I heard some people say that Spellbound is an allegory of parents getting a divorce through the perspective of a kid. And to be honest, the more I think about it, the more it makes the movie look even worse. First off, the way it’s handled it still terribly messy where they only make it clear about it at the very end, making it feel sudden and doesn’t give the viewer the time to register the message before the credits roll. Not to mention how it doesn’t change my criticism on how the film promotes toxic positivity with the way it shows how all conflicts makes you turn into a monster. It feels uncomfortably weird how Ellian concludes the movie with “My problems are solved now that my parents are divorced!” That and it makes Ellian look like a spoiled selfish brat where the movie makes it progressively clear that she wants her parents back for her own royal life back than for her parents’ own well-being. Also, making a movie, especially an animated family film, discussing about divorce is both challenging and delicate in order to get it right. I’d love to see one take on the subject, but Spellbound is a terrible example of this. And the worst thing about it is that not all divorces end with the two people still cool with each other, even when they had a kid prior. Imagine how much Spellbound is such a giant middle finger to the kid watching the end seeing Ellian’s parents separated, but still working together to take care of her, while in their reality, their parents can’t stand being in the same room and would never team up again to be there for them. That just says to them that divorced parents who can set aside their differences for their child is just a Disney-style fairy tale that only exist in movies like Spellbound. Congratulations, you found an extra reason why Spellbound is a terrible movie. Disney may not be in the best shape creatively, but they’re still making better Disney movies than Skydance.
@365ral2 ай бұрын
I get that divorce is more normalized IRL, but we shouldn't make kids expect or aspire that when they grow up. A lot of problems with today's kids IRL stem from broken families. We should aspire for a future where more people value marriage, and more parents stay with their kids, not this selfish mindset of "do whatever feels good."

This is a better movie than Wish by virtue of the fact that it actually has a moral. There is no point to Wish.

I almost did a spit-take when he called Wish "a genuine effort"
@gamestation2690Ай бұрын
I think Wish DOES have a moral, but maybe it's more subtle than some other Disney movies. For me, it’s about self-belief and taking action to make your dreams come true. Asha shows that wishes aren’t just about hoping-they’re about standing up for what’s right and working with others to make things happen. It also highlights the courage to challenge unfair authority, like when Asha stands up to King Magnifico. Those are some pretty powerful lessons if you ask me!
@audjusushiАй бұрын
@gamestation2690 I'm sorry, but I respectfully disagree. There isn't any actual oppression happening because King Magnifico is such a badly written and conceived antagonist. Everyone knows he only grants one wish a month so any adult would know their wish probably won't be granted in their lifetime. And why would they invite more potential citizens and lower their chances? And the film doesn't have anything to say about wishes other than "they're special" which is as basic writing as you can get. I'm sorry but Wish was much weaker in almost every way when compared to Spellbound.
@gamestation2690Ай бұрын
@@audjusushi I get what you're saying, but I think the simplicity of the writing fits the fairy tale genre. Fairy tales often rely on archetypal characters and straightforward morals to make their messages timeless and accessible. Sure, "wishes are special" might sound basic, but isn’t that the point? It’s a story for all ages, meant to remind us of hope, self-belief, and the importance of taking action. Sometimes the simplest messages are the ones that stick with us the longest. And as for King Magnifico, he works as a symbolic antagonist-a representation of selfishness and control, which contrasts Asha’s selflessness and determination. That might not be "complex," but it’s effective for this kind of story.
@juanpablorobayo9891Ай бұрын
@@gamestation2690 yes, they rely on archetypes, but you can SEE them being bad from the get go. Scar is an evil ruler, he schemes from the start and then becomes such a bad guy when he's king that all of nature starts to die. Ursula is a temptress witch, absolutely sells that from the moment we see her. The evil witch from Snow White is vain, vanomous, and so hateful, it is easy to understand. But magnifico is not evil at the start. His mentality for keeping wishes locked up is because some shouldn't be granted. That's not wrong! What if I wished to marry a princess...who is already married to someone and she's happy? What if I wanted to be king...of a kingdom who already has a king? What if I wish to be able to make other people feel how I want them to feel at any given moment? The issue with magnifico is that he becomes evil because he stops being strong and opens a book of dark magic which corrupts him. There's no clear archetype for that--that's a subversion. and the subverison is done very poorly. if the movie wanted to be about strength of character, they could've shown that, but it comes out of left field. He isn't allowed to actually be evil, so his evil deeds seem ham-fisted and awkward. Asha is right not because she's a good person deep down, but because Magnifico screws up so badly that she is right by consequence of this. Asha was *wrong* to get mad at him for that. "I wish for more for us than this"--this what, exactly? A clean kingdom with pretty flowers where people dont get charged rent? Wish's princess deserved a real bad guy to go up against, to make her songs and her desires have real weight and real attraction. Magnifico being good-but-corrupted absolutely spoils Asha's motivations. And NGL, we get into racism territory here because the audience is like "See? black women just want to ruin perfectly good societies built by white men". Its such a bad plot that it has some people online theorizing that its actually some sort of psy-op to make disney recoil from diverse movies.

