Our main limitation now is lack of time. That explains the poor quality of our videos.
Grinding of helical surfaces is one of the most complicated technological operations.
It requires at least two coordinated movements. Historically this procedure was implemented via devoted gearbox. Introduction of the microprocessors has simplified synchronization dramatically.
The machine tool we use is in fact a universal Jet tool grinder. This machine (with all its limitations) has been chosen because of its ability to orient the grinding spindle at different angles.
The CNC control system is based on the Atmega 2560 microprocessor (which is also widely used in Arduino Mega). All the electronic hardware was designed by our company from scratch. All movable axis are driven by the Nema 34 stepper motors.
The software has been developed from scratch using the C++ language. We didn’t use any library nor borrowed any fragment of imported software.
The distinguishing features of our technology.
The System provides two ways of setting the Controller for a specific helical surface.
1. An operator could simply manually set the lead by using the rotary pots
2. The alternative (and the easiest) method would be touching of two random spots of the actual helical surface. The Controller would automatically define all the parameters of the helical surface and no other actions are needed.
Setting the required number of teeth (grooves) is even easier - simply dial the pot and watch the displayed number. When it matches the desired number just push the SET button.
Setting the travel limits: move the table to a desired left or right limit and push the SET button. Turning ON the Cycle toggle switch would activate shuttling between those limits. You may adjust the rotary and linear speed instantly by rotating a dedicated pot.
There is also a toggle switch for activation of the automatic “feed-per-stroke”.

Although the control system doesn't include any encoder, the machine never skips pulses. Note that it doesn't require a stand alone computer or monitor. The operator just touches two random points on the helical surface and the system automatically calculates all the parameters. All the grinding process is fully automatic.

Great implementation of the Arduino for the big steppers. A very smart machine, based on a simple horizontal grinder!.

The classic hob sharpening machines were built in Germany. They are very expensive, so the conventional hob sharpening is a real nightmare.

great job how does the machine calculate the rotation speed and table feed?

The table's shuttle movement ("Master") could be adjusted via simple pot (rotary resistor). Rotation ("Slave") is a follower, its goal is to always keep ratio, meaning its RPM depends on the master's speed

If you unroll a helical line into a plain, it forms a simple triangle. The required ratio is defined by two adjacent side o this triangle.

The indexing head is widely available for around $300. A used tool grinder (like mine) would cost around $2000

No feedback devices, like encoders, are used. This is an open-loop "master-Slave" system. The table, the Master, does its shuttle movements with given liner speed. The indexer, the Slave, rotates with required ratio, which depends on helical angle.

I'm interested in what kind of grinding wheel that is. Does it need dressing regularly and can it throw off the accuracy?

Dressing of the grinding wheel has nothing to do with operation of the machine. It is a separate procedure
