely people who don't have yards to compost or space for worm bins would be able to benefit if they know they could use the finished product enough to make it worth it!

Worms take too long and the bin attracts vermin. But, by all means, you can also feed the output of either machine to your worms and they will process the scraps so much faster.
