Inductance is basically flux linkage/current it gives for a given current how much flux linkage is present By changing air gap more/less flux will be linked in the coil In a magnetic circuit for a given mmf a certian flux will be formed based on the reluctances By varying the air gap you change the reluctance of the circuit altering the flux linkage