As a parent of three kids (ages 5-9) - the actual target audience for this movie - I wanted to share their genuine reactions. They absolutely loved it! The humour landed perfectly, the visuals captivated them, and even my 5-year-old could follow the story easily (unlike Wicked, which was too long and complex for that age). What really struck me was that they spontaneously declared it better than Wish and asked to watch it again - something they've never done with Wish. They excitedly spotted connections to other animated films like Onward and Raya. While they noticed its Disney-like qualities, they saw this as comforting rather than derivative. Most importantly, they weren't concerned with the criticisms raised in this video - the studio behind it, adult-oriented humour, or industry politics. For them, it was simply a thoroughly enjoyable movie that hit all the right notes for its intended audience.

I tend to think of stuff as not excuses I think of the fact that people like different things and shouldn’t be put down for not liking something. Now that saying what I’m trying to say. (I love watching reviews just to see other people’s views not to shit on them.) I reallly prefer to just say (not to be a dick) if you don’t like something that’s ok and it feels like a lot of people bicker too much on how good something is specifically to them and go back and fourth between people who go against them…. When people can just move on and enjoy what they like and dislike what they like and give some constructive feedback without being pummeled for it. Reviews are not here to be bad. Opinions are not here to be bad. I feel like people need to corral themselves and if they watch something and don’t like it they are allowed to share what they don’t like, but then there people who have to counter them and smother each other becoming just as monsters in this story. I guess what I’m saying you don’t have to like or dislike something specific and you you can give feedback but bickering back and fourth seems so …. I don’t know …. Unecessary. Especially since most things people bicker about is good or bad for ages when to be honest age has criteria for certain things for obvious things(can’t show child certain things). But other than that, good or bad really doesn’t matter I just feel bad for people who are devoting their lives to bicker with each other on why their points are the best. Some opinions really are not worth stressing over or even sometimes people loosing people they love over whether something that is not of intense thoughts and need to cause intense dispute. Fights and disputes are ok but driving it overboard seems to fuck up people more.

But I think that their marriege being bad was supposed to be a plot twist. Besides, we basically only see good flashbacks of the parents when they're interacting with their daughter, wich they both love. Their constant fighting is hinted through the movie, not rubbef in your face. We can see them fighting constantly as monsters, we can see them fighting over how they should raise their child ( before remembering they were their child ), and theb, we finally see what it's like when they're alone, wich is constant fighting. During the first musical, we can actually see scenes of them getting annoyed by each other (The scene of the dinner, p for exemple, we see the mom monster getting annoyed when the dad monster eats all the food). They don't even share cells, wich at first I thought it was strange, but if you watch the movie, you realize it's because they can't stay at the same cell without fighting. They only stop fighting when along with their daughter, wich is seem in their monster forms AND human forms. They both put the fight aside for the sake of their child happiness, as shown by them, as monsters, stopping the roar fight because they saw their child was in danger.

