Personally the only thing that's good about the more cartoony animated films recently are the character designs. I HATE it when computer animated films (plus live action/animated films) try to make the characters look more realistic because they'll often make them very hideous to the point that I'm not invested by the plot due to being distracted by their ugly designs. I'm not saying every animated film should have the more cartoony look. I feel like the majority of them should be like Disney, Pixar and even Illuminations where it's a good mixture of realistic and cartoony.

After all, the Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon series, and individual filim like Mr. Peabody & Sherman and The Croods were widely hailed for their writing and graphic styles. Furthermore, DA has already trumped Disney/PIxar before; remember when Pixar threw away its artistic reputation in 2011with that piece of toyetic garbage called Cars 2? In the same year, DA released the widely hailed Kung Fu Panda 2 and Puss in Boots, each with a cartoony visual style, the latter of which outgrossed Cars 2 worldwide and both were Oscar nominated for Best Animated Feature while Cars 2 was shut out.

I think this is actually a legitimate argument. This explains why movies like Finding Nemo, Despicable Me, and Shrek still hold up. We remember them for the jokes they bring, but since it isn't JUST a comedy, there's more there to go back to and reminisce with nostalgia. But if the movie is just a comedy, it will quickly be forgotten. Reason being: You'll eventually grow out of the jokes that are as dated as the movie is. (A good example is Shark Tale). The over-saturation of these kinds of movies nowadays is because studios know it will make them money anyways. (Again, look at Shark Tale's box office success). None of them try anything new since they aren't willing to take risks, which I believe is a result of their own incompetence with taking risks. This is how Disney/Pixar usually succeeds. A joke only lasts a few months maximum. A movie lasts a lifetime.

Sometimes I find that if the first animated movie was a cartoony movie, then it would fail. Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like even calling stuff like Norm of the North or Ice Age "cartoony" is an insult to cartoons. Even stuff like Loony Tunes shorts had some form of a story, even if it's a simple one. I feel like The Emperor's New Groove is definitely an animated comedy, but I wouldn't not also call it a cartoon (ha, double negative). There's a story there, but it's not a grand sweeping emotional one like most Disney or Pixar films. The story in Emperor's New Grovoe most certainly takes a backseat to the comedy, and there's nothing wrong with that, it's even my favorite Disney movie. The characters are what even makes the classic cartoons work, think Bugs Bunny or Mickey Mouse, so movies like Norm of the North aren't even really cartoony movies so much as... cobbled together messes. Emperor's New Groove however has all the elements of a classic cartoon, from zany slapstick and non sequitirs, to hilarious characters, to blatant anachronisms, with just enough story and emotional depth to justify its feature length.

I honestly prefer cartoony movies over other type of Movie types. Iv'e allways preferd it tbh in cartoons aswell. I know we all have diffrent opinions, but this is one thing i Will Never get the hate for
@MrEdwards957 жыл бұрын
In theory, since the emphasis is on the gags and animation, the filmmakers should keep the story and characters simple and easy to follow (reminds me of what you said when reviewing The Thief and the Cobbler - the Recobbled Cut). If these guys wanted to be cartoons and decided to study the craft, they'd notice that Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, and Pete all have simple desires and the plot revolves around a simple goal (setting up a picnic, moving out of the house, performing a circus act, etc). Is there an example of a "cartoony movie" done correctly?
@jonnyboy42898 жыл бұрын
Yep. I gave up watching animated films in theaters, for the most part, religiously years ago for one of these reasons alone, along side with being more focused on more being hip to the kids.
@uncreativeusername83628 жыл бұрын
Well I still watch cartoons. Aren't animation and cartoons are like, the same thing?
@jonnyboy42898 жыл бұрын
James Vixen Yeah. At least animated shows on TV have more verity like The Simpsons, Ben 10: Alien Force, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Codename Kids Next Door, Looney Tunes, Ed Edd n Eddy, Johnny Bravo. ect. At least the cartoons that air on TV have more verity because not every cartoon is a cheep CGI comedy that focuses more on the gags being over the top and hip to the kids. Shows like Avatar The Last Airbender and Ben 10 Alien Force, they're both action show with animation influenced by anime one being super natural and mystic and one being science fiction, Batman The Animated Series has a different art style and animation and has elements of the wacky 1960s Batman TV series and elements of the dark and edgy Tim Burton Movies and Christopher Nolan Batman Trilogy. I watch cartoons. I just don't as many animated movies in theaters as I used to because of how most of them are repetitive while the cartoons on TV have more verity.

