This is a re-upload without the music. I received feedback about how hard it is to hear me with the music. I want everyone to be able to hear me and hopefully gain something from this build. Thank you for watching. I really appreciate it.
In this video I build an Electric Forging Press. I used Harbor Freights 5 ton electric log splitter.
I started out by removing all the pieces that I didn't need on the log splitter. Then I cut 6 by 3.3 in I-Beam into two 5ft sections and two 1ft sections. I also used 1/4in plate on the top and the bottom. I have no experience welding so I asked a friend to help me weld the frame. Kyle not only welded the frame for me but he also fixed the ignition on my Miller welder so I could finish the project.
Now that the frame is welded I figured out I wanted to mount the splitter to the frame. I used two small 1/4in plates stacked to make the bottom mount. I drilled 4 holes in it to receive the bolts sticking out of the bottom of the log splitter. Then I used 3/4in by 2in bar stock to make the top mounts for the plate to bolt to. The plate was welded onto the wedge of the log splitter then bolted to the rails on the frame.
The carriage was made from two 3in sections of the I-Beam butted up side by side then welded together. Then we welded 1/4in plate all around to make a box. I used 1.5in angle steel to make the guides. Then I used blocks of steel to make the die mounts. I welded one on the top of the frame, then bolted on top of the carriage. I use angle steel again to make the guides. I cut one side short. I used 1/4in plate as the base for the dies.
I used 16 gauge sheet steel to make slag guards.
I Painted everything with Truck Bed Liner.

I Re-Uploaded this video without music. I got some feedback that the original video with the music made it hard to hear the Voiceover. This Is my 1st real video where I talk and didn't want my voice to be drown out by too loud music.

That's so cool! I like it better without the music so I can actually focus on what's happening. Wow!

awesome, it seems pretty powerful for only 5 ton, i usualy see the hydrollic presses in the 20 ton range or higher, my only crit is, if i was to make one, i would have to flip everything over so the moving plate was on the top, even tho that would be a much bigger pita

That was the one compromise. I had to make with myself. But I understand exactly what you’re talking about. I was afraid that if it was upside down, the ram wouldn’t return as fast. But then again I could’ve probably put springs on it. If I had to start over, I would definitely want a 10 ton press. But the 5 ton press definitely helps save my elbow.

Hi I like the fact that you designed it to be in line with the piston and not with a "sliding saddle" like the horizontal equivalents. What is your opinion now a few months down the road. You still happy? Tnx :-)

I’m actually working on a video where I use the press to make Damascus. I wanted to see if it was up to the task. So far it really does work good. I do have a 144 layer billet. All the welds set with no problems. However I will say if I could do it all over, I would have gotten a 10 ton press. But the 5 ton press is faster than doing it by hand, and a whole lot easier. lol

Man I am glad you put this together! I’ve had this project on the back burner for months. Once I saw some one do this vertically it made much more sense. Less shifting dies and seems safer. The only problem is I couldn’t find a good video showing how they accomplished it. So thanks for doing the step by step with tutorial! I’ve got a 7.5 ton splitter sitting in my garage waiting.

Thats awesome! A 7.5 ton splitter would be even better too. Im really glad the video helped.

I didn't think it would work vertically. Was there any modifications that you had to do to vertical?

I didn't have to do anything to the log splitter to be able to run it vertically. It will be fine either way. The hydraulics is a pressure system, gravity wont effect it. @@TCMW2020

I think this is the best DIY video I’ve seen on how to do this… Thank you… Do you know how much it cost you to make ??

Thank you so much. Not including the log splitter, the steel and materials cost about $300. Most of that went to the I-Beam.

I've read the hydraulics on these don't like to be up vertical - something about fluids. I'd be curious if you run into any issues. For sure having it vertical like this is a big space savings

I asked a diesel mechanic about running it vertical, and he says since its a pressure system it fine. Gravity doesn't play a role. It's kinda like an excavator runs a ton of hydraulics and they move in all kinds of positions. The electric Motor doesn't matter which position it's in either. So I figure it's ok. But we'll see I guess. Ill do in update video in a few months or so. Thanks for the comment. It's something to watch out for.

Thats a great question! If I could go back and change something, I would probably get a 10 ton log splitter instead of the 5 ton. But it does work. I used it a few times to draw out material. It does make things go quicker than hammering by hand. But it's not lightning fast either. It might only go a little bit quicker, but it is a whole lot easier than drawing everything out by hand. I still haven't tried to make Damascus, yet. But that is something I want to try very soon. Or at lease a San-Mai billet.
