The Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS) for the F-35 Lightning II is an affordable, high-performance, lightweight, multi-function system that provides precision air-to-air and air-to-surface targeting capability. As the first sensor to combine forward-looking infrared and infrared search and track functionality, EOTS enhances F-35 pilots’ situational awareness and allows aircrews to identify areas of interest, perform reconnaissance and precisely deliver laser and GPS-guided weapons.

On the initial testbed, it was already tracking rocket launches, booster separations, and low earth orbit of the satellite payload. Operational pilots report looking up and seen low earth orbit satellite tracks. EOTS is integrated with the DAS, AESA Radar, and the distributed RF sensor suite, so the pilot doesn’t know or care what sensors are initially detecting, tracking, and PID’ing targets, just that they are. Totally different approach than legacy fighters.

@@bonkboytf2 current batches are actually averaging as low as $85,000,000 per aircraft, but it depends on what package each country wants. That price is less that competing 4.5 generation aircraft like the Eurofighter, and encompasses the entire cost of the aircraft over its lifetime. That’s means it includes replacement parts, servicing, pilot training, etc. The F-35 program is quickly becoming the most successful fighter program in modern history.

@soraphim3769
@soraphim3769 2 жыл бұрын
This comment might be a bit late, but I'd like to point out that the F-35 is in fact way cheaper than what it's reported to be in the media. Hundreds have already been produced, hundreds have been exported and sold to other countries, yet there is still no major cost blockade preventing the program from moving forward even now in 2022. The only reason why it was portrayed as expensive was because of the poor coverage on project development and the lack of specification on what that 2 Trillion dollar price tag actually included. 2000+ aircraft sustained until the estimated 2070s, along with modular upgrades and maintenance costs, you're looking at a pretty fair expense.

The F4E had that added in the late 70's. The camera was in the left leading edge of the wing. It could track targets at long range and generate target tracking info. You could slave radar to TISEO or TISEO to radar. You could lock the radar on at 40 miles and see the target on the radar screen, not just a blip.

Gotta love the Lockheed Martin AN/AAQ-40 Electro Optical Targeting System ( EOTS ) Pod in the nose of the Lockheed Martin F-35A, F-35B, and F-35C Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters "Panthers" and F-35I Adirs! These along with the Lockheed Martin AN/AAQ-33 Sniper and AN/AAQ-33 Sniper-XR Advanced Targeting Pods and the older AN/AAQ-14 LANTIRN ( Low Altitude Targeting Infrared Night ) Pods and LTS ( F-14 Tomcat Specific ) are the best targeting pods in the work! Nothing like a Lockheed Martin Quality product! I think that it would be awesome to incorporate the Lockheed Martin AN/AAQ-40 EOTS into the Lockheed Martin F-22A Raptors as well! That would only make them more lethal!! Thanks again Lockheed Martin for your contribution to National Security of the United States of America and our awesome Allies such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Greece ( Hellenic Republic ), Italy, Japan, and others! 🇺🇸♠️🔱👽🔮🍺

It’s actually very affordable as far as aircraft go. 200 million per unit isn’t really that much to begin with, and the cost will only go down as the supply chain and manufacturing ramps up.

It’s nice that the F-35 has a built in targeting and spotting system that is apart of the fuselage unlike a targeting pod , you think Boeing would’ve introduced something like this into the F/A-18 Block 3
