Sorin, if you remember, you had 37 ohms on one side of the capacitor. That cleared when you popped the capacitor off. I believe that 37 ohms may have been loading the 19v bus, much like when you installed the properly calibrated fuse. Once you cleared the load/short, you had 19v on the screen connector.

i believe this is the case but the short may have not been pulling enough current to completely stop the motherboard from booting

That's right the blown capacitor makes it as a resistance with a low ohms something like a half or hidden short

Happy birthday Sorin. I know a bit later, but better later then never. Regarding the fault, I had something similar on the bench. The screen backlight came back after I disconnected the screen from the board and connected it back some minutes later. The black magic of electronic components.

Hello, Sorin. I’m sorry to say but You didn’t fix the board, You just eliminated the short that was on the 19V power rail. The component that was blown was not a capacitor, it was a coil (I checked that on a perfect LA-C502P board image). The coil number in the board schematics is “LA10” (sometimes, you call those coils as “carbon resistors”, but they are small coils, and you can see the coil number written near the component on the board). There’s still a short in the board after the coil but you isolated the shortened circuit by removing the coil (the blown component) and liberating the 19V to go to the screen conector again. Sorry for my poor English but I think you could understand me. Cheers from Brazil!

Well explained! would be nice to know if customer will get back and say what device in this laptop has stopped working. That blown coil was providing power to something, so there must be a faulty device now, perhaps a sound chip , etc. Schematics is really needed here, to find out exactly.

I saw 2 of these. The back-light buttons on keyboard are "reversing" randomly.... making screen completely black at 100% and completely lighted at 0% ... removing battery everything come correct.... but maybe after some days the backlight controls becomes again reversed... check on the web ... on the HP forum there are some users talking about this.

I replace laptop screens often. The trick is to remove the bezel with flat plastic spatula. Or something like gitar plectrum. Mostly the bottom side is attached with some glue. Needs to be cut with a fine metal spatula.

Most probably you have a ground layer under the exploded component. When you soldered the wire you created a short between the main power rail to the ground layer below it.

Sometimes when you somehow fix something, there IS a issue, just enough to bump it and be thankful its working again is all you can hope sometimes. You can test it for a hour moving and bumping and if all good, Perhaps clean all connectors and check alignment ect and wires. Once had a early ipad with a LCD that only came on now and then, so unglued the touch and just that alone without anything else disturbed something and i couldnt get it to go off again!! I then cleaned all the connectors and checked all and plugged in and out in case of corrosion but 100%. Must have been very very small connector issue just enough to kill the screen and even tapping it before opening make no diff which is why i had to open her.

HP stands for "horrible products". Even their most expensive laptops made about 8 years ago used dangerous power inputs but their real masterstroke was to use capacitors in line, usually 4 when 2 good quality ones would suffice. HP's were cheap ones and often popped and this could blow carbon [conductive] fragments to other places. After thorough cleaning and using re-set, usually by removing the BIOS battery for a couple of hours, normality could be restored. That is to say HP's shoddy version of 'normality'. Part of my work was to recommend devices to government acquisition departments here in the UK and as the faults were so common the result was very few HP laptops being seen in British schools. Strangely, far older HP laptops could be upgraded using SSDs new RAM and occasional CPUs to work to modern speeds and acceptable efficiency.

could the exploded capacitor have broken the ground track and by applying the soldering iron , you rejoined the ground track? (would explain the no ground situation to then recovered ground situation?)

First : - What Operating System do you have installed on the USB? And what software did you use to make it bootable? - Have you made any BIOS changes on the Toshiba Laptop? Check if that works : 1. Once in BIOS, select Security and make sure Secure Boot is disabled. 2. Next, select the Advanced tab -> System Configuration -> make sure boot mode is set to CSM Boot. 3. Press F10 and Save & Exit. 4. Press F12 when you see the Toshiba logo and you should be able to boot into your USB drive. If you still don't see your USB key, it may be that you made your USB bootable drive the wrong way or there's something else. If you try to install Windows 11, you'll need Secure boot and TPM 2.0 enabled in your BIOS.
