At the time this song was released, Little Richard was in divinity school. In 1962, he was touring again and hired a new organist: Billy Preston, who was just 16 at the time. Part of the tour was in Hamburg, Germany, where his opening act was the Beatles. It was there that the Beatles and Billy Preston first connected.

Jay and Amber, for just a moment, put yourself in the shoes of a teenager when this song came out. So much of the music was "safe" (and probably "parent approved", lol), but there wasn't much out there that connected with the unbridled energy and angst of young people... and then the local radio station plays this song, and you hear Little Richard LETTING LOOSE. Can you imagine how free they felt when they heard that music? And knowing that it was their music, and not the music of the older generation, and that it gave them permission to be wild and crazy themselves? The man didn't just have one of the most powerful impacts on music, he literally helped usher in a brand new culture shift, not only in America, but all over the world. His influence cannot be overestimated.

When you think about where music was before this point, smooth balladeers standing in one place, then a Little Richard comes along and turns the energy up to 10! Many artists rerecorded his music (Pat Boone for one) but no one could recreate the energy he created on record or live. Gotta react to "Tutti Fruiti" (a reworked naughty song), "Lucille" and "Keep A Knockin" You need to get a live performance from that era to get the full scope!

My Dad grew up in Macon at the same time as Little Richard. Macon was segregated back then. In spite of that, Little Richard frequently found himself across lines that you were not "supposed " to cross.. One of those places was a white teen hang out called "The Pig and Whistle". He was able to do that because as teenager a little older than Elvis, he was at the forefront of Rock and Roll and was able to entertain the white kids with his singing and his ham-boning for a quarter. Yes it was sort of "Cringey" (and maybe not even "Sort of"), but we need to also note that his ability to "Cross over" in a time and a place like that was incredibly important to how transformative the music of Little Richard and Chuck Berry was. Rock and Roll was a critical part of breaking down all sorts of barriers.

The fact that you are responding to 1950s music and that you seem to be open to a lot of things, and your mention of swing dancing, really suddenly made me think of the incredible and very important early black performer Louis Jordan. He was primarily a sax player but also a multi-instrumentalist and always a bandleader. He has tons of material including some interesting live videos, very few of him as a young man but they are out there. Many of him as a much older man because he was popular for decades. I think he really got rolling in either the late 1930s or in the 1940s. And while he had a reissue or rather a re-recording of a huge hit of his from 1947, which was released in 1956 and added a kind of rockabilly Chuck Berry guitar featured in it, and it's a really fast up-tempo swing, I actually like the 1947 version better, because it's just a richer sound with the horn section and the saxophone is the featured instrument there, and it's a slow swing so there is time for all the double entendre and punch lines to sink in and get the real feeling of it. It really captures that Great Depression and World War era feeling, and I bet you guys would absolutely love it. Another one of his huge hits that I remember my grandparents really being into and that Joe Jackson did a great cover of in his spectacular album from the late 1970s or early 1980s called Jumpin Jive, which was a tribute to all this older important music, is called Is You Is Or Us You Ain't Ma Baby? But this Louis Jordan song I was talking about is actually called There Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens. It's such a great song and it's hilarious. And I really got into it a few years ago when I was raising backyard chickens during the first couple years of the pandemic. Here is a link to the wonderful 1947 big band version of it, which was a huge hit in America at the time: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/apmraGqjlNeNmqM

It goes more then that. Richard discovered the Beatles. He discovered Hendrix (although he would go on to say Jimi was a star before even he got him). Rock n Roll would not exist today if it wasn't for the influence of that man.

Little Richard, and even the genre of jazz were influenced by Fats Waller who was active during the height of Harlem Renaissance. With his created style of "stride piano" he was instrumental in the beginning of jazz. If you want, play probably the oldest video you'll ever play, "Honeysuckle Rose" which he wrote in 1929.

A true pioneer, Little Richard influenced many generations of artists. CCR covered this song on their Bayou Country album from 1969. You can hear John Fogerty's vocal style has some Little Richard elements but John's lead guitar playing takes it to another level.

The Beatles payed tribute to Little Richard with their recording of Long Tall Sally. A young Paul McCartney just shreds this song. Along with Ringo’s drumming and George’s guitar work, it’s definitely a must. High energy.

This is the kind of music I grew up on. My dad is gone now but when I hear songs like this I can still picture him dancing and singing this them around the house. Thank you for the reactions!

Great song and I like your enthusiasm. One day you may want to listen to the CCR version, where John Fogerty powers through those lyrics in his own way. In the CCR version, the piano is more or less replaced by guitar, which changes the vibe a bit.

I heard Little Richard say that he was the Architect of Rock and Roll several times. To me he's like Patti LaBelle in his performances, they both give you a 1000% every time! Even if you don't like the song you still want to see them perform it because you know they'll be awesome! LOL

That's usually Lee Allen on Tenor Sax on most Little Richard songs from the 1950s. I believe the artist formerly known as Prince was influenced by both Little Richard and Jimi Hendrix.

I've always loved Little Richard! Truly one of the founders of rock n' roll. The Beatles got to know him when they toured with him just before they made it big. Paul McCartney has always credited Richard with being the inspiration for part of his singing style. Not many can hit those hit notes! Fun fact: Little Richard had a role in a very funny comedy you should react to "Down and Out in Beverly Hills". Stars Bette Midler, Nick Nolte, and Little Richard as the next door neighbor. The whole movie is very funny and his performance is priceless!

Well, this gets you up dancing in your nightgown.💃💃💃🕺🕺🕺 Such a great classic song from 1956. This was inspired by sax player Jackie Bronston, who played with Ike Turner on The Rocket 88. The piano playing is phenomenal, guitars, drum and sax player add to the frenzy of this great tune. Little Richard's vocals, out of this world. The Swinging Blue Jeans covered this in 1964, Mitchell Ryder 1966, and CCR 1969, and also sang it on The Ed Sullivan Show. Funny enough, all the sexual innuendos in the song weren't noticed by the producers of the show. Great reaction.Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦

Try a Beatles cover of a Little Richard song called Long Tall Sally. Use the album version.....Paul kills it.....he does it better than Little Richard. Also, Paul's best Beatles vocal is Oh Darling.......you MUST review that underrated song please. Love you guys
