Never gets old watching you guys across the pond! Electric showers seem so weird coming from the US! We do have demand water heaters mostly gas around here but you will find an electric from time to time. Last one I saw was feed with 3 x 30a 240v circuits one 10ga (2.588 mm) run for each stage of the heater. Keep in mind this is a whole home unit not just one shower.

I am a plumber in the UK and always suggest to customers that they choose an electric shower in preference to having a shower supplied by hot water from the boiler. Main reason being that if the boiler breaks down and it's going to be out of service for some days due to getting someone available to fix it or waiting for spare parts, having an electric shower means you even though your heating and hot water supply to the taps (fawcets) is down you still have a hot water st the shower. Especially important if you have a large family and children to keep clean !

I'm enjoying how you do electrical work in the UK. Especially the flexible stranded conductors in the cables. In the US we typically use a 5ma trip rated 120 volt GFCI receptacle to protect people. The 30 ma trip would be to protect wired equipment. The residential voltage supplied by the utility is nominally 120/240 volt with lights and receptacles supplied at 120 volts.

Fixing the cables is to protect fire fighters coming into the building from getting entangled, not people exiting. Nice job. 9.5/10
@ashmanelectricalservices43185 жыл бұрын
I think it's to protect both, if you remember in the 3rd amendment, it was only wiring along escape routes that required supporting from premature collapsing, that was primarily to protect ordinary persons trying to exit the property. The supporting along the entire run is to protect both firefighters and ordinary persons.

Hi, this is my 2nd visit to this installation video and a couple of things sort of jumped out at me. The Consumer unit should have their MCB/RCBO Installed from the Greatest Ampere Sizes nearest the Main Switch to the lowest Amp Rated being the furthest away, large loads need to be fed first and a real bonus is that lighting that dims when these loads are being fed can indicate issues. Placing a 50A breaker near the end is not a good idea. Maybe also another good idea where it is not practical to re-configure the Existing Consumer Unit [short cables maybe] is to install a Separate 4 to 6 way Consumer Unit wired direct via a pair of 100A iscol links, Next to the Origianal Board, to then install a Main RCD Switch rated at 30mA/80A and then place a 50A Type B,C or D Series MCB Dependent upon Max Circuit Resistance. Interesting point here is that everyone and their dog selects a Type B Breaker without considering the value of selecting a more suitable one via the Tables in the Wiring Regulations I also noted an extraneous conductive part [Wall to Rafter Metal Tie] next to the Consumer Unit with no earth attached and I doubt that the Garage Doors/Frame had been earthed ! Also omitted was the check to verify if the Bath / sink had been Bonded, bearing in mind this installation appears to be old school regs not having a 2 x Main RCD Split M/C Board affording all circuits with RCD Protection, it needs to comply to the regulations of that time and sure as eggs are eggs this needs checking, also a quick check as to the type and Class of light fitting installed in the Bathroom. @meganjperry94895 жыл бұрын
You may have made an omission by not installing supplementary equipotential bonding to the lighting circuit or an rcbo on the lighting circuit, since it was not covered by an RCBO or RCD in the consumer unit. 18th Edition regulation 701.415.2, in particular 701.415.2 part V states it can be omitted if all final circuit in that location are protected by and RCD. That didn't seem to be the case?

What would happen if you connected up 2 x 10.8kW electric showers on the 100 AMP? and ran them at the same time? Would 2 x 8.5kW be ok as it comes in at 83 amps ? Or is there just no way to have 2 electric showers working in a domestic house? I mean surely that is a problem in any bigish house? Or fit somekind of automatic lockout box that means if one shower is drawing power, the other wont turn on.

CJR ELECTRICAL why say it was a load of balls then? Firefighters have died as a result of being entangled in dropped cables. We now receive specific training in how to free ourselves and my brigade now have insulated wire cutters permanently attached to our breathing apparatus sets. Also, one of the priorities at a house fire is to make your way to the cu to isolate it so not having to deal with a nest of cables is always good. Remember that in a fire you have zero visibility and you have to cut and release yourself blind, it's not easy. Rant over. Love the videos.

Had the manager of my local pub ask me to install a 10.5Kw electric shower he bought, I tried to explain that it can't be done and a power shower would be the answer (gravity hot and cold water) he ain't 'having it (he tells us he has been an engineer most of his working life Haha). 73 Amp (with diversity) that's just the commercial kitchen + pub + external function room + 3 bedroom flat (with electric cooker) Supply is 100a single phase, and he was an engineer, yeah right!
@apartmentswales2 жыл бұрын
Electrical Engineers have test equipment which can monitor Peak Current Consumption over Time, this gives an exact idea of useage, but one should always take onboard change of a Tenant who's needs may be different, but as I have said many times, if Diversity is calculated then 100A will run what appears on paper to be a massive load. The biggest dangers I have seen in the Industry is where Large Cables are Connected to small Cables ie 35mm Tails linked out to 16mm Tails at the Origin, this can and does cause Fires Especially when running large E7 Loadings overnight. @ashmanelectricalservices43185 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure the pipework for the electric shower doesn't need to be supplementary bonded as the pipe is pvc, all he is required to do is fit a 30mA RCD for the circuit he's installed. What the other electrician did or didn't do to the lighting circuit is he's problem.
@travoltasbiplane15515 жыл бұрын
@@ashmanelectricalservices4318 maybe. But my point is that in a special location you can't just treat your circuit in isolation. By bringing a new circuit into the bathroom you have to consider its interaction with the existing installation to ensure additional protection is provided.

Nice job. Shame the plumber's is not as good. I don't like the way that pipe is not supported as it runs up in the cupboard. Just an observation: a 100A BS1362 cutout can run 120A for twenty minutes, so, provided there is no electric hob, one might get away with two 10Kw showers, though you're right to advise against it.

Looking at the pipework in the cupboard, it's feed with 15mm copper, then a 15mm plastic elbow, then what looks like 15mm white plastic pipe, then another 15mm plastic elbow. From this plastic elbow they used 15mm copper pipe through the wall to the shower unit. I would bridge the plastic parts with earth bonding.

Wherever possible showers should always be protected by an RCBO, this is a device that does the job of both an MCB, to provide overload protection and short circuit protection, and an RCD to give Earth Fault protection. ... The RCBO is the better option as this gives overload, short circuit and Earth fault protection.
