David Konen; Bruce was the first name of one of the members of ELO. So they changed it to Bruce to fix any confusion in the lyrics as no one knew what word was being said there.

In a interview the band did say that that it is Bruce as they were in Australia and they met a few people named Bruce so they changed it to Bruce while they were in Australia and New Zealand and it just stuck
