There's nothing wrong with cartoony animation. It's fun, vibrate and creative when done with structure. I just wish studios and the general public didn't make cartoony animation synonymous with mind-numbing kid crap.

I dunno. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 1 had passable animation in my opinion, but Cloudy 2 was fucking over-exaggerated. The same situation is with Hotel Transylvania, but the over-exaggerated animation is in all the sequels.

Personally the only thing that's good about the more cartoony animated films recently are the character designs. I HATE it when computer animated films (plus live action/animated films) try to make the characters look more realistic because they'll often make them very hideous to the point that I'm not invested by the plot due to being distracted by their ugly designs. I'm not saying every animated film should have the more cartoony look. I feel like the majority of them should be like Disney, Pixar and even Illuminations where it's a good mixture of realistic and cartoony.

Matt's point is that a movie animated movies can be good if they have a good script and treat it with respect, he hates cartoony movies because there's a clear disregard for telling a story and are more concerned in cramming as many celebrities, pop songs, gags and refferences than telling a story. Emperor's New Groove is one of his favorite films because it balances the whacky over the top animation with a good story and characters.

Animation is a medium not a genre because "it focuses on story-telling more" or whatever bs. Animated movies can become all sorts of genres whether it be comedy, fantasy etc. If a movie wants to have a decent script and be a comedic-fest or zany as hell then let it be as long as it succeeds in doing that.

This is not fair to DreamWorks Animation. After all, the Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon series, and individual filim like Mr. Peabody & Sherman and The Croods were widely hailed for their writing and graphic styles. Furthermore, DA has already trumped Disney/PIxar before; remember when Pixar threw away its artistic reputation in 2011with that piece of toyetic garbage called Cars 2? In the same year, DA released the widely hailed Kung Fu Panda 2 and Puss in Boots, each with a cartoony visual style, the latter of which outgrossed Cars 2 worldwide and both were Oscar nominated for Best Animated Feature while Cars 2 was shut out.

DreamWorks USED to make great work, but now I think they're starting to become as lower tier as Blue Sky, Warner Bros and Sony (before Spider-Verse) ever since Comcast bought them. Also, Cars 2 may have broken Pixar's creative winning streak a little, but they still managed to recover after.

I have to admit that my biggest disagreement with Mat regards the character designs and animation in the Hotel Transylvania films. I actually really like it, as I feel it makes good use of poses with distinct silouettes, line of action, etc., and the designs (by people like Craig Kellman and Paul Ruddish I think) are appealing to me. I'll admit that everything about those films are a mixed bag, granted, but I think he's too hard in their visuals. I've wanted to get that off my chest for a while.

I think this is actually a legitimate argument. This explains why movies like Finding Nemo, Despicable Me, and Shrek still hold up. We remember them for the jokes they bring, but since it isn't JUST a comedy, there's more there to go back to and reminisce with nostalgia. But if the movie is just a comedy, it will quickly be forgotten. Reason being: You'll eventually grow out of the jokes that are as dated as the movie is. (A good example is Shark Tale). The over-saturation of these kinds of movies nowadays is because studios know it will make them money anyways. (Again, look at Shark Tale's box office success). None of them try anything new since they aren't willing to take risks, which I believe is a result of their own incompetence with taking risks. This is how Disney/Pixar usually succeeds. A joke only lasts a few months maximum. A movie lasts a lifetime.

***** Besides the Despicable Me movies, Illumination hasn't much to define itself. I mean, the visual style looks nice but I'm not seeing it's essence yet. Methinks Animat is a little biased for it. But it's interesting how they're taking the animation industry by storm by releasing two films this year. It's gaining popularity despite competing against so many studios. Pixar was a pioneer in computer animated films, so its reputation soared first on the animation but eventually on the story as well.