I understand what you mean, though I have an idea of how to make the aspect of the parents quickly becoming monsters not so bad. How about instead we open the film with Ellian as a little girl with her parents reading her a bedtime story that foreshadows the message and a bit of what the movie has to offer, while also showing that they love her very much. But at the same time, have the parents do a little argument so the audience isn't thrown off by the idea that they tend to argue with each other. Then let the movie flow as is.
@AnciaOfficialАй бұрын
If I understand your comment right, I think the reason behind this is that Ellian was embarassed of her parents turning into monters, because of their constant fighting. Captain of the guard seemed to be important in the kingdom, so a second reason could be that Ellian thought if she found out, her parents could lose their titles as King and Queen, or get killed (because after all they were monsters). this is from the company from John Lassetter, Skydance Animation, not Disney. Skydance Animation was founded by Lasseter after he got expelled from Disney for being a creep. Because of the situation, he knew he had to get to his imperialism the easy way so he chose Spain, because Spain has no laws regarding salaries within international companies established in the territory he can deliver minimum wage to seniors. This is the result. For the record, i tried applying to Skydance as a 3d modeler and render wrangler multiple times, but I was told no, because reasons. Turns out I am actually overqualified and they search for mid tier artists to perform within the studio for minimum wage, since their delivery quality is low. Hence why you don't see complaints about exploitation or underpayment.

A gripe I had with this movie that wasn't mentioned in this video was the ending.. They pulled this whole "quarreling lovers" thing straight out of this asses since we knew next to nothing about the parents prior to being changed into monsters. And before anyone goes "well they were fighting through the entire movie", I personally read that as... THEY'RE LITERAL MONSTERS, OF COURSE THEY'RE FIGHTING. That shouldn't be foreshadowing that their marriage and relationship is troubled if the movie is also telling us that the parents are _not_ acting like themselves throughout a solid chunk of the movie, DUE to being monsters. They also kinda paint divorce in this shiny, golden wrapping that I feel can be unhealthy or even dangerous to a young audience, and even young married couples. It basically says.. if you fight and argue, separate/divorce! And it implies to kids "your parents can divorce and still be happy like this. If yours aren't, then something may be wrong" and when there's something wrong that they can't explain or understand, a kid may blame themselves for the problem..
@TheSpiderInUrWallsАй бұрын
Yeah… they could easily have showed the parents transforming at the start during a particularly bad fight, after several other disagreements to set the scene.

@rosverlegaspo6752Ай бұрын
@sunstar-r7e If that is what Disney is doing... But that is not what they are actually doing. Like, can you really say that their live action remakes are experiments? That the incoming barrage of sequels are experiments? Or would you call it Disney just doing what they are doing over and over again? Disney isn't experimenting. They are in a creative rut. They are just doing what they have done before. Some would say that Wish animation is unique... But what Wish is actually doing was riding on the stylistic trend that was popularized by Spiderverse, and it was kinda half baked at that. Wish animation is a compromise between typical Disney 3D and the stylization that is catching on. The actual result looks like it was just a typical Disney 3D animation with a filter put on top. And even that minimal attempt at changing their style, they don't seem to be intent or interested in doing it again. They are back to their 3D style that they have been using for decades now. If you want Wish animation style done well, i.e. 3D animation imitating the traditional 2D medium, then you could look at Disney's earlier attempt with Paperman. Yeah, a short they did more than a decade ago did it better than after the technological advancement since then that they had with Wish. That should tell you how stagnant and complacent Disney is with their animation output, if the seemingly endless barrage of live action remakes and sequels didn't already tell you that.

