I repair electronics for a living, basically if it runs on electricity and can fit on my workbench I'm happy to work on it. A power supply is an invaluable tool for diagnosing shorts. If you have access to a schematic and boardview it's even more useful, because you can apply a voltage to a specific rail and isolate shorts in a more refined fashion. Protip, isopropyl alcohol works way better than a FLIR. Dump alcohol on the area you suspect is overheating and then run power through it. The alcohol will basically flash boil on top of the hottest component. To get that kind of single-component accuracy out of a FLIR you'd need a very expensive one.
