I got the cheapest clip for my BIOS programmer from Aliexpress, one that hangs onto the chip by itself, although it's a little finnicky to get on right. But when it's on, you don't have to hold it by hand at least.

Hello Sorin, different fact, I cleaned two ornamental two trees of resin "tears" (probably wounds of the tree), from those that make many cones like some larger cloves, and used them for desoldering. It works well, I have to do more tests, it also smells very nice.

Thanks for sharing. You mean the actual chip itself is crappy? So it is not the solder? Or does bad thermal make it come off or come lose internally? I used to have a contact that reballed old Apple G3 GPUs. If Apple did it they failed after a year, but when he did it it lasted for years. He had an industrial sort of oven with a profile he figured out. Thermal pad may work, newer models of the Precision I have, have a cooling pad and copper on it. Awesome find, love to know how you apply cooling and how long it lasts! And still hoping for you to answer to that email from Sweden ;).

I had a faulty chipset, the first symptom was error 43 on gpu. Local repair did not diagnose it properly, I ordered gpu replacement (old laptop), it did not change anything. Later I discovered chipset gets extemely hot, but still it worked, until one day it blew up with a smoke. The cause was my attempt to replace thermal paste without unplugging battery, so suspecting gpu issue made sense at first.

You applied way, way too much thermal paste on the cpu which i saw at the start of the video - this can also negatively affect thermal performance. If you cant eyeball how much is needed, use a spatula to spread the paste evenly and add a tiny dab of paste in the middle - this will ensure perfect coverage with no gaps

Intel Chipset has no this issiue like old gpus. Same effect you willget if you push the chip. You have to reball the chipset the problem is cracked solderbals between chipset and mainboard.
I do not understand. I can understand that by heating the contacts they melt and repair them, but that the chip itself is repaired by heating it is not clear to me

There are multiple solder points under the chipset so Sorin has warmed them up to melt the solder and remake the contacts,
@gower197310 ай бұрын
Its not a solder ball issue the issue is inside the chip itself, there is a microscopic crack in a trace somewhere heating it causes thermal expansion and the crack closes so it starts working again. But the issue will come back as the board constantly heats and cools the break in the chip will happen again
@ElMariachi133710 ай бұрын
@@Arachnoid_of_the_underverse no, this was not about the solder being bad, the chipset is broken inside due to it's body expanding/shrinking because of temp differences between the on/off laptop. See it as a wire breakage, sometimes when you hold the wire in a certain angle the machine still works. By heating the chipset Sorin got lucky it got back into a working position. He used the thermal pad to reduce the limits of the expanding/shrinking trying to make it a more average endurance for the chipset and hoping it will keep working. But since there will still be a temprature difference everytime the laptop is on and off, the chipset will die in the end regardless ...

I do not understand why Dell moved from having the chipset cooled by the heatsink, as on some older Precisions ie. m6600 or m4800, to simply having them exposed with no cooling mechanism other than ambient air such as the one shown in the video🙅♀
@obvious777710 ай бұрын
I've also noticed that some Dell Precision models run hotter thus causing heat related issues sooner, so I drill additional holes in the bottom cover to assist in cooling.
@widyahong10 ай бұрын
This chipset doesnt need that for operating, its just several watt, operating temp only around 60 deg c.

The chipset is healthy, but it needs reballing. You only did reflow and not even a good one. That was a perfect moment for your rosin to shine but you missed it. You always say that you can solder chipsets but cant find a healthy one. Well... what more do you want?
@g4z-kb7ct10 ай бұрын
No he didn't do reflow. He simply heated the chip to prove a point, the chip is internally faulty. This is a known thing for at least 15 years with large bga chips that run hot. This is why people should add heatsinks or heatpads to all things including tv video board bga chips otherwise they will eventually fail from getting too hot. They are designed that way and manufacturers purposely do not put heatpad there so it will fail because manufacturers do not like things to last 20-30 years.
@renter8410 ай бұрын
@@g4z-kb7ct Things don't just repair by themselves when heated - only solder does that. He "repaired" the solder joints only temporary. I've done that in the past too but with temporal effect. And adding thermopads and pressure on the chip doesnt work. May add few hours/days worktime maybe...
@dhankthapamagar338910 ай бұрын

@@renter84 In my comment I did not say it 'repairs' it. Watch the video about why fat PS3 fails and can't be fixed and you will see it is a known issue where the connections inside bga chips fail. It is known and well documented.
