I really like the design of the deck. The direct drive blades are very quiet compared to the conversions that keep the belt drive. And I think the power cord to accompany it is nothing short of genius. I hope you believe immitation is the highest form of flattery because I'm going to copy your design for the deck. I'm really impressed with it. You did a great job.

Absolutely Amazing! Job well done. 100% I will copy this idea next year, my mower guy always has tractors with blown engines, just need to find one with a nice body, frame & deck. Love every aspect of your build, very professional, I see alot of business potential for doing conversions, think of the noise problem that is solved. A quiet mower, every mans dream! 👍😎

The 50amp stove cable P.T.O. is cheap and works great for the electric 42" cutting deck it can also be used for other attachments such as a snow blower, sweeper, plug an a 120vac inverter for your power tools, fridge, freezer, gas or oil furnace, water pump in the event of a power failure, charge with solar panels and use the batteries for your barn lighting when not cutting grass. The P.T.O. plug eliminates all the belts and pulleys on a conventional gas tractor We now sell a conversion "KIT" details:- electrictractor.net Brian

Brilliant idea, well executed. Giving serious consideration of buying one of your kits for my old Craftsman. By the way, I found you while searching for conversion kits for a larger Kubota tractor. My B3350 has a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Tier 4 pollution control that is starting to act up again. If you're up to a challenge, build me a kit so I can swap out that stinky diesel engine. Again, well done!

Thank you for the video, even if you did use some strange words 'gas' & 'dollar' :) I can see a potential problem though. With belt drive if the blades hit a large stone, half brick etc. the belt will slip but with direct motor drive it can't. Maybe consider a lightweight version of topper blades where the articulated blades can swing back if it hits anything.
@ElectricTractor3 жыл бұрын
Hi Cyng Some gas engine tractors use gear and shaft drive, they protect the blade driveline with sheer pins or soft keys in the keyways, in our case because the electric cutter motors are much less HP than say a 22HP gas engine with a flywheel they have less inertia and stop much easier without doing damage, but we do also use blade tips that swivel,

This is awesome, I will be buying the plans if I can manage to find a scrap lawn tractor somewhere. I was just wondering if there was a battery guage that could be installed like many of the battery tools/tractors now to give you an idea of how much power you got left? Didn't see that in the video and not sure if its feesable.

Dear sir Thank you, I am having problems setting up my website videos etc, what problem was you having? I will look into it, My conversion is not designed for a 4 wheeler but you may be able to adopt it? it's first job is to cut grass and I am finding it can do allot more
@onenewworldmonkey7 жыл бұрын
I use Mozilla Firefox and they said that your site is not secure and sent me back. So I couldn't get to your site. I would like to learn as much as possible about your conversion so as to modify it for an ATV. I hunt with an ATV. One without a loud gas engine would be extremely advantageous. Also, I'm sick of tearing apart carburetors and all the other crap that breaks down. Scent, believe it or not, can be another advantage (no gasoline or oil). The list of advantages gets bigger. There are a few videos that do the conversion, but, strangely, most are 6 or 7 years old. I emailed a company that made one this year, though. I can tell by just comparing your video to theirs that you are much more "real world" competent. Funny how an older guy like you can be better at technology than them. Way to go.
@onenewworldmonkey7 жыл бұрын
I forgot to mention one more thing. I have an open mind and would consider an ATV that would pull a trailer~and mow my grass. lol. One machine to do everything seems best. I'll bet your mind is working now.

Hey Brian. What motors are you using on the cutting deck? This is the best build I have ever seen. Awesome work!

