If Do Ya is the worst song, it must be a damn good album. It’s a sublime one that’s a favorite of many fans. Sadly, Jeff Lynne’s right hand man, multi-musician extraordinaire, and Rock Hall Of Fame inductee Richard Tandy passed away last week. Rest well, Richard.

"So Fine" is one of the most underappreciated ELO songs. It's quite possibly in my top three favorite ELO songs. It should be way more popular. I wish more KZbinrs would react to it. Thanks Justin for checking out this entire album. I have played the album hundreds of times and never get sick of the songs.

Hi Justin. Dave here, In Old England Town. Thanks for the name-check, and my fave sci-fi film is probably 2001 A Space Odyssey. Fantastic ELO album, and such a successful and imaginative blend of rock and orchestral. I agree with you about Shangri La (and Do Ya for that matter, the Todd connection being that Utopia played a cover live around the same time) and I would also single out the dramatic opener Tightrope. Others have paid tribute to keyboardist Richard Tandy, who left us this week, and I am convinced that, while Jeff Lynne is the master tunesmith, Richard was so influential in developing their unique sound. He's unsung but one of my favourite keyboard players - RIP Richard. P.S. my song ref In Old England Town is from the earlier ELO II album.

I've heard Utopia's cover of "Do Ya" before (done live), which is probably where the Todd Rundgren confusion came into things. To me, "So Fine" is the underrated hero of the album. Everyone knows "Livin' Thing," but "So Fine" is an essential part of the experience.

As mentioned, Do Ya was written by Jeff and originally recorded by ELO’s predecessor, The Move. Todd Rundgren included the song in his live show playlist during the early 1970s, which over time, had people think he wrote the song. Re-recording for A New World Record was Jeff reclaiming the song as his own.

This title, "A New World Record" is a triple entendre. The first two are fairly obvious. The third has to do with the song, Mission, where an alien is told to come down and record a new world in their eyes. Very clever. :)

I like to refer to this album as the baby Out of The Blue! It's in my top 3 faves, with "OotB" being my fave, followed by "Eldorado". As I listened to your comments, I actually REMEMBERED when this album came out and I bought it, and sat down to listen for the first time, that I did not really love "Do Ya" for some reason. But over the years, and with more and more listens, and, especially, after seeing them in concert on the OotB tour, "Do Ya" def has become one of my favorites!! Same with "Rockaria", but to a slightly lesser extent. "Just to hear the opera singers singing rock and roll so pure I thought I saw the mayor there but I wasn't really sure But it's alright"

For a more intellectual watch, 2001 A Space Odyssey. For entertainment, The Empire Strikes Back. Shangri-la is my favourite track. The songs that were singles have lost some of their lustre just because I've heard them so many times, but unfortunately that kind of over exposure happens with music. I like the fact that Justin always goes through the lyrics because that's an aspect that sometimes passes me by, particularly when there's so much going on instrumentally.

I'm not really a person who picks favorites, but since you asked so nicely, and as I loved your analysis of _Mission_ (which is roughly an entire scifi story in one song, and it nearly always brings me to tears}, I'll try: this is not a movie that is very known or popular, but it is a sweet story, and I love the theme melody, Starman (1984), directed by John Carpenter, with Karen Allen and Jeff Bridges. Tron (the original from 1982) is also a great scifi movie, but I don't know if the "programs" can count as aliens. 😊 Another ssdly overlooked movie is 2010 (from 1984), the sequel to 2001. I suppose the monolith can represent aliens, and the soundtrack is just sublime!

SCI FI films you must check out: "ARRIVAL" (an absolute mind-boggling STUNNER of a film... one of my Top 20 films of all-time), "CHILDREN OF MEN" (more of a dystopian tale that is. jaw-dropping in a brilliant, thought-provoking kind of way. The same director helmed the epic space drama "GRAVITY," which is also a must see.). A couple of other FANTASTIC films on the fantasy front: "PLEASANTVILLE" and "STRANGER THAN FICTION"... ... ALL of these films are superb and you will never forget them. (they'd all make great reaction watch-alongs, too!) Cheers!

