I saw this when I was, looking back a bit too young at, three or four years old and being enamoured with it. I think the fact most of it was without dialogue helped young me connect with it a lot. And in retrospect, this along with Wall-E cemented my love of stories told through visuals and character acting alone. Also as a kid I was super frustrated I could never find the 1920s style song Belleville Rendez-Vous that plays in the intro of the film on iTunes or anywhere else. The -M- version is still a bop though.

I'm expecting his overall thoughts on it to be that it's a bit depressing, but still action-packed. Though does anyone miss the days when he would have music from the next Classic Review playing as he gives us the hint and then lets it play on till the post-credit scene? I get that he doesn't want to deal with copyright strikes, but that does help add a bit more spice to the announcement.

I was expecting you to review this darling of an animated film because I absolutely LOVED it as much as I loved One Hundred and One Dalmatians, Cheburashka, The King and the Mockingbird, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, WALL-E and a collective others. I ADORED Madame Souza and especially the triplets because they reminded me of my own grandmother from my mother's side. If Souza would be able to save her grandson from the French Mafia (who are the most frightening villains in fictional history), I certainly don't doubt that my grandmother would save me too. The style is simply wonderful as the backgrounds and many of the characters remind me a lot of how Ronald Searle, especially the design and the sketchy and tangible linework, inspired the Disney artists and animators made the animated films during the 60s and 70s, with a slight exception of The Jungle Book, then in turn influencing other works such as the Professor Layton games and even recently with Lackadaisy. Also, the butler is purely a delight because of his movement and mannerisms which is simply on point. Oh, did I fail to mention that I own Caleb's Cab, a novel that he and his wife published? It is a very good read.

His film honestly deserved the Best Animated Feature win. While Triplets of Belville, may have been great, it didn’t nor has it made as much of an impact as Finding Nemo. Besides, time will continue to validate Finding Nemo’s win anyways, especially as see the latter being recognized by the Library of Congress as “culturally, historically & aesthetically significant” and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry before they ever give the same honor to Triplets of Belville. So I personally feel Andrew shouldn’t feel that bad.

Just watched this film and I really, really like it. I think this is sort of like a lot of Ghibli films in how to write characters with nuance, writing good female characters with as much complexity as male characters are usually afforded. As in, there is no subversion for the sake of it. They wanted to write a film that had elderly female protagonists beating the mafia / secret services, and honestly all of the characters are extremely lovable. I also personally really like less attractive, characture-like characters with a little edge in their design. Its why I loved Howls Moving Castle as a kid. The lack of dialogue definitely improves this film massively and meant the animators were forced to create characters that are full of nuanced visual expressions and storytelling. Also, its everyones goal to find someone who loves them as much as Souza and Bruno love Champion. I especially feel bad for Bruno and Champion for a lot of the film. I think Bruno's design and story is meant to be a criticism of sports and Tour De France, he pushes himself to an absolutely ridiculous extreme in order to cycle, his legs are enormous while the rest of his body looks sickly and frail. He looks half alive and is generally very emotionally mild. I think its also critcising the idea of turning something you love into what you do as a job - a lot of the time it'll destroy you and your passion for it.

Dude, I hope you don't praise The Powerpuff Girls Movie too much like the Cartoon Hero, Isaac the Media Hunter, Erod the Blockbuster, and even the Nostalgia Critic. This movie isn't a masterpiece like Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, or the Spider-Verse movies. It's like a prototypical version of Chicken Little where the young protagonists were mistreated by unpleasant citizens after accidentally destroying their city. And a turning point for Craig McCracken's animation career and the legacy of The Powerpuff Girls. Think about it, we have a childish anime version that has nothing to do with the original, a slightly crappy CGI special, and don't get me started on the infamous 2016 reboot or the cancelled CW live-action series.