One thing I've not seen people mention yet, is that it is a TERRIBLE idea for a film with a theme of dysfunctional parents, to portray the CHILD as the one who has to fix it. Children should NEVER be the one who has to "solve" their parents' issues. Not even when they're older. That's something that very easily ruins the life of the child, by giving them far too much emotional responsibility. Why couldn't it be that they hired someone to """fix""" the parents' issues?? It could make a decent analogy for seeing a psychologist or something. Literally ANYTHING but dumping *ALL* of the responsibility on the kid????
@juliapruitt1662Ай бұрын
I thought that was the point. She wasn't supposed to be the one that fixed it. It was literally turning her into a monster too. I think it's a solid way of showing how much damage a divorce can do when the parents don't consider the kid stuck in the middle. The way I saw it, they didn't stop being monsters until they stopped focusing on how much they wanted to be apart and focused on helping their daughter. It's actually pretty solid storytelling... like there are good and bad ways to get divorced and they managed to portray both of them through the eyes of the child in that situation. Like the oracles said she isn't supposed to be the one fixing the situation they are.

Poppy is such a immature, selfish jerk who thinks spreading toxic positivity would solve their problems and where she ends up destroying all the music strings of the tribes rather than pulling them out of the guitar, making herself and all of the trolls remaining grey and plain, without any music going through to the point where Barb rightfully called her out for this. I was honestly surprised by the 4.5/10 rating. I was expecting a 4/10.

What’s next, is PooKoo going to rip off Zootopia? Cuz that’s the next Skydance Animation movie
@danielgudinojuarez67292 ай бұрын
Yeah, PooKoo might either be a Zootopia knockoff or at worse, a Nimona wannabe

It was produced with John Lassiter but the director is Vicky Jenson. In fact he only did additional literary materials in the production apartment

9:25 - 10:16 Is it just me why do her parents' monster forms and the other animal creatures remind me of reject character models from DreamWorks the Croods?! The father's design looks more like a giant purple 💜, pangolin bear 🐻 hybrid, the mother design looks like some giant bug 🐛/ goat horned reptile like creature or do the winged big cats remind me of Chunky the Macawnivore from the Croods but with griffin like wings 🪽? You know, giant, colorful, exotic, hybridization animal creatures? Am I the only one getting some Croods vibes in here?!

I really wanted to like this movie since it was scored by the legendary Alan Menken and the plot sounded promising. Instead, it just proved how far the mighty have fallen.

It was Rushed because of Netflix of course they're always rushing either their movies or their TV shows search force people won't find it enjoyable

When you have an animated film this year turns out to be worse than Wish, that’s pretty bad.

They could’ve tell the backstory first and THEN start the movie, like in shrek before starting the movie they explain the backstory of the main plot like a narrator telling a story and then they start the movie without problems

Why do people hate this movie so much? I liked it when i first watched it. Saying it's worse than wish is a huge stretch. It feels like this video is just talking about Lasseter and not the movie itself.
@jamespoders4741Ай бұрын
Thank you so much! Somebody had to say it!! The movie is good of course the animation isn't going to be complex or extremely good with catchy rent-free songs like millions and millions of dollars like Disney that's now wasting with worst horrible remakes but in the end Netflix was basically saying anyone can make a good better musical movie then Disney now if they really tried to but that's only because Disney is either making horrible remakes movies or not making anything new right now in the present until they get their senses smacked right back in place and make more better new movies or TV shows

Huh, if I had a nickel for every time Jane Fonda has been in a CGI animated movie that failed badly, I'd have two nickels. That's not a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice, right? The other movie she starred in was Ruby Gillman.

Sorry but I have to agree with the critics on "Wish". A corporate Disney cheeseburger that reeks of desperation.
@DisneyGirl20042 ай бұрын
@@dansiciliano4506 uuh no offense but the critics are wrong as always, seriously you agreeing with the people that praised cuties and shat on the Mario movie for the same "flaws" Wish has. Same for FNAF. I wonder why we never had a critic vs Audience debate for Disney like we did with Atlantis The Lost Empire. Wish already has its fans thanks to its successful streaming numbers and will likely become a cult classic in the future.

The biggest reason why I'm turned off from seeing this film is because of how the marketing campaign behind this film comes across as slimy, like they don't outright name drop John Lasseter BECAUSE they know very well he's a controversial figure and for a very good reason...the fact that he still makes kid's movies even when the general public knows he's a womanizing pig who was rightfully exiled from Disney gives me a bad taste in my mouth. Judging by the reviews for this movie, yeah, I ain't missing out on much.