Hop and Lorax are NOT even at the rating standards of a cartoony animated film. Despicable Me and its sequel are good ones but I really hate Minions. FYI, Secret Life of Pets is good, but in my opinion Trolls is better. Animat is just not a fan of Trolls and heck he didn't even put Trolls' RT rating on because it is certified fresh which is against his opinions! Yes I agree the fact that he shouldn't overrate Illumination and also he is underrating DreamWorks even though I don't feel like I will like Sing or The Boss Baby near the level of How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, Tangled, Frozen and Moana (I don't like Zootopia as I simply do NOT understand why its story is THAT good and I don't feel the amount of heart the others gave me)

You said it so beautifully. It's about the quality and not the quantity. The reason why certain studios have the reputation they do is because they have consistently earned the audiences trust and faith regarding the quality of their movies, and is why they have longevity. Kids are not as stupid as people think they are, and even they have taste. People complain about the popularity of Disney and Pixar, but refuse to see why? Have they looked at the other studios? It's no shock. One of my favourite videos of yours Animat.

Sometimes I find that if the first animated movie was a cartoony movie, then it would fail. Walt Disney strived for realism in every aspect of the animation of Snow White because the critics to the idea of a theatrical animated film believed that nobody could sit through a feature-length cartoon, and the possibility that a feature film with nothing but bright-colored animation would cause eye problems.

There's one problem Matt as long as the Despicable Me films keep making money we will never see the end of Cartoony films which should die already, and it will get worse when Universal buys off DreamWorks Animation. Think about it, ever since the late 90's DreamWorks started this trend of animated films integrating pop culture refferences and slang and since DreamWorks were making more money than Disney up until the 2010's and Pixar was the Enemy to DreamWorks every single animation studio has been copying DreamWorks and now theyre a shadow of their former self, we can only trust in Disney and Pixar, the only films of any worth from DreamWorks are How to Train your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda.

I like the stylized CGI used for The Peanuts Movie and The SpongeBob Movie Sponge on the Run. If Phineas and Ferb ever come to the big screen, that's how they should do it. If I did a theaterical film based on a 2D kids show (perhaps my own), I'd wanna do that or at least keep the TV show's voice cast. If people want celebrities in the movie, why not just create new characters for them to voice instead of replacing the original voice cast with them. For Curse of the Were rabbit, DreamWorks wanted to Wallace to be voiced by a celebrity in order for the movie to appeal to American audiences but Aardman hired celebs as new characters and convinced DreamWorks to let Peter Sallis reprise his role as Wallace.

Yeah, you have a point there AniMat, I'm glad that I'm not the only one who noticed that animated films have become a lot more cartoonish. I miss the animated movies that are serious and gritty. I watched a few clips of Ice Age 5 on KZbin and the series has gotten over the top cartoony, it's ridiculous. And I watched a clip of Storks; when the main characters were running from a pack of wolves, one of the weirdest things I've ever saw in animated(or cartoon) movies was the wolves making themselves into one huge boat and a submarine, I was like What the heck? Why can't more animated movies be like the Lion King or Disney's version of the Hunchback of Norte Dame?

I'm not a fan of cartoony movies, but I do say they should exist. They can be fun distractions or a way to cheer up during a bad day. I do, however, want to see more realistic cartoons along with them. And I really want to see some that are not primarily comedy. There is a lot that can be done with animation, and I hope people try to utilize that potential soon.

@@isabeld.paredes4923 Possibly because there isn't that much of an audience for dramatic cartoons in the West. Along with so many believing cartoons are kids only. Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like even calling stuff like Norm of the North or Ice Age "cartoony" is an insult to cartoons. Even stuff like Loony Tunes shorts had some form of a story, even if it's a simple one. I feel like The Emperor's New Groove is definitely an animated comedy, but I wouldn't not also call it a cartoon (ha, double negative). There's a story there, but it's not a grand sweeping emotional one like most Disney or Pixar films. The story in Emperor's New Grovoe most certainly takes a backseat to the comedy, and there's nothing wrong with that, it's even my favorite Disney movie. The characters are what even makes the classic cartoons work, think Bugs Bunny or Mickey Mouse, so movies like Norm of the North aren't even really cartoony movies so much as... cobbled together messes. Emperor's New Groove however has all the elements of a classic cartoon, from zany slapstick and non sequitirs, to hilarious characters, to blatant anachronisms, with just enough story and emotional depth to justify its feature length.

In theory, since the emphasis is on the gags and animation, the filmmakers should keep the story and characters simple and easy to follow (reminds me of what you said when reviewing The Thief and the Cobbler - the Recobbled Cut). If these guys wanted to be cartoons and decided to study the craft, they'd notice that Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, and Pete all have simple desires and the plot revolves around a simple goal (setting up a picnic, moving out of the house, performing a circus act, etc). Is there an example of a "cartoony movie" done correctly?