I'm thinking about doing the same but i will not copy your deck motors. I have seen how it eats the old bearings on the mower blades. I will make a new lower mandrel with bearings and let those bearings take all the the abuse from the blade. This will protect and ensure long life of the electric motors.
@chuckcavan30366 жыл бұрын
I was wondering what type of battery did you used and how many, also what is your mowing time on it.
@ElectricTractor6 жыл бұрын
Hi Chuck I use Lead acid deep cycle batteries are :- cheap, safe, easy to use, completely recyclable,available everywhere, and heavy which is good in a garden tractor for traction and they run my 42" cutter conversion for up to 2hrs cutting grass, about 2 acres, or about 8-10 hrs without cutting, if you think about it 2hrs on a garden tractor is long enough if you have more than about 2 acres you probably need a larger tractor, Lithium batteries would be about 6x the price for the same run time! How do you keep the blades synchronised without any belts?
@ElectricTractor7 жыл бұрын
Jur4x Thats easy see the lower paragraph Choosing the right tractor to convert, you don't need any particular make of tractor just one with the features stated below, the one on the internet is a Poulan mod PR17542ST made by Electrolux, or the Huskvarna mod YTKH1542XPA I have converted both and they are perfect frames, these new would cost about $2600, I used to advertize in my local paper and on KIJIJI I or go to the local lawnmower repair shop they usually have plenty of them waiting to go to the scrapyard, you don,t need to pay any more than about $50-$100, you can repaint them with spray cans, the recommended 18 inch wheels diameter is because of the gear ratio of the transaxle and the limitation of the speed controller 40amps, my tractor on the website has 20 inch wheels but I found that the motor used a little bit more power than the controller could supply but it still works quite acceptably except going up steep hills where the Controller may trip off and I have to reset it sometimes, I would recommend if you use the tractor with 20 inch diameter wheels to purchase a larger controller capable of about 70 A instead of 40 the size of the drive motor is quite adequate for 20" diameter wheels so that's not an issue, The cutter motors are sized for 21" blades e.g. a 42"cutting deck, this is the most popular size of garden tractor sold in the US and Canada, The deck must be of the offset two blade type, one blade is mounted approx 4" ahead of the other blade, the blade tips slightly overlap when viewed from the front, this is to eliminate the small ridge of grass that would be left uncut if the blades were mounted side by side with a small gap so blades do not hit each other! one thing I can tell you is when it is converted you won't be disappointed they are far superior than gas tractors in many ways
@jur4x7 жыл бұрын
Well, that what I mean. Blades are slightly overlaping. And in order for them not to hit each other they are set with about 90° difference. And in order to keep them this way, timing belt (the one with "teeth") is used. But how do you make sure that two individually powered blades are staying away from each other?
@ElectricTractor7 жыл бұрын
The deck must be of the offset two blade type, one blade is mounted approx 4" ahead of the other blade, the blade tips slightly overlap when viewed from the front, not from the top, this is to eliminate the small ridge of grass that would be left uncut if the blades were mounted side by side with a small gap so blades do not hit each other! no cog-belt is required
@jur4x7 жыл бұрын
Oh, I see. Both that I have, are equipped with one of those decks where blades pass the same spot in turns. End if they get out of sync - they start hitting each other. I thought of getting Stiga with 125cm (that's somwhere round 48-50 inches i think) deck, with three blades. Those ones shouldn't overlay either

:/ it looks like the blades cross each others paths, that is not going to work with 2 separate motors, if blades are passing into other blades paths, then without a belt or chain to maintain timing, they will collide...
@ElectricTractor7 жыл бұрын
Most small lawn tractors blades are belt driven, v - belts slip so cannot be used to syncronize the blades! same problem as my 2 separate motors, so we place one blade about 4" ahead of the other and closer to the center line of the tractor, when you look directly from the front of the tractor the blades overlap so no grass is left uncut
@vckiter95384 жыл бұрын
Blades are mounted with about 0.125" clearance between them, they don't need to be synched.

a gasoline engine does not stall if going up a hill
@ElectricTractor7 жыл бұрын
I believe If you overloaded a gas eng say 3 times its rated HP e,g, 10hp eng and you put a load of 30hp it would definitely stall were an electric motor could supply this load for a short while until it overheats, this is done in electric cars where a 30-40 HP electric motor can supply approx 100 HP for short periods e,g, passing, accelerating, etc Brian Edmond
@mottthehoople6937 жыл бұрын
the reality is a dc motor for a given size will out torque most internal combustion engines at low rpm.Like a steam engine which develops it max torque at stall
@crpth17 жыл бұрын
ayp193s small engine repair - For the same "HP" rating an electric motor will definitely not stall as easily as a gas engine, ever. ;-)
@timan20397 жыл бұрын
He still had the assortment of inappropriate batteries installed which is why it appeared to stall, not enough available amps.
@wacho4xj4 жыл бұрын
I know this comment is 3 years old, but if you haven't stalled a gas engine, then you haven't asked it to provide more power then it is capable. However, With a light duty lawn tractor such as what this one originally was, the tires, belt(s), and/or transmission would very likely slip long before the engine would stall.

an electric motor does not out power a briggs or kohler gas engine
@ElectricTractor7 жыл бұрын
Dear sir, You are correct, An horsepower is an horsepower wether developed via a gas eng, a windmill, a steam eng or an electric motor, 1HP = 33,000 ft/ lbs min, of work, One difference is a gas eng only develops its rated HP at a specific RPMs e,g 3200rpms, and they have "O" starting torque, thats why they need a clutch, Some types of elect motors have very high starting torque and can be connected directly to the gearbox, No clutch required, this means the elect motor doesn't waste any energy for idling, very efficient use of battery power! incidentally a piston steam eng develops its max HP at "0" rpms, Another difference is an electric motor can be overloaded approx 3 times its rated HP for short periods, e,g, climbing hills etc, I believe a gas eng would stall under such conditions, Brian Edmond
