How can electron be moving randomly in a conductor when they are deposited on the surface of the conductor and cancel each others electric field.They only align themselves in the presence of the battery.
@FriendsPhysics
@FriendsPhysics 4 жыл бұрын
According to free electron theory of metals, in the absence of any external field, the valence electrons in a metal are free to move and are not bound to any specific atom (or nucleus). These free electrons move across the whole lattice randomly with a speed which is determined by the temperature (square root of absolute temperature, to be precise) and is of the order of 10^6 m/s often called as fermi velocity. If I am wrong, kindly correct. Thanks.
@bethanyrumkui2293
@bethanyrumkui2293 4 жыл бұрын
@@FriendsPhysics Maybe the electrons move in such a way that they cancel out each other's electric field(in opposition direction) something that you also mentioned while talking about current through metallic conductor.Will electric field inside a conductor be only zero when it is exposed to an external electric field or can it be zero without any electric field in this case?
@FriendsPhysics
@FriendsPhysics 4 жыл бұрын
@@bethanyrumkui2293 E filed inside a conductor is zero when there is no potential difference applied across it ends. When external field is applied, the elctrons drift opposite to E field.
