@@techymomof6873 it's a big challenge, I sale brand new electronics in Malawi. Imagine now that each time I have a New HP I have to carefully open it and slightly losen the hinges something I don't enjoy doing given a new computer, but still do just to prolong the hinges life span, especially when I am selling to university students I give them 4years warranty so it's a must to have the hinges issue prevented for me. I have also noted that lately even other brands like Lenovo, (Not ThinkPad) but the basic cheaper Lenovo it's a similar issue partly to do with the cheap plastic casings which can't withstand pressure.

Another tip is to put the metallic inserts on the tip of a hot soldering iron and drop them slowly on the plastic casing. I've never heard of using baking soda with super glue. Very interesting! What I usually do is drill a hole in the bottom case, where each brass nut is broken loose, and run a small long bolt through the bottom. I put the original brass nut on first, tighten it down a bit, then the hinge on top of that, and another nut on top of the hinge.

Awesome Video , another tip, loosen the the hinges slightly . In my experience hinges are often too tight, which could be part of the issue in the first instance . About half a turn with a nut spinner ( M5/M5.5/M6 too hard with plyers ) each end of the hinges . Also Silicone grease or 3 in 1 oil helps

Indeed too tight! I'm fixing a laptop I had when I was younger and I remember the screw being so tight I couldn't unscrew it to replace the screen so I think I just tore the arm of the hinge off and then tore off the broke screen (god forbid I told my parents either)because I was like "better to be able to use it than close it" like no that's so impractical
@chrisgraham29042 жыл бұрын
Yes, the hinge tension adjustment nut seems to automatically tighten with use as the screen in lifted and closed. Loosen the adjustment nut until the hinge moves smoothly, but will still support the screen in the open position. A drop of Locktite thread locking solution on the adjusted nut will prevent the nut from automatically tightening in the future. Very careful application of a lubricant will aid the hinge's movement and it can be applied to any areas that you don't want to be adhered by the crazy glue or epoxy that you use for the hinge attachment.

I have tried cyanoacrylate to re-set hinge anchor points. But actually gorilla weld or jb weld has worked best, if you put the mix in a 20ml oral dispensing syringe after mixing, you can use micro-control to build up your anchor points after you have placed them. I usually use a mobile-fixable desk-mounted lighted magnifying glass and tweezers as well to get the fit and finish right. The one thing I noticed that you didn't do, was remove the circuit board away from the affected area and reinstall them later. I always remove the circuit boards so that in case I make a mistake, they won't be damaged or accidently glued in place in case another tech needs to work on it in the future for some other issue.

One of my heavier media laptops has metal parts broken break apart after years of use, so no epoxy or superglue can help - there I just DRILLED TROUGH the laptop body, and put a steel plate on the other side. Looks ugly but it works. Because design allows for it to work. In newer slimmer laptops the plate and end of screws would cut into screen when fully closed.

Posting a second comment for those who want to try this and have no other options. My attempt is finding to be more difficult considering I do not have ANY plastic pieces able to hold the little gold thread pieces. At first I tried directly just gluing the pieces to the plastic. Let that sit for an hour or so, but when testing out to see if the screws at least stayed in, they came right off. A second attempt was made with the baking soda method, thinking it was going to dry quicker and harder. Same result. Both the gold thread and the screw came right off after I let that sit about another hour. It is a messy process to try and clean this up. Its going to take time now to make sure to get all the glue and baking soda off the plastic of the laptop for a flush fit, but I will try again and let it set and CURE for even longer (24 hours recommended) HONEST OPINION (so far): if there is no plastic pieces to set the threads in, attempt at your own risk. It seems more of a hassle to try and clean it up if you do not get it right the first time. Be very thorough and make sure the gold threads are aligned properly as well as you let it dry/cure FULLY if you do either method for 24 hours!!! I am going to clean it up and try it again.. hoping it will bond properly 🙏

@@ElectronicsComputers all I had was Gorilla Glue. I am redoing it and put a little bit on the gold threads to hold them in place until they're cured. Then I am going to do the baking soda method over them to keep them more sturdy and let it cure for a full 24 hours. Hopefully it works lol

You can add a little WD40 or some oil to slightly lubricate the hinges but only if they are really tight.

Great video, sad that hadn't thought about this one myself, but I have fixed some other things with this method and I must say that things that need some elasticity or have high/frequent stress are cracking this composite quite fast, like in a month or two. But overall that is so stupid that those high stress areas are so often made of cheap plastic that lasts just enough to get you through warranty period of the device. Like even my MSI laptop I bought 3 years ago for like 1900 euros started falling apart half a year ago, so I had to buy a new front panel for another 120 euros. Thats considering the fact that I was closing the laptop only once a week and it was mostly stationary device.
@ElectronicsComputers Жыл бұрын
Sometimes, I think that laptop manufacturers deliberately make those areas weak. Lenovo, HP, and Asus have the weakest hinge mount area.
@_deathcry Жыл бұрын
@@ElectronicsComputers Probably, and like they are certainly able to increase the durability of the mount area by making it bigger and having more than 3 screws, so that the applied stress would be distributed more and thus chassis last significantly longer, but those big companies probably don't need long lasting product, neither they care about E-Waste, because who would buy new laptops then...
@Tuatara1989 Жыл бұрын
Yes it's baffling. If I'd ever buy a laptop I'd look for some videos to see what the hinge mounting is like. Seen this happen on too many of them already.,

J.B weld also works great!
@ElectronicsComputers7 ай бұрын
Yes, J.B. Weld is great stuff, but it's not perfect for that particular application. Cyanoacrylate has low viscosity, which allows it to get inside tiny cracks between plastic parts and the brass insert. On the other hand, J.B. Weld will only create a strong bond on the surface, leaving the inside structure compromised and likely to fail again in the future. For the past 15 years, we've had ZERO returns during the warranty period using cyanoacrylate and adhesive filler.
