Very nice. It's great to see that clean bowing is possible on a 5-string.

All the major German orchestras (such as Berlin Philharmonic) play on 5 string basses, as do some that emulate them such as the excellent Seoul Philharmonic in South Korea. For this piece I like hearing Maria Krykov or Mikyung Sung particularly, though lots of players do it well.

I can hear the air of the room. Makes it hard to hear the bass. I use a Tascam multitrack to record my basses and from line out into a attenuator to mic input on my camera. I load songs onto tracks 7/8 on the Tascam to play along and record.

Sounds great. I have an NXT4. I get a great tone for playing with fingers. I have to turn the tone on the bass down 3/4. However, I can never get a great bow tone. Its loud and harsh for me. What is your secret? Thanks.
@sylvainmeneux72668 жыл бұрын
+Paul ODell thanks a lot! A few things: - EQ. Need to cut mids - Effect. Add a bit of reverb, to get some resonance - Technique. I found that if I bow too close to the frog, the sound is too scratchy. So I only use the last 2 thirds of the bow on the EUB. - Recording. I find that the only way to get a decent sound is to record the sound in the room, rather than DI (horrible) or close mic the amp(not great either). Now that's a problem when recording with the band off course. I've tried destroying the sound on purpose by adding some distortion and it works ok with a close mic. That can be cool also, but not with Schubert :)

Can you describe the difference between the Acoustic upright bass sound and the electric upright bass sound? (And also, if you know about the Baby bass`s)
@sylvainmeneux72666 жыл бұрын
The acoustic bass sound is much deeper and richer. But most of the time, what makes it amazing doesn't come through when you play with a pick up and an amp, unless you have a great sound engineer with you and amazing gear. I remember seeing Renaud Garcia-fons and Dave Holland live, and the sound was perfect. But I never heard amateur players getting a decent acoustic sound when amplified. So in that context, I think the EUB is a valid alternative for contemporary music. It cuts through nicely, with a hybrid sound between a fretless bass and a double bass. No problem with feedback and you can experiment with effect pedals. I don't know about the baby bass, never tried or seen it.

I’m curious what strings you have on that. I have an NS design and the stock strings don’t seem to handle the bow well.

where'd you get the composition from?

Do you mean the music sheet?
@RhondaBranneky2 жыл бұрын
It’s a piece published by Peter’s Edition, for example by Franz Schubert. It’s called the “Arpeggione Sonata”. Nice playing, by the way! This piece is already difficult to play on the cello and the arpeggione is very rare.
@jacobedwards97067 жыл бұрын
This is awesome playing but your right arm seems really ridged and tense. Especially at the wrist. I think that’s where those over tones are coming from in the faster bits.
@sylvainmeneux72667 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jacob, very valid comment and I'm aware of it. The problem I find with the electric is the scratchy sound when bowed. I find that playing with the higher part of the bow makes it easier to get a more constant sound and somehow a better control on the pressure. You can see on the video, I hardly play near the frog at all. That makes the bowing a little awkward. Plus my bow technique is not great to start with :)
