Great video but I think you need to clarify that if one capacitor goes short it will also show all the other capacitors that are connected in parallel with it and therefore does not mean the IC is short, I am aware you know this but I think you need to clarify it for completeness

The only positive way is to obtain the circuit drawing Andrew desolder and isolate one leg of the other capacitors that are connected in parallel one at a time and re-test until shorted capacitor becomes evident unless other know different

Good to know, so first you find the group of capacitors that show a short, and then isolate one by one until you find which one is short it. In the case that none of them is short it, we can easy test if the IC is short it (most probably is short it) Thanks for your replied

great video... i'm trying to teach myself electronics so i can actually understand what i'm doing... have always just followed directions without much understanding. but the pile of 'stuff that doesn't work' started to get too big to ignore'. i have a dog collar that is supposed to track where the dog is and show it on a little handheld screen. it appears where the battery connected, the wires shorted and totally crunched... well... SOMETHING. it literally was a little black thing that fell to pieces so i have no idea what it was. assuming it was a smd capacitor... is there a trick to know WHAT it was? there is a C and a number beside it, so has to be a capacitor, logically. but what size? i can assume based on the length, it is the same as others on the board?
