I have one of these that I used once, then lost for a few years. It turned back up, so I thought I would try it. I put a new battery in it, then used it on my 1967 ford 352 engine. It reads 190rpm. Which is so slow I don't think the truck would even run at that speed. I checked it with my old Wards diagnostic meter from the 1970s. Sure enough, that new meter is so far off as to be unusable. I don't see what I could be doing wrong, so I assume it's trash. Thanks for the video though. I didn't find the instructions with the meter, so I ended up here.

Thanks for recommendation. Looking for a tach so I don't burn my engines out when adjusting carb. Less expensive than a Stihl tach!

It's interesting it read the mower correctly. The mowers I've worked with spark every revolution like a 2 stroke not every other revolution like a proper 4 stroke. I would have expected the reading to be double the actual value based on your settings.

Two cycle and four cycle ignition systems operate the same way it fires every revolution

I've had mine now about 2 years, only issues I have is 1: it doesn't have a recall to see what high and low's are 2: the battery seems to go dead rather quick when in storage, my fix is to just disconnect the battery. It's read every rpm range that I've put it too, up to 14'500rpm on my Husqvarna Cookie Cutter with no problems. A decent tach for the money.

I followed the link, price isn’t bad, A little less than the Tiny Tach, which only lasts for 4 or 5 years till the battery dies. It’s potted in the part, and not replaceable. Are you still liking it? If so, I’m gonna get one. Thanks, Jim

Hello, do you still recommend this tachometer? Thank you!
@jamesdoyle92203 жыл бұрын
Mine must be an earlier model. When set to 4 stroke mode it gives the wrong reading on most small engines because they spark on both compression and exhaust strokes. I don’t understand how this unit can tell if the engine is a “wasted spark “ system or not.

I bought an identical looking tachometer in the UK to set my lawn mower RPM (Briggs and Stratton 450) I set it to 4 STR/1 CYL but it was reading double what it should and I can't figure out why, any ideas? It sounded right for 3000 RPM, but I had to set the tach to 6000 to make it sound right. Thanks for the video!
@killer26004 жыл бұрын
The 4 stroke 1 cylinder setting counts 2 rpm/revolutions per spark. Typical single cylinder small engines as found on lawn mowers spark every revolution (like a 2 stroke). So your reading twice as many rpms because the mismatch in how the 4 stroke 1 cylinder setting counts and how frequently your mower sparks. The 2 stroke 1 cylinder or 4 stroke 2 cylinder settings should give you the correct rpm reading.
@nickmclaren38984 жыл бұрын
@@killer2600 Thanks. I thought that must be the case after reading a bit more about it or mine had been calibrated differently for some reason. So why does yours read correctly on the 4str/1cyl setting when attached to your lawnmower? Surely lawnmower engines aren't different in the U.S.? or is it as you said, that different engines spark more times than others? and where do you find out how often your lawnmower sparks? Thanks again.
@killer26004 жыл бұрын
@@nickmclaren3898 I'm not the video creator but I asked the same question about the lawn mower in another comment. Right now my theory is the tach in the video is defective. Less obvious but the same issue may be going on with the car demo. Unless it's picking up all 6 spark plug pulses, the reading should be incorrect. So I'm puzzle like you, but on a positive note your tach appears to be working correctly.
@nickmclaren38984 жыл бұрын
Killer2600 Thanks very much for your reply, it’s good to hear my tach is okay.
@larryfine44982 жыл бұрын
Because some of the small engines fire off the crankshaft, not the camshaft, they fire on the compression and exhaust stroke, doubling the RPMs you're reading.

How do you adjust the power or get more RPM on a Toro SmartStow mower. I bought one 2yrs ago and sold it recently. It worked perfectly fine. The reason I sold it was because I was thinking of getting a battery powered mower. After I realized that battery powered mowers don’t give as good of lift on the grass I was upset I already sold my Toro SmartStow. So I had to buy a new one. I got the same model, so nothing was different at all. When I got it home and out of the box, I started it up and quickly could tell the mower sounded lower in power. I took it back and got another one thinking maybe something was wrong with previous one. When I got the second one home it sounded the same as the previous one. Not sure what Toto did but they obviously lowered the RPMs. I would like to get a little more power back in the mower. Are you able to help me with this? I have no understanding of all these moving parts. I did manage to take the cover off of it and move this flat disc or turn it and heard the mower get louder. So I am a handy person. Just not sure about all these moving parts and exactly what to do. Please let me know if there is a way we can talk. I am getting this Tachometer by the way. Thanks for sharing this item. Looked all over for one. Thanks
@killer26004 жыл бұрын
Gotta say if two different samples of identical things behave identically then they probably are working as intended. Your old mower was probably out of spec or just worn leading to sounding different than a brand new model.
@bounjamin2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't recommend increasing the RPMs on this without knowing the specifications. Probably good to use a tachometer too.

Just wondering.....since making this review how has the tachometer held up? Do you have any pro’s, and cons you can share? As usual an excellent video. I always enjoy your channel.

The only con I can see on this Tach is the flashlight...I would never use that unless I'm working in the black of night I guess. Otherwise nice Tach

Questionable accuracy for me. Measuring a 1-cylinder, 4-stroke mower I get anywhere from 3200 - 4000 rpm using the lead.
@3480cableguy2 жыл бұрын
Setting should be 2:1 on a single cylinder four stroke mower. Not 4:1
@WV5914 жыл бұрын
3200 is way too much for older mowers. 2900-3000 is safer.
