The maximum electron holding capacity of any shell is = 2*n2 where n= energy level, For M = 3 (third energy level) maximum electron holding capacity M=2* 3 the power 2 = 2*9= 18 this is only when are asked to calculate the maximu electron. But, in doing electron configuration we never put more than 8 elecron (18) on M shell. I think the one who commented on this might be from 11 grader or above.

For example if we are asked the electron configuration of calcium ( atomic number 20 ) Ca = 2, 8, 8, 1 (K,L, M ,N ) respectively. We do not write as Ca = 2, 8, 9)
