Ah yes, the Quagsire theorem, why BST aren’t everything
@christiancinnabars1402 Жыл бұрын
Abilities do factor in a lot, especially when Clef is given two of the most broken non-signature abilities in Pokemon. That's why it's so sad seeing mons with abilities literally tailor-made for them underperform because their abilities are just not up to par. Castform's ability just changes its typing, and grants it no buffs otherwise (if you can even call the type change a buff; looking at you, Snowy form). Cherrim's ability boosts it's... Attack and Sp. Def, for some reason. Yeah it's meant to be a support mon, probably specifically for Groudon for some reason, but just boost all non-Speed stats at that point. This is the very same generation Clef got Magic Guard, for reference. Cofagrigus is the perfect example of an anti-Clefable. Literally the same BST with super min-maxed stats (although low HP, high defenses, while optimized for Pain Split, does eat into a lot of its BST), a good typing, and a serviceable movepool, but a really wonky ability leaves it trailing far behind once Clef picks up the Fairy typing. Mummy could have done something like increase the mon's defenses if it's a Ghost type, or reduce the mon's offenses if it isn't a Ghost type, but instead it mostly just boils down to an inconvenience the way it works now (especially due to how specific the activation is, and how it activates _after_ Cofa already takes the damage unless it runs Body Press/Knock Off and tries to spread it itself - but again, the effect is mostly an inconvenience that could even backfire in some scenarios). Even something like Cursed Body would probably be a buff for Cofagrigus/Runerigus.

Watching Clefables rise to stardom has been amazing. When we were kids, nobody would even bat an eye at Clefable; but now in 2023, I feel like there is no Pokémon Trainer alive that has been spared from it’s menace and wrath.
@jman2050 Жыл бұрын
You’re underselling gen 4 Clefable quite a bit. It took a long time to be discovered but it’s literally top 4 in the latest viability rankings, above monsters like Skarmory, Metagross, and Heatran of all things. It’s almost certainly the best bulky mon in the tier. This thing wouldn’t even be sniffing UU if not for the tiers being frozen. It really is just Magic Guard being broken.
@henriquepacheco7473 Жыл бұрын

Clefairy is one of those Pokémon that is insanely strong when the opponent uses it, but somehow, when I try to use it, feels more akin to wielding a wet paper towel
@redwings13400 Жыл бұрын
In pokemon, it’s pretty tough to actually ko a defensively statted pokemon with investment and a recovery move. There are three big ways to do it: apply a status like toxic, set up to deal more than 50% with an attack, or just use a strong super effective stab move. So how do you remove this thing? You can’t set up because it might have unaware. You can’t status because it might have magic guard. You can hit hard with super effective stab, but steel and poison are not great offensive types and easily walled by teammates. You can try to take advantage of its subpar offenses, but suddenly it calm minds or just fire blasts your steel type, and that doesnt work anymore either. Every clefable set has its checks and counters, but until you know its ability and moveset, you can’t reliably beat it. If you guess wrong, it’s suddenly gotten a ko or set up on you, and you’re in a losing position. Clef just got everything it needed over the gens, and is a serious menace to beat. Unless you have taunt heatran on your team or a similarly hyper specific clefable counter, you can’t counter this thing reliably with a single pokemon, and that makes it really scary.
