Finally, after a few months, here's the review of the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus (SR+) .
The car is what most think it is, the industry leader, but Tesla themselves are letting it down.

Hi, I am not a Tesla expert but I believe I've seen in a video that the glove box being buttonless is by design. Apparently, there is a Valet Mode and when activated it locks out access to the glove box and limits the car's maximum speed. So what seems like a nuisance is probably a potentially useful security feature.

No, in the Model S and X, the glovebox is opened with a physical button to the left of the screen. Security has nothing to do with the lack of a button, it's an electronically opening glovebox and both the physical and virtual buttons just send an open signal. The only reason there's no button is design.
@miyuden4118
@miyuden4118 4 жыл бұрын
@@joj. S and X came before 3 and Y. Probably the idea of that security feature came also after S and X. I have no idea. I would prefere a button as well. And it's not hard to lock that button from working either. It's just another locking function.
@joj.
@joj. 4 жыл бұрын
@@miyuden4118 I don't think you understand. S and X have a physical button to open the glovebox, and the glovebox is locked in valet mode/Robotaxi mode. The button just doesn't open it, same as when the 3/Y is in valet mode. The only reason there's no physical button in 3/Y is that they didn't want to put one in.

There are systems where adjusting the temperature setting "too high(/low)" will make you reach the desired temperature faster. If the temperature sensor is close to the hater, if might switch off early, while the surroundings are still cold. Most temperature regulators ar not designed for rapid changes in setpoint, but to keep a constant temperature. As they get closer to the setpoint, they might sliwly ramp the average output to avoid overshooting. If you have a simple thermostat, with the sensor at a good position, there is probably not much gain by setting the temperature too high. If you gave a regulator, you might experience some gain by lowering the thetpoint when you reach the desired temperature. Other regulators might have this built in, to give maximum output until reaching the setpoint, then switch to keep temperature mode.
@ontopoftheroof
@ontopoftheroof 4 жыл бұрын
I won't tell her she's correct. Approaching the set temperature thermostats generally start to throttle so not to overshoot by too much of a margin but going into a smooth transient oscillation.
@98dizzard
@98dizzard 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know where you two fellas are from, but modulating thermostats have only been available in the UK for a few years, the vast majority of thermostats in the UK are simple on/off affairs. So setting the thermostat higher makes absolutely no difference to how quick the house warms up. Unless some moron put the thermostat directly above a radiator, but I've not seen a mistake that stupid for a long while.
@thorbjrnhellehaven5766
@thorbjrnhellehaven5766 4 жыл бұрын
@@98dizzard it is far from uncommon, to have heaters with built in thermostat, that is usually not a good solution, and can cause early shut off, before ambient temperature has been reached, but sometimes these thermostats don't have temperature scales, only a relative scale. The temperaturecontrol in my car will ramp down fan speed, as it gets closer to the setpoint, long before the interior has reached that temperature. To force full blast it is easier to change temperature setting than charging fanspeed manually. But of course, with a plain on/off thermostat at a propper position there are little to no gain, by changing the setting.
@98dizzard
@98dizzard 4 жыл бұрын
@@thorbjrnhellehaven5766 in the video he is referring to "thermostats", which in the UK would almost exclusively mean central heating thermostats. They are 99% of the time just an on/off switch. Setting a higher temperature would not make the house warm any faster. The heating is already on, and on full. He is not referring to in car climate control. Which we would call "Climate Control".

Its narrower and 10.6m turning circle makes it easier to drive in the UK. The Tesla clearly has advantages for some, including the slightly better performance, handling, and charge network. Its wonderful we now have a choice of such great cars. We have nearly a 1000 members in the e-niro FB UK FB group, who on the whole are incredibly happy.

Mine also is a boot slammer, however for the proximity chimes there appears a speaker icon on the display just below the speed (in the artificial view area), if you touch it you can switch them off. Also, the speed limit sign on the opposite side can be touched to get your cruise control to the GPS/Map current speed (which may or may not be out of date due to the map). Small nuggets learnt through RT(F)M. Great video and a good honest review.

