i'm an electronic component distributor, but i'm new is this industry, so this episode topic meaningful for me. The most seen issues for me when talk with customers is that they always think distributors' price are expensive. So if they directly buy from manufacturers the price will cheaper right? just a question of information gap. By the way, if all customers directly buy from manufacturers, will the delivery speed lower? Dear author here can point the advantages of distributors in more plain way?

Most of the mainstream component manufacturers won't sell direct - it takes too mcc manpower and the costs are large. It's better to sell via distribution for them as the distributor will make up the larger orders with a variety of components from a variety of manufacturers.

I've found that buying directly from Texas Instruments is almost always much cheaper than buying from a distributor, even when buying just one part. And when you look at their price for 1000 units it is usually a fraction of the price of buying 1000 (or even 10,000) from a distributor - e.g., a third of the price. (And I'm talking about pre-covid.) Is there a reason why someone would buy from a distributor rather than from TI directly? The distributors also usually have much higher postage and packaging costs. The only real advantage I see if if someone is buying low quantities from several vendors - in which case they only have to pay shipping once. Maybe TI give much better deals when buying directly (or much worse deals to distributors) than other manufacturers?

Often manufacturers like to use one source for as much as possible. It simplifies the supply chain and as a result saves overall costs. Also a lot of component manufacturers do not supply direct, so TI are obviously an exception.

TI is an exception due to the fact that they have a well-oiled strong distribution network of their own. However, that's not true for other device manufacturers, whether big or small. Distribution is not a problem that manufacturers can't solve, it is just that distributors are better placed and equipped to take care of that.

Customers take items on longer credit. A distributor bears the burden of credit by infusing his capital in rotation. Manufactuter will demand money earlier from customer during direct sale, sometimes pay first and take stocks later.

Why has Digi-key not supply my order for the last 6months. Why do they extend the date of a back order to 2022?
@ElectronicsNotes3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I cannot give a definitive answer as we are not connected with Digi-Key - we only interviewed one of their executives. However I do know that supply of electronic components and in particular semiconductor devices and ICs is very problematic at the moment. Components are in very short supply. I can only suggest that you contact them directly to find out more about your particular order. In the mean time, I found this article very interesting and it may give you an explanation of what is happening, at least for ICs. www.rs-online.com/designspark/a-shortage-of-chips