Um, I think you are forgetting the fact that pure comedies exist in live action too, and while plenty try to tell a good story in the process, others simply have the goal of making you laugh, just like these "cartoony" movies. Its not exactly a new trend, and those kinds of movies aren't automatically bad for trying to just be funny. Not every movie needs to be Disney.
@austinreed73434 жыл бұрын
There’s a difference, though. Animation allows for more extreme cartoony elements than these live action ones. And there’s also a strange tolerance for these cartoony movies as opposed to the oft-panned live action examples. (See “Furry Vengeance”, for example.)

There are even movies from people who intend to release their films for a theatrical release, but their quality and/or budget is too low to even meet that standard. Case-in-point: Winx Club: The Mystery of the Abyss. The budget for that movie is about €12 Million and it’s quality is so poor, it could be compared to video game graphics, and it’s trying to make the Winx look more human with their skin or faces, but not only do they still look cheap and ugly, but everything else becomes minimal with the textures to the point that the models don’t look like legit movie characters and, again, look more like video game sprites reminiscent to Gamecube, Wii, Ps2, or Xbox 360. Kiko doesn’t even have fur like the previous Winx films. What’s worse that it’s not even stylized; in fact, it doesn’t know if it wants to be realistic or stylized. Not only that, but the animation also is recycled from Season 5, depending on preexisting assets or footage, or it’s the exact same CG as the show or worse.
@samuelfarris19496 жыл бұрын
The REAL question to ask here, folks, is extent of scope. How do you make a premise like this hold up for a feature-length running time, the people behind these films were constantly saying, unless you resort to padding. Not just in terms of cartoons, but in other short works. Think the film The Polar Express against the original picture book - the adaptation would likely have worked out better in the form of an half-hour special. Likewise, trying to compromise a story that could better be told as a feature, for a short span of time, can be very difficult to achieve if you are not prepared to compensate. And this is not exactly new either - for as long as the entertainment industry as we know it has been around, while there are many successes they overshadow a lot of instances where people are not sure how to make something work well, leading to a lot of failures. Trusting one's own ingenuity to stand up to challenges like these becomes all the more a big deal.

The next question here is: Are 2-D Animated movies dead?
@SonicXAmy121Gamer7 жыл бұрын
Pepe Trump in America, yes. Quite literally everywhere else, still going strong. All animated movies in America are cg because it's quicker and cheaper to make compared to hand drawn. CG has its place but on an artistic side 2d is needed since certain styles wouldn't work with CG. Like imagine if Mulan was cg instead being drawn, I honestly think it wouldn't look that good at all. This is my opinion here but with Big Hero 6 even though I liked the movie I think that artistically it would have looked amazing if it was drawn with a hybrid of Japanese and American animation styles.

This's the exact reason why I don't even bother to see these cartoony movies. They're really only made for kids and making money honestly, not moving or challenging their audience, and I'd only really see ones that are somewhere in-between, like the Despicable Me movies (not counting Minions because they just went full-cartoon with that), and The Lego Movie. Basically, thank god Disney still exists.
@LeopoldLitchenstein8 жыл бұрын
I think outside of those I can think of Book of Life (somewhat, it's still cartoony but has a pretty fun story), the first Ice Age, both the SpongeBob movies, and The Peanuts Movie

Leopold Litchenstein Oh yeah, I did love The Book of Life, and those are some very good examples...except for the first Spongebob move. Loved it as a kid, but rewatching nowadays...it was definitely the beginning of Spongebob's decline. I did love Sponge Out of Water though.

I get what you're trying to say here but remember that as much as we try to convince ourselves they aren't, a lot of animated movies, especially cartoony ones, are marketed to children. Kids aren't looking for deep introspective stories or complex layered characters. They just want to be entertained, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. If a cartoony movie manages to be silly and fun for a kid then it did a fine job regardless of its actual quality because it's meant to be fun for little kids. Not everything has to be timeless and classic.

Kind of weird looking at this from 2021, the cartoony style is still standing strong, Disney is increasingly reviled because of it's business practices, and some companies like Blue Sky are being shut down now that Disney owns Fox. I still agree that the cartoony style won't be dominant forever, but it will be around forever, since it offers studios the chance at a quick buck.

While there are some films that try to balance between the comedy and the story, like Despicable me (not counting the minion one), most of them just follow the trend of comedy filler, overuse of pop culture reference, cheap gags and predictable story.

Lately I've felt like the entire American animation industry has been in a slump, and not just animated films, but television as well. This is pretty much proof of that. Indeed it is a trend, but I'm just glad Disney is able to pull through when almost all the other studios try too hard to copy each other. Yeah, I really hope this trend ends very soon, it's actually harming the animation industry more than it's doing good to it.

I think it may have something to do with how the average movie goer sees animation in general. A lot of people associate animation as either kid's stuff or family friendly material. In order to be interesting and garner interest a lot of adult animated movies have a lot of humor. Since they won't be taken too seriously by the general populace anyway. It's sort of a pragmatic thing.
