Japan should really only have 3 automakers: Toyota, Honda and the combined automakers brand, otherwise, there's virtually no chance of survival against Chinese brands. Nissan's quality took a huge dive in the early 2000's when they became involved with Renault. Previously their cars were great but they were unprofitable due to a refusal to close factories and stop manufacturing older models - the renault relationship changed that, but also changed the quality of the product. These days, most consumers wont touch Nissan because of their CVT and timing chain issues. Sam keeps reiterating this, but I always thought USA was by far the most indebted country in the world, not Japan??

I had predicted that a Nissan takeover or bankruptcy would have happened by yr end '24. The fact that there is still ~12 months left is shocking.

Nissan is predicted to be failing but Suzuki? Now thats a problem coz they make great affordable cars and cheap maintenance…

Japan has a huge debt, that's true, but this debt is owned by Japanese (they save a lot).

there is an article from yesterday about Nissan/Honda sales being decimated by Chinese cars in various markets...by the way, i dont think its the EVs which are killing japanese car brand sales, but Chinese are selling inexpensive ICE cars taking huge market shares away from japanese cars...

Culprit "BAD CVT transmissions" installed on most Nissan models since 2003, now they are paying the price and go ahead blame JATCO (Japanese Automatic Transmission Company)...Karma!!!

Well, the gloves are off. Many of the traditional brands are now in financial free fall. Germany got it all badly wrong, the UK will be a van builder only. Some smaller euro brands might survive. N.America is really in a bind, you can protect your self with tariffs all you want but, if the manufacturers insist on using the high end handbag business model ie few but, high priced offerings bankruptcy is their future. Meanwhile the used markets will explode. Especially known reliable brands.

This is a bit harsh but if Nissan is really that close to bankruptcy or acquisition, that's really sad. They were a great auto company once upon a time, and (IMHO) still make some great vehicles. The Rogue crossover is one of the top vehicles in its class in the U.S. I don't understand why they don't release the EV-generator version in the U.S.; it might sell pretty well. We have a Leaf that's a really nice, affordable little EV and we love it. Anyway, I hope they pull through this, one way or the other. Probably will have to partner with another big auto maker to survive.

They make great hybrids, they just don’t release it in North America. Look at Nissan e-power

Sandy Munro said incumbent manufacturers are doomed some time ago. It's happening. Looking for a new car after my model x is due back off lease. My local Nissan franchise doesn't have a Aria to test drive, and said they are unlikely to get one any time soon!

Sad for the employees but they declined in quality over the years. Others, including Tesla, have been going up in quality. It’s time to see a few of them go.