I'll tell you my take of why i'm going for Tesla Model 3, if you're interested (picked up from maaaany other owners, so not quite "my" take): 1) you'll always have a new car, tecnology wise: over the air updates actually improve your car! M3s had two updates that gave more power/range and also maaaany new features 2) only with a tesla you can travel without hassle, thanks to superchargers network (and the navigator who plans the trip for you including accurate suggestions on where to stop and for how long and -if really necessary- what speed to keep to make it there)

I would note that the design of the hood using aluminum is to provide for a proper crumple zone to protect occupants in the case of a front end collision. I also understand the honeycomb structure under that hood is supposed to help if a pedestrian hits the front of the car by preventing them from going through the windshield. So a complaint about how "solid" it feels misses the point of design for safety.

My cars in years past included several new air-cooled VWs, and I was always happy with the build quality with all of them. Also, my latest two Kias have always seemed premo. So, anything with less build quality would make me very unhappy.

I’m right handed and have occasional difficulty operating touch screen with my left hand when driving - plus and minus on AC fan control for instance. Have also concluded it’s easier to set the regenerative braking to lower when on longer motorway journey as any slight easing of accelerator pedal reduces speed reactively and makes maintaining a constant speed that bit more difficult - reset back up for urban use and regain full benefit. Overall ‘mustn’t grumble’ a great drive and my grand kids love it.

I’d really love to drive a Tesla as soon as possible but the lease deals are utter shite because of overcharging due to demand, quality control issues and overall price. The Model 3 should start at £25,000 not £40,000. What happened to Elon’s promise of £35,000? I’m not convinced the factory in Berlin is going to do much for price. Also I can’t afford £1,200 a year insurance (3x the cost for my ICE) even if the leases were affordable. So...looking at the e-2008 or MX30 for my first EV.

Thanks for an honest, comprehensive and informative review. I have been thinking of buying a Tesla 3 for a few months. The performance is bonkers, range more than enough and the value for money pretty remarkable. The things that are making me hesitate are I don't like relying on the touchscreen for everything (I really don't accept a screen is better than a dial for aircon control) and the lack of an instrument cluster. However no other car seems to match it when considering what you get for the money. The launch version of the VW ID3 is almost the same price and I really struggle to think of a good reason to buy the ID3 for pretty much the same price as the Tesla 3, especially given what looks to be a very low rent cabin in the VW (the cheaper entry level ID3 may be a great buy, but not at 40k for the launch car).

Very good review. You will probably need to put the aero wheel covers back on for your long range 242 mile family trip if you want to make it without stopping to charge. "£150 per 10,000 miles of range" - this is why we should all be driving EVs. Why is it so cheap? Because EVs have very few moving parts compared to an internal combustion engine - around 20 versus 2000 in an ICE vehicle.
@spencerwilton5831
@spencerwilton5831 4 жыл бұрын
Martin Woods The costs per mile are not really related to the number of moving parts, they are related to the massive cost difference between cheap rate electricity vs the equivalent energy when contained in petrol or diesel, and the inherent and unavoidable thermal inefficiency of petrol and diesel powered engines.
@SmartMart1658
@SmartMart1658 4 жыл бұрын
@@spencerwilton5831 I disagree. Because ICE vehicles have many more moving parts compared to an EV the cost of servicing is far lower and also the life span of an ICE vehicle will be a lot lower. An ICE vehicle will be at the end of it's life span at 100k - 150k miles because of all those moving parts which will be worn out and too costly to replace. An EV on the other hand should last a lot longer as has been proven by Tesla Taxis in the USA which have run in excess of 400k miles and are still going strong.

The problem is that any EV that is now getting decent range is nearly the price of a model 3 without the premium feel and a lot of the technologies that come with the model 3. In time, will be interested to know about servicing etc - have to use tesla centres? Is there one near you? (know only have to do very infrequently, just interested on UK perspective)
@brunosmith6925
@brunosmith6925 4 жыл бұрын
These cars need almost no servicing. If there are manufacturing faults (as can be the case with any car) then to correct them does not classify as a "service". But as far as "regular servicing" is concerned, this car does not need any. Some owners of original Model-S Tesla's have never taken them for a "service". All they've done is replace worn tyres. The brake pads may never need replacing as the car uses regenerative braking. I hire Model-3 regulary (from Evision) and drive all over the UK. In a recent trip from London to York, I pressed the brake pedal only a handful of times, and very gently - such as when at a complete stop, to prevent the car from nudging forward. So you use the brakes mostly to keep the car still AFTER it has stopped. There is rarely a need to use the brakes to slow down - the regenerative braking does 99% of the stopping for you - no brake pads involved.

