Welcome back to RBR guys and this is the one car I’ve been dying to drive because it has the potential of being not only the first genuinely desirable EV in my opinion, but also potentially the best daily use #gclass in it’s history. This is the G Wagon G580 with EQ Technology, the first EV G from #MercedesBenz.
This Full EV comes with a 116 KW battery, and 4 individual electric motors,146 HP and almost 300 per each wheel! So a 588 BHP beast with 1164NM and a 0-60 to match the G63?! Insane. We also have the unique modes in the EV othat we will experience today : G Turn mode, the famous tank turn! G Steering, extreme turning radius for off roading which allows you to drift -- And OFF ROAD CRAWL - almost cruise control for off roading. All unique to the EV G Wagon.
OH and it has its own signature sound called the G ROAR, that I’ve been dying to try.
G has had a long history, but over that history and despite the shapes it came in, the purposes it served, or the people it elevated: it’s remained unchanged, #strongerthantime Mercedes say. And it’s hard to argue, no other modern car survives like G does.

I as a neighbor would be very excited to not hear the combustion roar every morning, that's why I heavily support all EV owners in our street and own one myself. The roar on the interiour is a good way to still have fun while driving. Why does it matter so much if the sound is synthesised or not? I am a car enthusiast myself and owned a C Class Coupe AMG, I loved the sound so much. But I learned that it is not all about sound and that you should respect other people that want to rest, especially in city environments. I for myself decided to put respect towards other people over my "need" of having a fun sounding car. I'm not talking about you (because I don't know you) but I wish that people would understand that every "fun" acceleration in city streets makes one driver happy for a few seconds but annoys hundreds of people who have to live with this noise all day and can not properly rest from work.

It’s really cool and has decent offroad capabilities. For mountain and off grid use EVs aren’t that useful though (I have tried with a Taycan CT 4S - there are no chargers in the mountains!). So good luck going far away from the main roads, or staying «outback» for days on end. When is that ever going to be possible with an EV? I also wonder about what happens when the batteries expire; the EV depreciation rate reflects that. Then there is the sound; I love the sound and sensation of the supercharged V8 G-Wagon. Indeed, I just took it for a spin with the windows open.

Do you also wonder what happens when the powertrain on an ICE car expires? Usually they only have a warranty of 2 - 5 years. Warranty on batteries are usually 6 - 8 years so automakers actually seem to be sure that the battery is even more durable than a traditional powertrain. The battery will also degrade in these 8 years but not as fast as many people think (many think they will be dead in two years like a phone but a phone is charged 5 - 10 times more often than cars in the same time). Of course a battery swap is (currently) really expensive if it actually breaks, but prices will drop significantly in the future so it will propably be comparable to a typical engine or transmission swap.

@@casaxtreme2952, the biggest dealbreaker for me is not being able to charge in remote areas. On the G-Wagon you have a 100 litre petrol tank and can fit a spare tank on the side. There’s no fitting a spare battery if it was electric. And you can refill petrol anywhere. It’s about USD 5K for a complete rebuild of a V8 engine. I doubt you can repair an electric engine (indeed, I had a USD 18K engine replacement on a MB B electric). The scary thing when an EV engine fails is that the car might just stop suddenly and completely lock the wheels - it might be rare but I’ve experienced it and it is extremely dangerous.

@@andreasnarum An internal combustion engine can lock up as well and then lock up your wheels. Also, there is a multitude of safety functionality that triggers adequate reactions in case of a malfunction in the blink of an eye.

Wondering,,, I drove a '21 g63 and afterwards,, didn't want it. Felt too heavy, nose dive, body roll. Wondering if this one is any better?

Well, because the battery is all the way down in the ladder chassis, it should have a much lower center of gravity. If they have put enough thought into the suspension, that might (just might) mean that body roll and nose dive could be less. It's going to be heavier though, of course, but if they manage the weight well, which some manufacturers have learned to do quite well, it could be that you're not going to notice it that much and in some areas like roll and dive it could mean an improvement. In other words: no idea, just some possible positive hypotheses

@@BinaryBlueBull all good and similar thoughts to mine,, and, I understand that battery tech and Mercedes involvement with leading Chinese battery manufact. will introduce next gen battery with double the power density, Thus I can imagine offering same range but half the weight, or same weight and double the range. There may not be deterrent body roll, but theres still three tons around every corner and ever braking ( although regen. might actually save that part of the flaw ). I also suspect a higher power amg version coming soon, which most likely will have the hydraulic sus. system included. I want that one.

I would buy the G580, but not for its fake sound. It's an EV, so it doesn't need the artificial noise, which is annoying. The quietness is a benefit, allowing me to better appreciate the driving terrain.

I think it is so sad that so many are totally against EV driving…the World has decided that is the future so it is coming and manufacturers have to make cars that appear and feel much the same as the ICE cars of the past 120+ years. It is no better for the World than anything else..all movement takes energy and needs a source of power to make it happen but it always takes exactly the same environmental impact to achieve. Now this car…it is never going to save the the World but it is an excellent EV on its own way. The fake noise is better than the silly wooshes that EV cars had and if it is fake, does it matter? If you have to drive a car that sounds loud and angry to attract women then it is now time to grow up….stop being a jungle stick insect trying to attract a mate. As for the driving…the stupid spinning mode is an engineer being an idiot…and the tyre manufacturers will love you..bald in 500 miles. Otherwise…it is a car to appeal to those who are only driving it for the looks and status…it is not necessary, not intended to be used in any commercial role, it is a fashion accessory but it is still a very attractive car. Now though…you can still wear a gallon of aftershave, spray on the fake tan, grow a face stubble beard and wear a gaudy shirt. I’m not that market but respect the engineering work that has gone into it…running costs?…huge over its lifetime..an expensive decision!🙂🙂🙂

@@timeslowingdownIt is the depreciation costs as the battery ages…you will have seen the catastrophic losses on the Porsche Taycan which is one of the best EV’s on sale…one owner I know paid £121,000 in 2021 for a very nice version and enjoyed 34,000 miles so went to buy another…one dealer just would not take the car from him, one offered £30,000 at first but then finally reduced it to £24000….and he still owes £60,000 on it! The G wagen will be little different in EV form….the first G Klasse to bite you in the wallet and not just at a petrol station! 😬😬

Electrical is not dependable. It’s not reliable just a toy to go back-and-forth 100 miles forward 100 miles back. You definitely not gonna take it off-road and you can never take it across the country. Otherwise you’re gonna be stuck charging it for three hours garbage my opinion stick to the fuel I own for G wagons in my life. I will never purchase electrical one. I want to be free. I wanna know that I can be anywhere anytime anywhere, not to be depending on the electrical chargers electricity don’t like hot weather cold weather so it’s a toy to go to a store to buy groceries and go back.
