One benefit of carrying an oversized solar panel is the ability to get useful charging current in sub-optimal lighting conditions. When you are carrying your panel at a poor angle or when there is broken cloud or fine haze in the sky.

You may be able to use the aa powerbank to store your cells and reduce bulk a little. I cut pieces of those thick rubber bands that come on broccoli to keep batteries from engaging the contacts when stuff is not in use. Also helps cut the rattle in battery cases

Nice slimmed down electronics kit. One of the big things is that you've pretty much standardized your batteries though you may want to get those last couple items to AA also. You're probably good with the GoalZero charger, but you might consider something that charges more than just AA. There are a few out there (Fenix, Nitecore, Xtar) that charge AAA up to 18650/21700 both lithium and NiMh batteries and charge from USB. Some can also be used as a battery bank to discharge the same batteries like the GZ, though I don't use that feature. I've done pretty much the same, though I keep a bit more so i can support equipment i may come across or others. I've currently standardized on USB-c cables with adapters for all the legacy connections including the Garmin. You know your needs better but I generally advise keeping a 12v and AC adapter with my kit. Stop at a restaurant and borrow an outlet. Hitch a ride and power up while you can. Doesn't take up much room or weight but can be helpful if not completely off the grid since they are faster charging methods.

Found your channel today...Very nice content overall with a good "down-to-earth" personal review of what you use and why...I'm more a traditionalist, which means if I can't make it, I don't have it in the bush...I've never owned or carried a cell phone in my life other than those of the Military or from clients that wished me to have one for a given project...I know "tech" and understand it fully, I just choose not to rely on it as much as most seem to these days...NEVERTHELESS...if I was to "gadget up" this breakdown and list were excellent and most of it was on my "recommended list" to those clients that are more tech-savvy and dependant...WELL DONE!!!... I'm keeping this video for future client reference...Thanks so much!!!

Love your videos brother & it’s not so much the gear (which evolves every ten seconds nowadays anyhow) it’s your method of processing why you choose what you do. In light of recent events I wonder if the last man standing will be wearing a $7 hydration bladder from the Army Navy store and carrying a Mosin that he cut down with a tubing cutter? There’s a vibration on the tracks, it seems.

Include a Baofeng UVr and a small windup weather radio for comms and as an alternative charging source to solar. Also I believe goal zero has a AAA adaptor for the charger.

I have the same GZ charger. Rex is correct about the AAA adapter, I have one for my charger. The OG chargers had a problem over heating and smelled of burnt plastic. GZ sent me a "Plus" version w/o any hassle.

I bet you knew I'd comment on this one for sure lol, my "emp" bags are much tougher than those and better designed imo. However someone 😉 needs to test and evaluate that statement lol. The main thing is you have protection though, and no doubt electronics would be priceless in that situation.

Just wondering, have you ever looked at the Streamlight ProTac 90, or the Streamlight Sidewinder Compact II? I'd love to hear your thoughts on them. The reason why I ask is that they both have the same battery system as the ProTac 1L-1AA. The ProTac 90 is basically the same flashlight, but with an angled head so it can be used as a headlamp. The Sidewinder Compact II is a mil-spec light that can be used as a headlamp, but can also be attached to a helmet, etc., and it has white, blue, red, and IR modes. Is there a reason why you're not using one of these, and instead picked that Black Diamond headlamp? Thanks.
@PreparedAirman
@PreparedAirman Жыл бұрын
I own a couple sidewinders and like the features just not the lack of lumes at 47 is a bummer. As for the Streamlight protac 90 I'm not a fan of 90 degree heads of flashlights. It doesn't work very well in my pocket. In my experience it will have a better chance of ND which is bad. I would say they are bad options for other users. They just don't fit my needs.

I’m a bit of a newbie so I hope I don’t embarrass myself by asking this question, but here goes: if the watch is super informative, is the only thing you need the Garmin InReach Mini 2 for communication?
@PreparedAirman
@PreparedAirman Жыл бұрын
The Garmin Inreach can actually connect to your phone or it can be used alone too. You actually don't even need the watch. It just slightly helps out on how you use it.

Awesome video my friend. I have an off the wall question. Do you catch any slack for wearing your Garmin watch in sensitive areas? If you do, do you have a back up watch? I saw something about smart watches being forbidden in sensitive areas. Dan
@PreparedAirman
@PreparedAirman 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I do have issues with wearing it sometimes. In today's military they are very popular so when ever we have a sensitive briefing we are told to remove ans store them in poper locations before hand. As for during certain operations I set mine to stealth mode which eliminates all incoming or out going signals or I place it in a Faraday cage.
@davidhawkins847
@davidhawkins847 Жыл бұрын
Correct. Because they support BT, they are one of the many electronics not allowed into certain locations. Between watch, headphones, phone, and checking my pockets for flash drives, it's like going through airport security.

I've not an idea how you found a setup that functions. I have countless solar devices, battery banks, battery chargers, and zero of them are compatible with one another, and do not properly hook up to any device I own. Will give your rig a go as a last resort and hopefully something comes of it at least, thanks.

Trial and error. You will still experience some parasitic drain/loss transferring electricity from one source to another but it still works well.