@AllanSustainabilityFan
@AllanSustainabilityFan 4 жыл бұрын
The assessment looks at issues as a count but doesn't quantify severity it seems. A couple panel gaps per car to look out for, on average, is basically what it means, measured on equal footing to, say, a motor defect. This would explain why these vehicles have the highest customer satisfaction rating along with these said quirks. Outside such cosmetics the internals are rock solid, they'll last half a million miles easy on the functional side. They indeed do need to address these issues as it's not good for the corporate image, but at least it's easy to adjust them during a service visit at least.

The cost of charging is not really part of a comparison. A BMW 3 series over 5 years would work out roughly the same, if not cheaper. The only real justification to use an EV is to help lower emissions. Until prices come down significantly, and I'm not talking 25k as being "cheap", 25k for a car is out of the reach of 3/4 of the population I would say. EV manufacturers need to be coming out with cars that start at affordable prices that compete directly with fossil fuel cars without huge range compromise, else it's going to take a LONG time for people to covert.....

but still, apart from a reduction in emissions, no real win. It is called "The Tyranny of the Paris Dressmaker" and starting with GM in the 1920's the legacy car maker clowns have been training you and pretty much everyone else to buy new cars based upon the latest styling trends which they create. This is the reason why we have not had better aerodynamics in vehicles although the basic parameters of good aerodynamics have been known since the 1920's. As far as my house is concerned it and the views around it are to die for. You would love it if you seen it. Next time you are at the airport do me a favor and look for that latest new model style passenger jet everyone is raving about. You know, the one with the roof racks, the running boards, and the KC lights. Let me know which airline you won't fly because the styling isn't up to your standards.

I was worried but up to now he hasn't turned into a Fanboy, he was even a little worried about telling me he'd got one as he knows my opinion of Mr Musk and the reason, even if i had the money (which i don't) I'd not be able to to convince myself to buy one (and i think there the best EV so far). What ever the main manufactures produce will always be handicapped by the charging network , while Tesla have the Supercharger network they will always be the go to for people who want to travel any distance.

So enamored was I with your review, I thought I would take a look at the cars in the metal. Unfortunately I can't say I was impressed. Aside from the staff who appear to have gone through some kind of brain washing course, and refuse to accept any of the concerns I pointed out. E.g Model S with door seals coming off the doors, on both sides, Model X which had panels so misaligned, and with gaps so inaccurate, that I was gob smacked how it left the factory!! At least things seem to be better built in the '3', although when I asked why the door rattled when I closed it, the representative told me it's was because as a showroom car a lot of people open and close the doors!! It was to be positive very well equipped, and clearly the Tesla charging network is a great bonus. However, what would stop me from buying the car is the one area which as any owner, I would spend the most time looking at- the cabin, to me the cheapest and nastiest cabin I have sat in since some of the terrible offerings of the 1970s!!! They told me if I wanted a luxury car a Tesla wasn't for me. I had to agree!! G-d help Tesla if anyone else comes up with an equal charging network...

Yes the speedo is no problem - I thought it would be - but honestly it is not a problem. You can use the voice control to turn up/down the temperature - it even works in Danish. Yes the most comparable ICE car is the BMW 3-series. The Model 3 awd versions even more so (but still heavy). Still I am not sure that a comparison to an ICE car is really helpfull. The only thing I can say - try one out - 9 out 10 will want one afterwards.

The looks of Tesla cars is what makes them work so well. When they first came out, any other electric vehicle had ridiculous styling. Even now, some electric vehicles have stupid styling to make it stand out. Tesla? They just make it look like a car with current design aesthetics. I like that. You have to remember, they are not a premium brand. The expense comes from the technology used. People seem to think that because they are expensive it MUST mean they are premium cars. They are not. As for their interiors, I find them too plain and boring. Also... does NO ONE read the manual that comes with their car? Why are so many people struggling with door handles and buttons? Sorry, that's not a design issue, that's a user issue. Read the damn manual.

Panel alignment does seem to be a bit of an issue with Tesla's. As you say if a service centre can fix it, why cant they just "triage" them before they go out. Wonder if its the actual design and/or the US manufacture. Would be interesting to know how they compare with the Chinese made ones, and hopefully the German built ones will be spot on.