James Vixen Yeah. At least animated shows on TV have more verity like The Simpsons, Ben 10: Alien Force, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Codename Kids Next Door, Looney Tunes, Ed Edd n Eddy, Johnny Bravo. ect. At least the cartoons that air on TV have more verity because not every cartoon is a cheep CGI comedy that focuses more on the gags being over the top and hip to the kids. Shows like Avatar The Last Airbender and Ben 10 Alien Force, they're both action show with animation influenced by anime one being super natural and mystic and one being science fiction, Batman The Animated Series has a different art style and animation and has elements of the wacky 1960s Batman TV series and elements of the dark and edgy Tim Burton Movies and Christopher Nolan Batman Trilogy. I watch cartoons. I just don't as many animated movies in theaters as I used to because of how most of them are repetitive while the cartoons on TV have more verity.

Um, I think you are forgetting the fact that pure comedies exist in live action too, and while plenty try to tell a good story in the process, others simply have the goal of making you laugh, just like these "cartoony" movies. Its not exactly a new trend, and those kinds of movies aren't automatically bad for trying to just be funny. Not every movie needs to be Disney.

There are even movies from people who intend to release their films for a theatrical release, but their quality and/or budget is too low to even meet that standard. Case-in-point: Winx Club: The Mystery of the Abyss. The budget for that movie is about €12 Million and it’s quality is so poor, it could be compared to video game graphics, and it’s trying to make the Winx look more human with their skin or faces, but not only do they still look cheap and ugly, but everything else becomes minimal with the textures to the point that the models don’t look like legit movie characters and, again, look more like video game sprites reminiscent to Gamecube, Wii, Ps2, or Xbox 360. Kiko doesn’t even have fur like the previous Winx films. What’s worse that it’s not even stylized; in fact, it doesn’t know if it wants to be realistic or stylized. Not only that, but the animation also is recycled from Season 5, depending on preexisting assets or footage, or it’s the exact same CG as the show or worse.

The REAL question to ask here, folks, is extent of scope. How do you make a premise like this hold up for a feature-length running time, the people behind these films were constantly saying, unless you resort to padding. Not just in terms of cartoons, but in other short works. Think the film The Polar Express against the original picture book - the adaptation would likely have worked out better in the form of an half-hour special. Likewise, trying to compromise a story that could better be told as a feature, for a short span of time, can be very difficult to achieve if you are not prepared to compensate. And this is not exactly new either - for as long as the entertainment industry as we know it has been around, while there are many successes they overshadow a lot of instances where people are not sure how to make something work well, leading to a lot of failures. Trusting one's own ingenuity to stand up to challenges like these becomes all the more a big deal.

@SonicXAmy121Gamer
@SonicXAmy121Gamer 7 жыл бұрын
Pepe Trump in America, yes. Quite literally everywhere else, still going strong. All animated movies in America are cg because it's quicker and cheaper to make compared to hand drawn. CG has its place but on an artistic side 2d is needed since certain styles wouldn't work with CG. Like imagine if Mulan was cg instead being drawn, I honestly think it wouldn't look that good at all. This is my opinion here but with Big Hero 6 even though I liked the movie I think that artistically it would have looked amazing if it was drawn with a hybrid of Japanese and American animation styles.

I get what you're trying to say here but remember that as much as we try to convince ourselves they aren't, a lot of animated movies, especially cartoony ones, are marketed to children. Kids aren't looking for deep introspective stories or complex layered characters. They just want to be entertained, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. If a cartoony movie manages to be silly and fun for a kid then it did a fine job regardless of its actual quality because it's meant to be fun for little kids. Not everything has to be timeless and classic.

Kind of weird looking at this from 2021, the cartoony style is still standing strong, Disney is increasingly reviled because of it's business practices, and some companies like Blue Sky are being shut down now that Disney owns Fox. I think it may have something to do with how the average movie goer sees animation in general. A lot of people associate animation as either kid's stuff or family friendly material. In order to be interesting and garner interest a lot of adult animated movies have a lot of humor. Since they won't be taken too seriously by the general populace anyway. It's sort of a pragmatic thing.