Oh, at 26:19, you talk sbout the "alien" transition, "from out of nowhere". Jeff seems to have had a typical interest for scifi and space when he was a boy, not surprising as he grew up in the fifties and sixties when spacetravel, rockets, astronauts etc were very hot topics (he would proobably also have watched Doctor Who). On one of his earliest songs with the Idle Race, _I Like My Toys_ , he dreams of going to the stars. And of course the most recent two albums are called Alone In The Universe and From Out Of Nowhere! I sometimes think Jeff could easily be a time-travelling alien, a musical time lord, whose Tardis is disguised, not as a police box, but as a Wurlitzer jukebox... 😂

I will stop now, I promise! But I just want to praise you even more for your analysis of Shangrila. Especially noting the sadness turning into hope - i think this is so characteristic of Jeff's sad songs. Also the Jeff Lynne theme number one: rain! These things must have been "with" him always. With the Idle Race, two songs pop up in my mind immediately: the -very sad - song called _Plesse No More Sad Songs_ and the perfect song for a rainy day, literally or emotionally: _A Better Life (The Weatherman Knows)_ . You shoild probably check out both...I have always found songs like these very cathartic when going through hard times, precisely because they are beautiful, and contain a seed of hope. ❤

The fact that it's actually the only song on the album that is an older song (originally done by Lynne while in the group The Move) is interesting. I love early ELO. First time I heard them was when I was 19, and I came home to my roommate listening to something on headphones as he always did. He came over to me and put the headphones on me, and the first song on El Dorado was playing. I was like holy c*ap! Whatever this is I love it. I didn't give the headphones back and just listened to the rest of the album without stopping. This was many years after it came out, more than a decade, actually. So, I had to go and devour everything they did. Massive ELO fan. I would go so far as to say El Dorado is my favorite album of their, but then I would have to say it likely depends on what I'm listening to at the moment. :)

Wow, do we disagree about this one. "Shangri La" is fine, but it's clearly the token ballad that JL came up with just because every album needs at least one. By contrast "Do Ya" is all killer, no filler. It was a staple on FM radio for years, and held a similar place as McCartney rockers like "Jet" and "Helen Wheels". I do like this album, although it's hard for me to see Jeff Lynne as anything more than the world's biggest Beatles devotee. He even name checks Beatles songs fer crissakes.

I'm one of those who recommended A New World Record to you, but I have to say that I haven't really listened to ELO for some time now, probably because I've had my fill of this orchestral pop in the past. It's probably their best album (although Out of the Blue isn't far off, but I find the latter more indigestible in the long run). In short, for me ELO's music has become a bit off-putting over the years, and if I'm in the mood for some slick pop, I'll always go back to the Beatles above all else!

'Ole Audiophile: Batteries Not Included (Steven Speilburg). You know, I believe ELO did music in an early movie about A.I. (Electric Dreams), a musical based loosely on greek mythology (Xanadu) and devoted an entire album to time travel (Time) but I can't think of any meaningful sci-fi ELO contributed to. Anyone?

It was billed as Jeff Lynn solo but I believe Richard Tandy was involved with the two tracks he did for Electric Dreams, "Video" is an interesting bop, "Let it Run" is more a straight ahead rocker. The whole album is rather good.

You have one of the greatest Sci Fi openings of all time to an ELO tune (Mr. Blue Sky) with "Guardians of the Galaxy 2..." No, it wasn't composed FOR the movie, but it was BRILLIANTLY used in the movie! kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3faqmhtbqyXb5I&pp

@@keithbk I thought I remembered something, I am a Marvel fan. No.2 I believe I breezed through. Thanx for remembering though, it's why I queried. (I've always gotten a chuckle out of how Marvel implements Led Zeppelin so effectively. They wield it like a heavy baseball bat)
