Basically it's the same for "all" modern laptops (Acer, Asus, Toshiba, HP...) other than MacBooks. You have 19 V main rail and then power management chip is managing all smaller supplies and protecting them from shorts with smaller variations (basically shouldn't let you start the machine if there's a short on any rails). Macs are different with a few versions of motherboard layouts so you have to look into them separatedly.

I like watching you videos. I also repair laptops mostly gaming like ROG, Alienware ect. Just fixed a Qosmio Z70-b which had a short on the GPU voltage rail. Simple fix'd by removing the inductor on that rail and forcing the laptop to use the intel 4600 built into the CPU. Well done on some of your great bypass video. Always good to see someone who can also do it without the schematics.

Really enjoyed this video, Sorin. Great idea to take a good laptop and use it to simulate issues and then fix them. Did you solve the electrical issue with your GoPro? You have a lot of patience! Guessing since your multimeter and the GoPro are both connected to the computer for vid-capture, when there's a spark, like you said, it freezes. It must be very well-built to withstand so many shocks internally. Anyways, I'll find out in your later videos if you solved it. : )

It's different on a desktop computer, the power supplies are controlled by the ATX power supply, which turns them on when you short the PS_ON pin on the connector (this is what the power button on a desktop does).

31:40 shorted 3,3v bios chip so to diagnose short you would find 3,3v power rail and put 3,3 from the power supply. in this example would bios chip get hot? and how you would identify bios chip is faulty and its needs to be replaced?
@electronicsrepairschool
@electronicsrepairschool 6 жыл бұрын
never found a faulty bios chip :)
@bonbonpony
@bonbonpony 6 жыл бұрын
A logic probe or some good oscilloscope would probably show that, if you know what signals should be there, and if you can afford such tools (I can't). The BIOS chip is pretty much just an EEPROM with serial interface, like SPI or something alike, so it should send some zeros and ones through the data lines to the "power up chip" (which is actually a general-purpose I/O port, with a serial-to-parallel interface) when it's working properly. But I don't know how to check it with primitive tools. As for shorting the BIOS in the video, it was shorted _around_ the BIOS, so it's like it was never connected in the first place, because the current would be through the jumper wire instead of through the ROM chip. So if anything would get hot, it's the jumper wire. Unless you were talking about the actual situation in which the BIOS chip got shorted somewhere inside? That would be quite rare, because the BIOS is not really driving much current in a normal situation, so it cannot get too hot etc. And if it were damaged by some static, it would rather be insulating than shorting. More likely, the power rails can get short, through some capacitor or resistor or some other part that's under constant load during the normal operation.

Hi Sorin. If you have any good trick to show us how to find an overloading component not shorted. which mean no short, all voltage are present but the 19.5 drop to 18.5. the laptop dead. I had sony vio shorted capacitor found on the 19v and removed. the laptop worked 1 hour and died. is any trick nothing get hot. thanks
@thetiredtechie2704
@thetiredtechie2704 6 жыл бұрын
Now when it's dead, do you still have ~19V power rail? If yes, follow it to power management chip checking voltage along the way and then from the chip to other supplies. Is 3.3 V (check on BIOS chip) and 5 V (check on USB) present? If some of them is gone look into that power supply. If something is overloading and not on short, it should get warm/hot too for disipating more power.

Hi, Have a ASUS A3A Laptop motherboard board and the problem is it wont always power up BUT the power switch always lights so i figuring a start up capacitor as it works perfectly when going , just the start up. Also if you reset the computer it will stall when it restarts so i figure the big gulp of power then as well indicate a cap for initial start. ts not the PS as i done all that as i repair electronics just never a laptop board as its all so tiny and almost unrepearable. and tried all usual drain tricks with power button and as laptop runs when going , it not the PS .. So am i looking around the power input for these caps and will they be big or small surface mount types ? Thanks for any help

I am having a wierd problem. When i plug the charger everything seems fine and power led lights up and 19v coming as well. But if I pressed the power button, it lights few leds including hard drives and immediately shuts down. After that, laptops completely dead with no power led. Laptop does turns on unless I unplug and replug the power connector. In completely dead state, I checked 19v on power socket and few mosfet nearby 19v is coming. Power button voltage is not coming. And few mosfet gate is receiving 19v. Most capacitors nearby chipset is short to ground. Can you simulate this one? I think injecting voltage and feeling the heat is the proper solution here.
