6:26 - I think you meant lead and _tin_ not zinc. I had a hot tub panel fail because whoever soldered the spade connectors used acid based solder. Rotted the wiring all away.

Some excellent advice in this video Jeff! One thing I must mention if you are going to be using a certain electrical wall socket make sure it is wired correctly. I came across a socket that had hot and neutral reversed ! A socket tester available at most hardware stores with three neon bulbs confirmed this. I'm glad I never used that particular outlet for anything other than a TV or computer, both with power transformers.

Excellent video but I must respectively disagree with one of your cautions at 12:35. If you are using an isolation transformer with a hot chassis device, there is no danger in connection of test equipment grounds directly to the chassis. In essence, using an isolation transformer with a hot chassis is no different than a device with a power transformer and a half wave or center-tapped full wave rectifier. In either case part of the secondary winding is tied to ground. Now there is a potential measurement problem with some hot chassis devices. In some cases the chassis was floating DC wise but grounded RF wise through a 0.1uf or so capacitor. In this case you wound want to connect the test gear to the signal ground and not the chassis.

Great advices. I did restore a reel to reel player - as in changing old belts, new cogs on trip counter. But I didn't change any old electronical components. It works very well, even if it is from 1969. I wonder if it is safe to use, or it could cause a fire. Not much knowledge on electrical components. 😮

Excellent and very important information. Prevents magic smoke escaping (which is what makes electronics work!) and nasty bites.

On the 13th of August KZbin turned off email notifications for computer users. There is very little point in being subscribed, if we won't get notified... that stupid little bell on in the KZbin screen isn't going to do it. Every creator, who wants to keep his subscribers, should insist that KZbin brings these notifications back. (and kick the idiot that dreamt up this daft idea out on the street!) Paddy
