As a pianist for over 20 years now, I love how so many people talk shit on synth/keyboard guitar pedals like they’re cheating or pointless since you could just play keys but in reality the range of new sounds and creative possibilities of using a guitar that produces such sounds opens doors you simply can’t achieve with keys the same way. The point isn’t to replace these instruments w guitar, rather to utilize these sounds In inventive new ways. I’ve used similar pedals as this and am on my way to get a Mel9 after this video lmao

this is completely insane to me ... i've stopped music almost ten years ago, nothing like this was possible, i mean it was but it was super expensive, you needed a midi modified guitar, tons of gear to achieve something like this, and still you couldn't get so close to some of the effect you are doing in this vid! Just like ten years ago i will say this, if you think something is impossible to do, Electro Harmonix will someday do it and do it great! Well done guys and gals , really

6 years ago I almost bought a real mellotron for $2500. My bud told me how he recorded in a studio that had one and just opening the door would throw off the tuning. Then thought the digital version for $1800. Now this is the deal and can use with my guitar or keyboard rig! I'm definitely getting one! Thanks !
@Beringtunes6 жыл бұрын
Something weird about that Mellotron then - it was NOT an open studio door. The most likely thing that could throw off tuning would be a problem in the SMS servo motor system that runs the tape capstan, or maybe even just a dirty pitch control pot. (Eaaasy fix!) The other thing could be a badly adjusted Mellotron keyboard, on which too much pressure was being placed on the tapes and capstan, thereby causing it to "drag" a bit. A properly kept-up instrument shouldn't do that... it's pretty stable, especially if kept in studio conditions. Conceivably, heavy moisture in outside air MAY over time cause a little stickiness on the tapes. A good player should know how to handle most of these scenarios. That being said, as a Mellotron owner myself, the Mel9 is a pretty phenomenal tool in a guitarist's arsenal! I first heard "In the Court of the Crimson King" in 1969, THE song that made me NEED a Mellotron. (Soon followed by Rick Wakeman and Yes, then Genesis & others!) A couple years later, I was in a band that played that song. But a Hammond organ, gorgeous as it was, was no substitute for a real 'Tron. THIS Mel9 pedal would have made it possible, & our audiences would have been even more blown away than they were! I especially loved the parts, yes , at 2:30, where a compressed volume pedal guitar came in under the String chords; then again, the gentle strings swelling behind the acoustic guitar tracks. That's VERY much how I use my Mellotron to this day, but perhaps the Mel9 is a LOT easier out during a public show! My Mellotron has been "retired" from stage life for a long time, mostly because my back argues against it! Mel9 wouldn't even cause a ripple - til people HEAR it! HA! GREAT investment!

Fans of 60's psychedelic sounds, here is a nice piece of advice for all of you: I connected the Mel9 in a loop with my overdrive, reverb and a phaser set on slightly sustain. Then I set the Mel9 on strings preset, and wow. I got the sound for the solo guitar on "I've had too much to dream last night" from the Electric Prunes. In the original record, this effect was created by adding some reverse recorded guitar in the mix (like on many songs on Revolver from the Beatles), but with this EHX beauty and the pedals added as described above, it will be within your reach. How fantastic is that. The Mel9 got me some mindblowing pleasure already, and day by day, you discover new sounds from your favorite vintage rock songs with it. @JohnnyCNote, maybe this answers some of your questions/quests.

I know I am going to sound like a spoilt brat, but I think that many guitarists are with me: EHX, can you PLEASE also produce a keyboard emulator that produces especially harpsichord-like sounds, like the harpsichord, the virginal, spinet and psalterium? At the moment, you can only get those with a big row of different pedals together and the sound still does not produce similar results, so I definitely think there is a market for it, especially regarding musicians like me looking for late 60's/early 70's vintage prog sounds.
