So I actually did pause at 5:35 to think about it and, as a lay-woman, this is my assumption; I do not think there would be a magnetic field created because the electrons are not traveling through a stationary medium, or vessel. I assume the energy would be, mostly or exclusively, dissipated in the form of friction and heat as it traveled through the air once you threw it.

Oh and just a fun follow up, since you can make electromagnetic waves using a charged ruler, does that mean you could possibly produce visible light with just a charged ruler? I’m guessing you might have to move it at crazy speeds, but it would be a funny calculation to find out what you’d need to do with the ruler.

It's induction, baby! @ElectroBOOM 0:30 Current doesn't flow when there is a voltage diffrence, but when there is a difference in electric potential; a voltage. V = phi_1 - phi_0 At least this I what I've been taught
@6alecapristrudel
@6alecapristrudel 6 жыл бұрын
You can define either phi to be 0 Volts (phi_0 - phi_0 = 0 V, since it can't be different from itself); and since units are important and you cant just subtract different units and get a sensible answer then the other phi must also have units of Volts. There you go - a voltage difference. If I connect the negative terminals of a 1,5V battery (V_1 = phi_1 - phi_0) and a 9V one (V_2 = phi_2 - phi_0) I'll get a voltage difference between their positive terminals even by the proper definition you gave. You can probably guess what happens if I also connect the positive terminals together... The absolute electrical potential energy of a charge (phi) cannot be measured anyway. Theoreticians just love their abstractions.
@PersonaRandomNumbers
@PersonaRandomNumbers 6 жыл бұрын
Electric potential is voltage. A difference in electric potential is a voltage difference. It's just terminology. It should be noted that the comb moving isn't due to a voltage difference, though. It's due to throwing the comb :P

Help ElectroBOOM! My daughter asked me how the toaster knows when the toast is doen. I told her it was Voodoo but she say through my lie. I told her I would find out and emidiatly came here. So how does a toaster know when the toast is doen? Thanks!
@Antique1dude
@Antique1dude 6 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t, a toaster has timer that whenever you adjust the temperature control it adds or subtracts the running time of the toaster. I happen to have a 60 plus year old toaster that is basically the same concept of a modern toaster but it has only a mechanical timer. It actually makes better toast than any modern toaster that I’ve used, because on a modern toaster it’s either not even light brown or it burnt.
@tpespos
@tpespos 6 жыл бұрын
1stGenGamer I don’t know about modern day toasters but old ones used to be controlled by a stick of metal that had two different types of metal on it. Each flat on both sides like a sandwich ... ish bad analogy but as the inside of the toaster raised in eat one of the two metals expanded faster than the other causing the stick to bend one way and once it bent enough it would cause the toaster to pop the toast that’s also why old toasters needed a few seconds to cool down not long really and the nob you spun controlled the length of the metal rod because it was rapped around it changing how much it needed to bend to pop the toast
